Kate Winslet gets candid on the LGBTQ community
While promoting her film Ammonite — in which she and Saoirse Ronan play lovers — Kate Winslet sat down with The Sunday Times for an interview with the headline: "Kate Winslet on why she's fed up with Hollywood hypocrisy. In the April 2021 interview, the actor made some bold accusations against the industry.
One of the hot topics was sexuality, and Winslet claimed to know several actors who are afraid to come out of the closet. "I cannot tell you the number of young actors I know — some well known, some starting out — who are terrified their sexuality will be revealed and that it will stand in the way of their being cast in straight roles," she told the publication. "Now that's f**ked up."
"I'm telling you," the actor continued. "A well-known actor has just got an American agent and the agent said, 'I understand you are bisexual. I wouldn't publicize that.' I can think of at least four actors absolutely hiding their sexuality. It's painful. Because they fear being found out. And that's what they say. 'I don't want to be found out.'"
Winslet went on to share that she knows that she could have taken her role in Ammonite from someone else, and she's done "not being honest about what [her] real opinions are." Additionally, Winslet shared that she was glad to bring an LGBTQ story to life on the big screen.
