Prince Philip died at the age of 99 on April, 9, 2021. The news comes after Queen Elizabeth's longtime spouse was admitted to the hospital for a pre-existing heart condition in February 2021. While, as of this writing the queen, Prince Charles, Prince William, and Kate Middleton have yet to make a public statement following Philip's death, the royals have already taken to honoring him on social media.
A skim of the @RoyalFamily, @KensingtonRoyal, and @ClarenceHouse Twitter accounts reveals that each features the same black-and-white background image of the late Duke of Edinburgh. "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh," reads a statement released by the royal family. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss."
Similarly, the official website takes users to a holding page with the same photo of Philip and the words, "The Duke of Edinburgh 1921 – 2021." While the family grieves the passing of a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, celebrities and world leaders have taken to social media to share their sadness.

Leaders and celebrities pay tribute to Prince Philip
Moments after Prince Philip's death was announced, Twitter was flooded with posts commemorating his life and legacy. British journalist Piers Morgan led the parade of well-wishers, writing, "RIP Prince Philip, 99. A truly great Briton who dedicated his life to selfless public duty & was an absolute rock of devoted support to Her Majesty, The Queen, as the longest-serving royal consort to any British sovereign. A very sad day for our country. Thank you, Sir."
Star Trek actor George Takei offered up his condolences, tweeting, "My heartfelt condolences to the royal family in this time of grief, and especially to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who has spent a lifetime by her Prince Phillip." British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was equally saddened by the news. "Our thoughts are with Her Majesty and her family, who have lost not just a much-loved and highly respected public figure, but a devoted husband and a proud and loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather," he tweeted, calling the country "a kingdom united both in grief and gratitude."
Many also paid tribute to Philip's devotion to the queen. Labour party leader Keir Starmer tweeted that Philip and Elizabeth's enduring partnership was inspirational to countless people. "Their marriage has been a symbol of strength, stability, and hope, even as the world around them changed — most recently during the pandemic," he wrote. Indeed, both the queen and her husband witnessed firsthand how the world changed in nearly a century. Like millions of others, our thoughts are with the royal family on this difficult day.
