Are Meghan And Harry Thinking Of Naming Their New Baby Diana?
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry revealed they are expecting a baby girl in summer 2021 during their interview with Oprah Winfrey, which aired on March 7, 2021 on CBS. Many have been wondering what Meghan and Harry will name their daughter, with one of the more obvious choices being Diana, after Harry's late mother. While the Duke and Duchess of Sussex did not share which names they have been considering, the rumors have continued to swirl since the couple's big announcement.
In the years since they got together, Meghan and Harry have honored Princess Diana several times. From the moment the couple got engaged, the presence of Harry's mom was important. Harry even used two of his mother's diamonds to flank the center stone of Meghan's engagement ring to "make sure that she's with us on this on this crazy journey together," according to Elle. And the tributes did not stop there.
In October 2018, for example, Meghan was spotted wearing a pair of earrings that once belonged to Diana, according to Town & Country. Meghan has also been spotted wearing one of Diana's Cartier watches, according to InStyle. During her sit-down with Winfrey, Meghan wore one of Diana's diamond bracelets (via CNN). Beyond those instances, the couple even paid tribute to Diana when they announced their second pregnancy on Valentine's Day, not unlike Lady Di did when she was pregnant with Harry (via People).
So, will these special nods to Harry's mom translate into another when their baby girl is born?
Meghan and Harry probably won't choose the name Diana for their baby girl
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry would undoubtedly love to honor Diana by naming their baby girl after her, but that's probably not going to happen, according to Page Six. A source told the outlet that the couple was "unliked" to choose the name Diana for their daughter. "Their biggest concern is that it would make her a bigger target for the media, and considerably increase public interest in the child's life," the source explained. And while that does open the door for them to give their daughter Diana as a middle name, that may not happen either.
"They might consider Diana as a middle name, but Princess Charlotte already has Diana as a middle name, and Harry and Meghan have not enjoyed the feeling they have been compared to — and pitted against — William and Kate in the media and by the palace," the source added. Of course, stranger things have happened. When Meghan was pregnant with her first child, baby name odds included Ivy, for a girl, and Arthur, for a boy, according to the Independent. Of course, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex went with something completely unpredicted when they chose Archie!
