Piers Morgan Reacts To Prince Philip's Death
Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, died on April 9, 2021. He was 99 years old at the time of his death. In February 2021, he was hospitalized as a "precautionary measure." Per CNN, he was "treated for an infection and underwent heart surgery, before being discharged in mid-March [2021]." Queen Elizabeth, his wife of 73 years, is in mourning along with the rest of the royal family.
Tributes are pouring in following his death, and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson reflected on Philip's contributions during his reign. "Prince Philip earned the affection of generations here in the United Kingdom, across the Commonwealth and around the world," he said in a press conference (via Reuters). "Like the expert carriage driver that he was he helped to steer the royal family and the monarchy so that it remains an institution indisputably vital to the balance and happiness of our national life."
He continued, "We remember the Duke for all of this and above all for his steadfast support for Her Majesty the Queen. Not just as her consort, by her side every day of her reign, but as her husband, her 'strength and stay,' of more than 70 years. And it is to Her Majesty, and her family, that our nation's thoughts must turn today."
Media personality Piers Morgan also shared his thoughts on Philip's death. Keep reading to find out what he said.
Piers Morgan has something to say about Prince Philip's death
After news broke about Prince Philip's death, Piers Morgan took to Twitter, writing, "RIP Prince Philip, 99. A truly great Briton who dedicated his life to selfless public duty & was an absolute rock of devoted support to Her Majesty, The Queen, as the longest-serving royal consort to any British sovereign. A very sad day for our country. Thank you, Sir."
While the British broadcaster has been quite critical of Meghan Markle, he's seemingly been a staunch supporter of the royal family as a whole. In fact, he even exited his job at Good Morning Britain in March 2021 after he "dismissed" Meghan's statements following her and Prince Harry's bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, per The Independent.
In April 2021, Morgan told Extra's Billy Bush that he'd received "some messages communicated to [him]" from "members of the royal family" after defending them following Meghan and Harry's interview. While he reportedly could not go into great detail, he said, "Well, I'm not going to go into who it was, but what I can say is gratitude for someone who was standing up for me."
