Why Grimes' New Tattoos Are Causing Such A Stir
Hitmaking Grimes, real name Claire Elise Boucher, has always known how to make people turn heads with her futuristic look, but now she's taking it to a whole new level. The Canadian artist, who famously shares son X Æ A-Xii with billionaire space enthusiast Elon Musk, added some new art to her aesthetic, placing some alien-inspired ink across her entire back.
"Full back in white ink by @tweakt w sum help from the alien computer brain of @nusi_quero," she wrote via Instagram on April 11, 2021, showing off the statement piece. "Don't have a good [picture] [because] it hurts too much and I need to sleep haha, and it'll be red for a few [weeks], but [it's going] be beautiful alien scars," she added, explaining the meaning behind the swirling design. "Hope everyone's having a good day," she concluded.
Her new tattoo will definitely give the appearance of "scars" since white ink is known to quickly fade, however it causes a raised effect underneath the skin, per Daily Mail. While we may be used to Grimes' unorthodox ways, considering the interesting name she gave her baby, her new ink is causing a stir for a whole different reason aside her and her partner's plans to take to the stars in the near future. People think Grimes' 'alien scars' look like something else
Grimes' new alien-inspired ink comes shortly after both she and boyfriend Elon Musk discussed their desires to make their way to Mars. Back in December 2020, the billionaire and SpaceX CEO said he is "highly confident" his company will land on the Red Planet by 2026, he said on an award show webcast from Berlin, Germany, per CNBC, which would be seven years before NASA's plans to do so.
As for Grimes, she echoed her partner's interest to go to Mars, taking to Instagram on March 2021, writing, "Ready to die with the red dirt of Mars beneath my feet Starbase Tx," as she posed outside of Musk's Starbase facility in Texas.
While her new tattoo definitely has a lot of meaning for both her and her partner, some people think her "alien scar" design resembles something else. "Why'd you look like you got whipped," one person commented on her Instagram reveal. "... this makes me a little uncomfortable ... looks like the back of a slave ...," another echoed. Although some saw a racial undertone in the design, others celebrated the singer for continuing to prove she's one of a kind, with someone else writing, "she is such a freak I love her for it." We can't wait to see what her art looks like when it's all healed!
