The Truth About Daniel Kaluuya's Girlfriend
Actor Daniel Kaluuya's newest film, Judas and the Black Messiah, has made a splash with critics and home audiences alike since dropping on HBO Max in February 2021. Not only is the period drama a potential contender for Best Picture at the Oscars, but Kaluuya is also generating Oscar buzz for his performance as slain Black Panther Party activist Fred Hampton. Kaluuya nabbed his first Oscar nomination in 2017 for Jordan Peele's horror flick Get Out and, while he did not win, maybe the second time around will prove to be the charm?
As Kaluuya has risen to fame in recent years with hits like Black Panther and Widows, he has been supported every step of the way by rumored girlfriend Amandla Crichlow (according to Us Weekly). Though the notoriously private pair has yet to confirm their relationship, Crichlow has appeared alongside Kaluuya on multiple red carpets, including the 2018 Golden Globes. (Clearly, they are more than just friends.) Crichlow does not have an Instagram, but Bustle reports that she hails from "the most badass" family, and even has a sister that Black Mirror fans might recognize! Here's your inside look at the media-shy couple.
Amandla Crichlow has activist roots
Though not (yet) a household name like boyfriend Daniel Kaluuya, Amandla Crichlow has some acting credits under her belt. IMDb lists her as an actor and producer, with previous roles on TV shows The Bill, The Final Act: Part 2, and Anonymous. Per IMDb, her sister Lenora Crichlow is also an actor, who starred in the terrifying Black Mirror episode, "White Bear." Before Kaluuya scored his big break with Get Out, he appeared in a separate Black Mirror episode, so it's possible that he and Amandla met through Lenora.
While the acting bug seems to run in the Crichlow clan, so does a certain penchant for showing up in the spotlight. Amandla and Lenora are the daughters of Black activist Frank Crichlow, whom The Guardian dubbed "a stalwart symbol of Black urban resistance in the face of police persecution" following his death in 2010. When the Crichlow patriarch immigrated to the U.K. from Trinidad, he opened a restaurant called The Mangrove, which became the target of racist policing (via The Guardian). A man ahead of his time, Frank was arrested for protesting police harassment in 1970, though he and eight defendants, "The Mangrove Nine," were later acquitted, according to The Guardian. Today, the Mangrove Community Association carries on Frank's legacy, as does his daughter Amandla. Kaluuya's performances in films that provide cutting commentary on American racism are also furthering the kind of activism Frank stood for, ultimately making him a great match for Amandla.
