Inside Michelle Pfeiffer And David E. Kelley's Marriage
Iconic actor Michelle Pfeiffer has had an impressive career. With countless awards under her belt and a lengthy list of film credits to her name, she is easily one of Hollywood's biggest stars. She first launched her career in the late 1970s and has been featured in major motion pictures across virtually every genre, including Scarface, Dangerous Minds, and Batman Returns, among many others, in the years since.
What is perhaps equally as impressive as her career is her successful, longtime marriage to television writer and producer David E. Kelley. The couple has been married since 1993 and they share two children together — a son, John, and an adopted daughter, Claudia. Kelley is also just as big a Hollywood star as his wife. While not everyone may know his name or face right off the bat, his shows are some of the most popular the industry has ever seen, including Big Little Lies, The Practice, and Doogie Howser, M.D.
So, what is this powerhouse Hollywood couple's key to finding happiness in the spotlight? Keep reading to find out more about Michelle Pfeiffer and David E. Kelley's marriage.
Michelle Pfeiffer and David E. Kelley had an unconventional relationship in the beginning
Actor Michelle Pfeiffer and TV producer David E. Kelley did not have a very traditional dating experience in the beginning. The pair met after being set up on a blind date and, at the time, Pfeiffer was already in the process of adopting her daughter Claudia. She told Good Housekeeping (via People) in 2007 that, when Claudia came, she and Kelley "had only been together for about two months." She continued, "So we had this child with us right away, and most people don't have that." Their relationship was unconventional to say the least, but she explained that, in a way, it made them closer and the couple tied the knot after only 10 months of dating.
"I really got to see him in a situation that certainly would separate the boys from the men. Obviously, he really rose to the occasion," she told the outlet. "We both got to see each other as parents before we progressed in our relationship together, and in a strange way, it took the pressure off us [...] I mean, it's a real testament to the kind of person he is, but also to the fact that sometimes the traditional way of doing things isn't always the best way."
While the beginning phases of their relationship may have been outside of the norm, it clearly worked for them as they are still happily married nearly three decades later.
Michelle Pfeiffer and David E. Kelley will not work with each other
Breakups and divorces among Hollywood's elite are extraordinarily common. So, it is all the more impressive that Michelle Pfeiffer and David E. Kelley have been able to maintain such a healthy, happy marriage for so long. Pfeiffer attributes one of the reasons why this may be to the fact that they have never worked with each other.
Despite Kelley's obvious talent when it comes to writing strong characters and producing successful shows and movies, Pfeiffer has never starred in any of his work. While fans might wish this power couple would team up, as they would surely make an excellent movie or show together, in January 2021, Pfeiffer told The New Yorker that she believes not working together is better for their relationship. "I've seen a lot of couples where they seem to have a really great marriage, and then they work together and next year they're filing for divorce," she explained.
While we may never see Pfeiffer join forces with her husband professionally, it is endearing to see a Hollywood couple that has such a solid, steady marriage and they are the definition of relationship goals.
