Meghan Markle's Statement To The Queen Is Turning Heads
It looks like Meghan Markle and Prince Harry may have thrown some shade at the Queen after she announced the couple "will not be returning as working members of The Royal Family" and thus, stripping them of their titles. Her declaration came on Feb. 19, 2021, just over one year after the duo announced they would be stepping down from their royal duties to live in America. The announcement also came one month prior to their scheduled review of their agreement, per the Daily Mail.
Despite leaving their life in England behind, Harry and Markle "absolutely, no question" wanted to maintain their royal status, a source told the outlet. However, "They do respect the decision, but they always made clear they were committed to doing the roles."
Although Markle and Harry seemed to think they could have the best of both worlds, "The Queen has written confirming that in stepping away from the work of the royal family it is not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service," the Palace's statement read. Concluding their remarks, they added, "While all are saddened by their decision, The Duke and Duchess remain much loved members of the family." Keep scrolling to see what the couple said in response.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry wanted to have it all
The Queen may believe that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry "stepping away from the work of the royal family [makes it] not possible to continue with ... a life of public service," the couple begs to differ. "As evidenced by their work over the past year, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain committed to their duty and service to the UK and around the world and have offered their continued support to the organizations they have represented regardless of official roles," the pair said in a statement, per the Daily Mail. "We can all live a life of service. Service is universal."
Following their response, people were torn. Some slammed their actions while others praised their bravery. "The queen has dedicated 69 years to service and continues to do so, without [whining]! I find this statement disrespectful, egotistical and quite frankly, a slap in the face of our beloved Monarch!" one person tweeted. "Everyone is replaceable," someone else wrote, adding their remarks "belittled the work of the Queen and the rest of the royal family."
On the contrary, another said they're "Very Proud of Prince Harry & Megan," writing: "They don't need to be part of a #RoyalFamily to do what's right and what's in their heart." One more person congratulated the couple for "making a life of their own," adding, "I think they will prove it's perfectly possible to serve their community and charitable interests outside 'the firm.'"
