The Questions That Oprah Failed To Ask Meghan And Harry Are Raising Eyebrows
Oprah Winfrey's much-anticipated interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry came and went, airing on CBS on March 7, 2021. With it blew in a whirlwind of stunning and saddening revelations about the couple's time as senior members of the British royal family (and ensuing fallout). There were some endearing and happy moments during the two-hour sit-down, of course. Prince Harry, for example, was the one to confirm fans' heavy speculation about their soon-to-be second child's sex. "It's a girl!" he exclaimed to Winfrey (via Variety), telling the talk show titan that "two it is" (including their son Archie), regarding the couple's children cap. "Now we've got... the four of us and our two dogs," Harry enthused.
Despite Meghan and Harry's joyous announcement, the interview largely included heavy revelations like how an undisclosed royal family member discussed the potential color of Archie's skin with Prince Harry before he was born. Meghan, who is biracial, told Oprah that concerns were raised to her husband about "what that would mean and what that would look like," per CBS News. If that wasn't shocking enough, there was also Meghan's heartbreaking confession of having suicidal thoughts due to the dual affront of feeling trapped by royal obligations while being attacked by the British media, via The Guardian. "I just didn't want to be alive anymore," the Duchess of Sussex revealed.
Despite the share-happy royal interview, many felt it only raised even more lingering questions. Read on to find out what those are.
Some feel Oprah Winfrey should have asked more about Meghan Markle's lack of support
In his March 2021 joint interview with Meghan Markle, Prince Harry omitted the identity of the royal family member who expressed concerns over his then-unborn son's skin tone and this naturally only raised more questions. Although, as Oprah Winfrey told CBS This Morning on March 8, 2021, it was not Queen Elizabeth II or Prince Phillip. When asked if she pressed Harry off-camera to identify the individual, Winfrey replied that although she did and Harry still didn't share whom it was, "he wanted to make sure that I knew... it was not his grandmother or his grandfather," according to HuffPost
There were plenty of other topics left not fully explored. One example, as the Daily Mail pointed out, was why, after Princess Diana's well-documented struggle as a royal upon marrying Prince Charles, Meghan did not receive preparation and support. "There was no guidance... there's no class on how to speak, how to cross your legs, how to be royal," Meghan told Oprah, adding that "that might exist for other members of the family" but not her.
One topic also absent was what exactly Kate Middleton said to push Meghan to tears. There was also outcry that Meghan's relationship with estranged father Thomas was skipped over in the interview... or was it? Keep reading to see what really happened.
Royal watchers mistakenly thought Oprah skipped discussing Meghan's family life
The interview between Oprah Winfrey, Meghan Markle, and Prince Harry was expected to run for 90 minutes, according to The New York Times, but there was so much content that it became a 2-hour-long slot. Obviously, in this span of time, a lot of material got covered. Nevertheless, viewers wondered why Oprah didn't ask Meghan about her relationship with her family, which has been reportedly strained over the years.
Well, as it turns out, Oprah didn't miss these questions at all. Instead, there was so much to say that the segment on Meghan's family aired the next day as part of an extended interview on CBS This Morning, per BuzzFeed. In the CBS clips, Oprah asked Meghan about how her dad, Thomas Markle, worked with the press and even sent a letter Meghan wrote him to the Daily Mail.
"Did it feel like betrayal?" Oprah asked. Meghan said that they called her father and asked, but he denied working with the media. Meghan told her dad, "You know, the Institution has never intervened for anything for us, but they can try to go in and kill this story. But if they do this once, we're not going to be able to use that same leverage to protect our own kids one day." However, Meghan's father was "unable" to do that, in Meghan's words, to which Oprah added, "so he lied to you."
It wasn't just her father who got covered. Meghan also spoke about her sister.
Meghan didn't hold back when talking about her sister
Meghan Markle, Prince Harry, and Oprah Winfrey covered an astounding amount of material in their interview, so much so that a second segment of the interview was aired on March 8, 2021 on CBS This Morning, which covered questions pertaining to Meghan's family.
Not only did Meghan feel betrayed by her father, but her half-sister on her father's side also came up. Samantha Markle wrote a "tell-all" book about Meghan called The Diary of Princess Pushy's Sister, according to Us Weekly. "I think it would be very hard to 'tell all' when you don't know me," Meghan said in the CBS clip. "This is a very different situation than my dad, right. When you talk about betrayal, betrayal comes from someone that you have a relationship with." Meghan explained that she grew up as an only child and said that the last time she saw Samantha was 18 or 19 years ago. They didn't grow up together.
Meghan added that Samantha changed her last name back to Markle when Meghan started dating Harry. "I think that says enough," Meghan added. It sure does!
