Why Donald Trump Jr.'s Tweet About Ted Cruz Is Causing A Stir
Senator Ted Cruz found himself in the middle of a political scandal just as his home state of Texas entered a state of disaster. Let's back up, though. In February 2021, a massive snowstorm combined with a polar vortex hit Texas, which rarely sees any snowfall, particularly hard, per Vox.
When Texas was hit with an unprecedented amount of snow, the state froze...literally. Power plants were not equipped to convert the state's abundant natural resources, such as coal and natural gas, into energy. Further complicating the situation was that unlike every other state in the country, Texas has its own power grid, meaning it could not siphon power from neighboring states, per The Cut. Add that to the fact that Texas is a hot, arid state where homes aren't built for cold weather, and you have the ingredients for a perfect storm.
So, as Texas residents struggled to find water and heat their homes, or, in the worst of cases, fled to government-organized shelters to seek warmth, the state's long-standing senator was photographed with his wife and kids boarding a plane to Cancun. As you can imagine, his impromptu vacation didn't go over well with his constituents.
As you can probably also imagine, Donald Trump Jr. was quick to come to his defense. However, the eldest Trump scion made one massive mistake when defending the disgraced senator.
Donald Trump Jr. made some big mistake
When photos emerged of Ted Cruz boarding a plane to Cancun as Texas faced its worst natural disaster in decades, the backlash was almost instantaneous. After all, the optics of going on vacation while your constituents quite literally freeze aren't good. The political support for Cruz was few and far between, but he found some from Donald Trump Jr., who quickly backed up his father's former opponent.
First, he fired back at the Lincoln Project, an anti-Trump Republican organization that publicly criticized Cruz's ill-timed vacation. "Still so much better than covering for sexual predators," Trump tweeted, referring to allegations of sexual harassment against one of the organization's cofounders. Unsurprisingly, fellow Twitter users were quick to point out the irony of Donald Trump Jr. criticizing leniency against sexual violence when Donald Trump Sr. has nearly thirty allegations of sexual assault under his belt, per Business Insider.
Then, he took aim at the Democrats: "The hypocrisy of those trying to cancel Ted Cruz who have been totally silent on their Democrat Governor's incompetence is telling," he wrote. "My thoughts on the Cancún Cruz fauxoutrage! #Cruz #CancunGate is fake." He then linked out to a rumble video where he expounded on his thoughts. "He's a senator. He doesn't manage crises in states. That's a governor's job," Trump explained. One small error: the governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, isn't a Democrat, he's a Republican just like Trump Jr. Yikes.
