Patrick Mahomes' Mom Blasts Refs, Calls Out Gisele After Super Bowl
There were some big moments at the 2021 Super Bowl, including a streaker running out on the field, The Weeknd's (somewhat nauseating) halftime performance, and memorable commercials, to name a few. However, what sticks out for Randi Mahomes — mother to Kansas City Chiefs' quarterback Patrick Mahomes — are the referees' calls.
So what's going on? Randi seemed upset with the Chiefs' abundance of game penalties, which some might argue contributed to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' 31-9 win. The mom also seemingly took a jab at Gisele Bündchen, the wife of Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady. "If you have to have the ref on your team is that really winning!!! @giseleoffical lol," Mahomes' mother tweeted. Interesting tag there, Randi!
Based on Bündchen's Twitter activity, she spent the evening cheering on her husband and fellow players and she has yet to respond to Mahomes' mother's tweet as of this writing. Given Bundchen's silence, either she's taking the high road, or she's just as confused as some fans out there. If you're also feeling a bit befuddled, keep on reading for a breakdown of what seemingly led to Randi's tweet.
The Chiefs got bogged down in penalties
In addition to Randi Mahomes and fans, President Joe Biden also had high hopes for Patrick Mahomes. In an interview before the game, Biden told CBS' Norah O'Donnell about who he'd place a bet on. "Obviously, [Tom] Brady's a great quarterback. [Patrick] Mahomes seems like he's got a lot of potential. And so, I'd probably take a shot with the young guy I didn't expect as much from," Biden said.
However, there were a lot of penalties at the expense of the Chiefs. The first penalty was made when Tom Brady passed to Mike Evans and the Chiefs cornerback Bashaud Breeland got flagged for pass interference, causing the Chiefs a 34-yard penalty, to name one example. "You can't have that," coach Andy Reid said about the Chiefs' penalties, which amounted to 11 by game's end, according to the NFL's website. "You can't have penalties, not that many... You're taking space away from yourself. Either defensively or offensively. It is uncharacteristic, and it's too bad it happened today."
Let's just say the Chiefs seemed to be as lost as The Weeknd in his light maze by the end of the game.
A fight erupted between Tyrann Mathieu and Tom Brady
Although Tom Brady was the game's man of the hour, he didn't score the Super Bowl victory without a few hiccups. One such hiccup included a heated exchange with Chiefs cornerback Tyrann Mathieu. At the end of their altercation, Mathieu ended up with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty while Brady received none, according to the New York Post.
In a somewhat cryptic and since-deleted tweet, Mathieu alluded to what went down between him and Brady. "He called me something I won't repeat but yeah I'll let all the media throw me under bus as if I did something or said something to him ... go back to my previous games against TB12 I showed him nothing but respect. Look at my interviews about him... I show grace," he tweeted, according to Yahoo! Sports. (Both Brady and Mathieu praised each other before the game, per Sportsnaut). After the game, Mathieu admitted that he was shocked at the quarterback's behavior. "I never really saw that side of Tom Brady, to be honest," Mathieu said, according to a tweet from NESN reporter Zack Cox. "But whatever. I'm over it. No comment."
Since the altercation, Brady has reportedly reached out to Mathieu, apologizing for losing his temper. He supposedly told Mathieu that he considered him a "class act" and a "great leader," ESPN reported. Brady also added that he wished he could've apologized in person.
Randi Mahomes called out the coverage of her son
Now that we've caught you up on all of the penalty drama and beefing, let's take a look at Randi Mahomes' other tweets about the game result. As it turns out, Randi took issue with how some news outlets reported on her son, Patrick Mahomes. "Love our chiefs!! Heartbroken to see how @espn @SportsCenter tried making fun of my son," she tweeted. "But i know his heart and love for his team and chiefs nation! Thank you chiefs fans.. don't forget these are someone's son tv. #godisgreaterthenmyhighsandmylows."
It's not clear what specifically Randi found offensive, although it is obvious she holds no ill will toward Tom Brady's fam. "Thank you Mrs. Brady for your kind words," she captioned a shot of her talking with Brady's mom. She also called the QB's parents a "class act." Hmm, maybe Randi's tweet referencing Gisele Bündchen wasn't a jab after all.
As for Patrick Mahomes, he sent out a hopeful tweet after the game. "Thank you #ChiefsKingdom for all the support," he said. "Wasn't the way we wanted it to end, but we will be back!" See, Randi? There's always next year.
