Celebrity Couples That Are Totally Addicted To Each Other
The thing about addictive behaviors — be it drugs, booze, gambling, or any other vice or compulsion — is that, for a little while, they make you feel really good, and it's easy to get hooked on the high. It's when the lows hit and you start scratching walls, having cold sweats and withdrawal, and selling your stuff to get more of whatever kick you need that make addiction dangerous.
Addictive and codependent relationships may not send partners to the hospital (at least not all the time), but the toxicity and drama can make it hard for couples to break it off once and for all. Certain celebrity couples are so on-again-off-again that it's pretty clear they can't live without one another — even if they drive each other crazy. Whether it's romance, co-dependence, or they're just taking "breaks" (we see you, Ross Gellar), these stars can't stay away from each other for long. These celebrity couples are addicted to one another ... for better or for worse.
Maybe meeting on the set of a horror show isn't a great foundation
Emma Roberts and Evan Peters' relationship has been a rollercoaster of on-again-off-again engagements and even alleged domestic violence, but they just can't quit each other. The stars met on the set of Adult World (2013) and made their public debut as a couple in January 2013.
Unfortunately, the bliss was short-lived. Around six months later Roberts was arrested for domestic violence after she and Peters allegedly fought in a hotel in Montreal. Cops arrived to find Peters sporting a bloody nose and a bite mark. Sources close to Roberts told TMZ both partners were hitting one another, but only Roberts was arrested because only Peters had visible injuries. He declined to press charges.
"Emma is very dramatic," a source told Us Weekly. "[She gets] wound up... When they are good, they are crazy in love." A second source said, "Their romance is pretty extreme. They just behave in a way that's very passionate."
In December 2013, the pair got engaged. They called it off in June 2015, got back together less than three months later, then broke up again in May 2016, after which she briefly dated actor Christopher Hines. Peters and Roberts reunited once more in September 2016, and by November 2016, sources confirmed to Us Weekly that the pair was engaged again...for now.
Justin Bieber still triggers Selena Gomez
Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber went public with their drama-filled romance in February 2011 at the Vanity Fair Oscar party. In November 2012, the couple split up for the first time after Bieber allegedly misbehaved at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. The Mirror reported that Bieber and Gomez continued an on-again-off-again romance for more than a year after their initial split, with each dating other people in between.
In January 2014, Gomez cancelled her tour and secretly went to rehab, Radar Online reported, only to leave after just two weeks and be snapped with Bieber. The couple would be seen together sporadically over the next year. Bieber told Complex in September 2015 of the doomed romance, "We were so in love. Nothing else mattered ... Your full identity can't be in that person. My identity was in her. Her identity was in me." In February 2016, Gomez bemoaned to W magazine, "I'm so exhausted. I honestly am so done. I care about his health and well-being. But I can't do it anymore."
That was false: After Bieber went public with his brief romance with model Sofia Richie in August 2016, Gomez lashed out, cancelled her tour and checked into rehab again. Later in 2016, Gomez rebounded with The Weeknd, but they split in October 2017 ... when she was spotted with Bieber yet again. By April 2018, they'd broken up again, and he moved on and married Hailey Baldwin, which is rumored to have been a trigger for Gomez's October 2018 mental breakdown.
Soulmates can have 'irreconcilable differences,' right?
Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green met on the set of Hope & Faith in 2004 when the stunner was just 18 years old and Green was 30. Despite not knowing him from his 90210 fame, Fox told The New York Times Magazine she was convinced they were meant to be together forever after he "accidentally touched [her] leg" and "literal electricity shooting through [her] and out [of her] from every direction."
By November 2006, they were engaged, but they never made it down the aisle and amicably split in February 2009. That breakup didn't stick, and they had a surprise wedding in 2010. Fox and Green became parents to two sons, and in 2014, Fox admitted that parenting put a strain on their relationship. "You will go through phases where you're just not getting along. ... That's going to happen, and it's going to feel impossible to you sometimes, she told Men's Health. She added, "Brian is my soulmate. I happen to believe that. He's definitely meant to be the father of my children. That makes it easier for me to work through things."
In September 2015, Fox filed for divorce from Green, citing "irreconcilable differences." She listed the date of separation as June 2015, but they were still seen together all the time. Less than a year later, Fox became pregnant with their third child, and she and Green reconciled. By May 2020, it was all over again, after Fox had apparently moved on from Green with her Midnight in the Switchgrass costar, Machine Gun Kelly.
Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne - Yes, it's as crazy as it seems
Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne have been through it all — addiction, alleged abuse, even mental breakdowns — and they always come back for more. Consider what the couple, who married in 1982, went through in 2016 alone. In the summer of that year, it was revealed that Ozzy had an ongoing affair with the family's hairstylist, Michelle Pugh —and that she wasn't his only mistress. He was reportedly battling sex addiction and entered rehab for the condition. Sharon kicked him out over the affair in May 2016, but the couple eventually reconciled.
Add to that the time Ozzy literally tried to murder Sharon in 1989 and his ongoing struggles with substance abuse, and it's fair to say this coupling is anything but ordinary.
Ozzy explained on Good Morning America (via Page Six), "'And they both lived happily ever after.' I'd like to find the person who wrote that and poke him in the eye with a burned stick," he griped. "Some days [marriage] is good, so some days [are] terrible, some days you just drift apart for a while, but you get back on the horse, you know?"
By September 2018, Sharon was on The Talk (via People), joking about Ozzy's affairs, which was a surprising amount of levity for the situation, given that she also later revealed that she drugged her rocker hubby to elicit his confession of infidelity. Addicted to each other? More like co-conductors on their own personal marriage crazy train.
Miley twerked her way back into Liam's heart
Miley Cyrus met Liam Hemsworth while the pair filmed The Last Song (2010). The former Disney darling and the Aussie hunk hit it off immediately and went public in early 2010, but things got rocky. They broke up for the first time in August 2010 because they were too busy to see each other, but reunited a month later. By November 2010, they took a "time out" to focus on their careers and be single for a while...but not for very long. By March 2011, they were back on, and in June 2012, they announced their engagement.
The dynamic duo didn't make it down the aisle. After months of speculation, they called the whole thing off. They were separated for a wild two years of twerking until reuniting, seemingly for good, in November 2015. Cyrus earned a reputation as a hard partier when she and Hemsworth were on the rocks, but she seems to have given that up.
A source told People, "Liam couldn't handle when Miley acted nutty. Miley's problem was that she thought Liam was boring when he complained. [Cyrus is] toning things down and acting more normal." The insider added, "She even stopped hanging out with friends that are too wild. She is very focused on making things work with Liam...[she is] doing everything to please and make Liam happy."
The pair were allegedly planning to marry at the home they shared in Malibu, but it was destroyed in a wildfire in November 2018. As of this writing, those wedding plans are supposedly still on track, albeit delayed.
Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick may never totally quit each other
Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick have been together off and on for more than a decade. The pair first got together in 2006, and Keeping Up With The Kardashians has chronicled their relationship since 2007. They split up several times over the the next five years; reuniting after Kardashian learned she was pregnant with their first child, son Mason. They briefly split again in October 2009 but reunited in December 2009 when Mason was born. Seven months later they were "off again," but got back together and welcomed daughter Penelope in July 2012.
Kardashian and Disick went strong until June 2014, when Kardashian kicked Disick out due to his hard partying; the same month he was hospitalized for drinking excessively. They made it work and had son Reign in December 2014. In July 2015, Disick was busted allegedly cheating on Kardashian with stylist Chloe Bartoli. The couple remained apart until November 2016, when they reportedly began living together once again.
The reunion didn't last long. By May 2017, Kardashian began publicly dating model Younes Bendjima, which TMZ reported made Disick incredibly jealous because still had hopes for a reconciliation. Disick moved on with Sofia Richie, of which Radar Online reported Kardashian was having a difficulty accepting, because she'd gotten used to "having [Disick] at her beck and call." However, she tried her best, even dining out with the couple as what may possibly be the world's hottest third wheel.
Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid are a paradise and a war zone
Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid's relationship is more paradise than war zone, and they can't stay apart for too long as a result. The pair split briefly in June 2016 but reunited almost immediately. A source told Us Weekly, "They broke up and got back together almost right away. Right now, it's back on, but it could be off again in an hour. They are young and keep going back and forth. Things are testy between them."
By March 2018, however, sources told The Sun that the singer and the supermodel had split again after "work pressures" and busy schedules caused them to grow apart. Malik and Hadid each released their own statements confirming the breakup, but three months later were spotted smooching on the streets of New York City again. By September 2018, The Sun reported that Malik was selling his U.K. home to move to the states to be with Hadid full-time.
Rihanna still has Drake in his feelings
Rihanna and Drake have been on-again-off-again for seven years, going all the way back to 2009. Between hookups, collaborations, Chris Brown feuds, and tattoos, sources close to the quasi-couple insist that they'll never be totally done with one another, though they recently split in October 2016 for the umpteenth time.
"She doesn't want to be held down," a source told Us Weekly. Another source dished, "They will always be close. If they end up together, it could happen, but not now." Insiders told E! News at the time that RiRi and Drizzy are "seeing other people at the moment. [They're] not exclusive anymore. They still love each other, but their schedules have gotten in the way. Anything can change between them though, for better or worse. They are still in each other's lives."
This seems like an addiction Rihanna was able to kick: In the June 2018 issue of Vogue, she revealed that Drake embarrassed her at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards with his fawning speech, adding, "We don't have a friendship now, but we're not enemies either. It is what it is." Drake still isn't entirely over RiRi, however. He revealed on LeBron James' The Shop in October 2018 that he wanted to have a family with the singer ... but instead had a lovechild with a porn star.
John Mellencamp and Meg Ryan finally put a ring on it
Rocker John Mellencamp dated one-time America's sweetheart Meg Ryan from 2011 to 2014, and it sounds like he was much more addicted to her than she was to him — at least for a time. Sources told People that distance was a factor in their initial split, with Ryan residing in New York and Mellencamp in Indiana — and Mellencamp himself admitted to Rolling Stone in December 2013 that he hated the Big Apple and "would die" in his native Indiana. Mellencamp then dated model Christie Brinkley for about a year.
However, Mellencamp told Howard Stern (via Page Six) in March 2017, "I loved Meg Ryan. She hates me to death ... I think it's because I'm a child. I throw fits, I gripe, I complain. I'm moody. Every bad thing that a fella can be, that's me." When Stern asked Mellencamp if he'd made any efforts to reconcile with the actress, he replied, "I've done that. She just doesn't want anything to do with me. And I can't blame her."
By July 2017, he reunited with Ryan, with a source telling People, "They have a bond." That bond was strong indeed: On Nov. 8, 2018, Ryan announced on Instagram that she and the "Jack and Diane" crooner were engaged. Sadly, they later broke up again.
Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake couldn't stop the feeling
Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel married in 2012, but their road to the altar was a very bumpy one. They began dating in 2007 and broke up in September 2009, with sources telling E! News that they're "always on and off." They reunited shortly after, but all wasn't well. In October 2010, Us Weekly claimed that one month prior, Timberlake spent a three-day weekend hooking up with actress Olivia Munn, despite reportedly being in a relationship with Biel. In March 2011, Timberlake and Biel announced another split, but by December 2011, they were engaged. They've been together ever since, probably because they just can't quit each other.
Katy Perry's love for Orlando... bloomed once again
Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry called it quits in March 2017 after allegedly about 10 months together, but insiders claim they never actually cut ties — and they were spotted getting cozy again in August 2017.
A source told E! News, "They have never cut communication since they broke up. They just took a break because it was the best thing for them at that time, [but they] are seeing each other again. Katy and Orlando want this to work this time, so they are working on mending their relationship. They've had some really good talks and have a better understanding on their needs. Time will tell at this point, but [things are] looking very positive." The source added, "When they went out in public, they were aware that people would start speculating that they were back on, and they are OK with that. They love each other and never stopped."
Perry and Bloom made their reunion red carpet official in September 2018, and were reportedly "talking about the future" — *wink, nod* — just a month later, according to sources speaking with People. Bloom has also apparently been plying Perry with vegan fare, so at the very least, the pair is at least addicted to healthy eating.
John Mayer is just waiting for Bloom to blow it
Perry and John Mayer just couldn't quit each other, either. In fact, a source told People that Perry's split from Mayer "was much harder" than her breakup from Bloom, and it may be because they never actually made a clean break. E! News reported that Mayer and Perry began dating in August 2012 and split in March 2013, reunited in June 2013, broke up in February 2014, got back together in April 2015, and called it quits seemingly for good in July 2015. However, insiders claim that if Mayer had his way, they'd be together yet again.
A source told Radar Online in July 2016, "[John's] incredibly patient and has been planning this for a while." The source also noted that Mayer, who once actively courted press, has kept a low profile in hopes of enchanting Perry again. "He fully expects her to come running back to him when things sour with Orlando," the source said, adding, "There's a load of unfinished business between John and Katy."
Mayer then dropped "Still Feel Like Your Man," which he later confirmed is about Perry. Here's a sample of the lyrics: "I still keep your shampoo in my shower, in case you wanna wash your hair / And I know that you probably found yourself some more somewhere / But I do not really care, cause as long as it is there / I still feel like your man." Oof. His next track should be called "Messy Love Triangle."
We're pretty 'confident' Wilmer and Demi are still on
Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama had an on-again-off-again relationship for six years before splitting in June 2016.
Lovato's relationship with Valderrama may have been closely related to her addictive personality, in general. The singer revealed to Cosmopolitan in September 2015 that all of their breakups were related to her relapsing in her eating disorders, alcoholism, and drug abuse. "Your mind starts setting up the relapse before you take that drink or that first hit," she told the mag. "The times we'd broken up, I had already gone to that place of, 'Yeah, this is what's happening.' I didn't realize it at the time, but I just wanted to sabotage everything around me so that I could sabotage myself."
In November 2016, she explained to Glamour that Valderrama may well have been another of her dependencies while they were together. "Being sick was always a part of my relationship with him," she said. "I needed to let go of that. It was hard to depart from somebody who saw everything, but it may be nice to start fresh with somebody. Because that person I was when I was a lot younger is not who I am today."
It remains to be seen whether Valderrama and Lovato will reunite again, although there have been hints, like the cozy selfie Lovato posted in June 2017, a year after their split, or the fact that Valderrama has reportedly been in "constant communication" with Lovato ever since her scary near-death overdose in the summer of 2018.
Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna: Reality TV's perfect creation
Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna — who was allegedly dumped by Tyga so Tyga could date Kardashian's sister Kylie Jenner — had a predictably dramatic romance from about January 2016 to February 2017. They each accused the other of cheating a slew of times, and she got pregnant with their daughter Dream after only a few months of dating. The couple quickly got engaged, then split, and fought, broke up, and made up constantly.
Even after they called off their wedding in February 2017, it seems they may have been hooking up because during Kardashian's alleged revenge porn rant in July 2017, he claimed to have still been sleeping with Chyna while she claimed to be single and dating other men.
Even though their relationship is reportedly over, they are still constant, if unwelcome, presences in one another's lives. In September 2017, the pair called a truce of sorts in its custody war over Dream. TMZ reported that Kardashian wanted to cap child support payments at $10,000 per month, while Chyna wanted upwards of $50,000. They reportedly negotiated to $20,000 per month, and Chyna dropped domestic violence allegations she'd made against Kardashian. At the time of this writing, that agreement is back on the negotiating table. What's not up for discussion? A rekindled romance, as Chyna indicated by literally laughing when TMZ posed the question.
Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin made it official
Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin may be just as dependent as he and Selena Gomez were— and Baldwin was so hung up on Bieber that she waited around for him for years. She spent New Year's Eve with Biebs in 2014, but in March 2015, a source told Hollywood Life that Bieber ditched Baldwin for a former fling at his birthday party, leading her to leave the celebration early.
The pair were then photographed making out to ring in the New Year on Jan. 1, 2016. In the March 2016 issue of GQ, Bieber said that Baldwin wasn't even his girlfriend (something she admitted to E! News a month prior), but that he loved her, explaining, "I don't want to put anyone in a position where they feel like I'm only theirs, only to be hurt in the end ... In the past I've hurt people and said things that I didn't mean to make them happy in the moment. So now I'm just more so looking at the future ... What if Hailey ends up being the girl I'm gonna marry? If I rush into anything, if I damage her, then it's always gonna be damaged."
In December 2017, while Bieber was dating Selena Gomez, he reportedly reached out to Baldwin to make amends for whatever "damage" he did. It worked: He and Gomez split in March 2018, and he and Baldwin tied the knot six months later.
Mariah Carey and Bryan Tanaka can't 'GTFO' of each other's heads
Mariah Carey hooked up with backup dancer Bryan Tanaka after her contentious split from fiance James Packer in October 2016, but the rebound didn't last long initially. TMZ reported that the couple split in late March 2017 because Tanaka was jealous of her amicable relationship with ex-husband and co-parent to Dem Babies, Nick Cannon ... and because she got sick of being a sugar mama to the allegedly fame-hungry Tanaka.
"The split happened very recently. Mariah ended it — everyone hoped that she would. She has better things to focus on," a source close to the "Always Be My Baby" singer told People in April 2017. "Mariah is happy. She is focusing on her kids and new music ... Bryan was a good distraction after she split from James. This is a good time for her to be single and focus on herself."
A month after the undisputed Queen of Christmas allegedly told Tanaka to "GTFO," however, People reported that the couple were getting cozy again over dinner in Beverly Hills — and they've been going strong (and keeping the PDA game on point) ever since.
Gym, Tan, These Guys Should Probably Call It Quits
Jersey Shore co-stars Ronnie Ortiz-Magro and Sammi Sweetheart were famously off-and-on, and now he's got an even more extreme, seemigly toxic and roller-coaster relationship with Jen Harley.
Ortiz-Magro began dating Harley in July 2017, and it went relatively smoothly for a while — they even welcomed a baby girl in early April 2018. However, in an episode of Jersey Shore: Family Vacation that aired later that month (via Us Weekly), Ortiz-Magro was spotted getting close with another woman, though he later denied any cheating actually took place. Days after the episode aired, Ortiz-Magro took to Instagram (captured by TooFab) to accuse Harley of cheating and called her all sorts of slut-shaming names. The pair got into what appeared to be a physical altercation when Harley attempted to record him in an Instagram Live and they split, with a source telling Us Weekly that Harley kicked Ortiz-Magro out because he cheated.
By June 2018, there were more break-ups, reunions, and physical fights, TMZ reported. Harley was arrested for domestic battery after she allegedly dragged Ortiz-Magro with her car — while their daughter was inside the vehicle. Charges were later dropped. After another reunion in July, things got ugly again by October. Harley and Ortiz-Magro got into a fight over their daughter, and Ortiz-Magro ended up with a black eye and screenshots of texts from Harley allegedly trying to extort him.
All that and yet, days later ... They were back together.
Here's hoping The Weeknd's face can handle all this
In September 2015, Bella Hadid and The Weeknd were photographed holding hands at New York Fashion Week, confirming their romance to the world. By that December, however, E! News reported the couple were on a break because of their schedules. Two months later, at the Grammys in February 2016, however, they were back on in a big way, making their red carpet debut together.
Sadly, People reported that the couple called it quits in November 2016 because, again, their hectic schedules made it too hard to see one another. Two weeks later, they were forced to interact at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, where Hadid modeled and The Weeknd performed — and she delivered the most GIFable swerve of all time.
Hadid hadn't been linked with anyone else since, but TMZ reported in January 2017 that The Weeknd was dating Selena Gomez. Gomez and The Weeknd called it quits that October, and a month later, E! News reported that the "Can't Feel My Face" singer was spotted leaving Hadid's New York City apartment after a casual meeting. In May 2018, People reported that the couple were fully back on and making out at the Cannes Film Festival, and E! News reports that the pair have been going strong ever since reuniting.
Talk about a toxic triangle
Page Six reported in May 2018 that NBA star Ben Simmons allegedly cheated on singer Tinashe with Kendall Jenner. The next month, TMZ nabbed a photo of Jenner sucking face and cuddling with Anwar Hadid — 17-year-old little brother of models Gigi and Bella — though sources insisted Jenner and Hadid were just pals.
Weeks later, Jenner was spotted partying with Simmons again. By September 2018, however, TMZ reported that Jenner was seen out with Hadid again, and People reported in October 2018 that they seemed "very much together." They even double-dated with Kourtney Kardashian and Luka Sabbat!
Sadly for Hadid, though, Jenner was spotted reuniting with Simmons in November 2018, according to Page Six. After Simmons and Jenner's most recent hookup, Hadid posted melodramatic Instagram stories, writing (via Us Weekly), "I wonder if I could be loved as deeply as I love" alongside a photo of the phrase "Why are you still in my mind" written on the inside of his wrist.
