The Real Reason Justin Bieber Isn't Attending The 2021 Grammys
Justin Bieber is nominated for four Grammys at the 63rd Grammy Awards, which are set to air on March 14, 2021. His 2020 album, Changes, is the first body of work he's released since 2015's Purpose. Changes is nominated for Best Pop Vocal album, "Yummy" got a nod for Best Pop Solo Performance, and "Intentions" featuring Quavo is up for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. He's also garnered a nomination for Best Country Duo/Group Performance for his work on Dan + Shay's "10,000 hours." As of this writing, Bieber's only received one win out of 14 total nominations, which he received for Best Dance Recording for "Where Are Ü Now" alongside Skrillex and Diplo.
Despite a handful of nominations, the "Holy" singer will not be attending the 2021 award ceremony, which will be held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and hosted by Trevor Noah. So, after gaining his highest total of nominations since 2016, why is Bieber boycotting music's biggest night? Read on to find out.
Is Justin Bieber skipping out because of a snub?
Justin Bieber will not show face at the 2021 Grammy Awards because he's not performing, per Page Six. Bieber's decision to skip out on the show comes after he voiced the fact that he believes his album Changes was snubbed, according to the Instagram post he shared after the nominations were announced in November 2020. "
To the Grammys I am flattered to be acknowledged and appreciated for my artistry. I am very meticulous and intentional about my music," the "Lonely" singer wrote. He continued, explaining his frustration further. "With that being said I set out to make an R&B album. 'Changes' was and is an R&B album. It is not being acknowledged as an R&B album, which is very strange to me."
His statement continued, detailing his respect for both R&B and pop music. "I grew up admiring R&B music and wished to make a project that would embody that sound. For this not to be put into that category feels weird considering from the chords to the melodies to the vocal style all the way down to the hip hop drums that were chosen it is undeniably, unmistakably an R&B album!"
"To be clear I absolutely love Pop music it just wasn't what I set out to make this time around" the Canada native concluded. "My gratitude for feeling respected for my work remains and I am honored to be nominated either way."
