Inside Kate Hudson's Relationship With Her Estranged Father
Many fans already know Kate Hudson is very close with her mother, Goldie Hawn, but what about the relationship she has with her dad? Hawn was married to the Almost Famous star's father, Bill Hudson (pictured above), from 1976 until their divorce in 1982, per People. However, after the two uncoupled, Bill lost touch with the actor and his son Oliver Hudson. Bill went on to remarry Laverne & Shirley star Cindy Williams, and the couple welcomed two children before their divorce in 2000. Bill had another daughter in 2006 with his ex-girlfriend Caroline Graham.
Following years of estrangement and being raised by Hawn's longtime partner Kurt Russell, Hudson expressed her desire to reconnect to her dad during a January 2021 episode of her Sibling Revelry podcast, co-hosted with her brother Oliver. "We've been talking so much about sibling relationships and distraught relationships or good relations — and we're sitting here like we have the best family, we're so great and yet we don't ever acknowledge the fact that we have four other siblings. Four," she said on her show, per People. "So I've been thinking about the Hudsons. Thinking it's important that we reach out with all of our siblings and maybe connect with them a little bit."
Although Hudson typically tries to keep her family matters out of the public eye, she further opened up about the situation during an appearance on Sunday Today with Willie Geist. Keep scrolling to see what Hudson had to say about the situation.
Why Kate Hudson decided to speak out
When speaking with Willie Geist on the Jan. 24, 2021, episode of Sunday Today, Kate Hudson opened up about disclosing the previously private situation with her father on her podcast. "I think that estrangement is unfortunately quite common. I think it's important for people to talk about that," she said, adding, "Sometimes [we] need a little bit of talk and humor to move us into places where we can heal some of the wounds that have affected us from our families."
Hudson described her family situation as a "41-year-old issue" and noted how she is still grateful for the loved ones in her life. "I have a great family, I have a beautiful mother, I have a stepfather who stepped in and played a huge, huge part in sharing what it is to have a dependable father figure in our life." Although stepfather Kurt Russell acted as a paternal figure to the Music actor, "It doesn't take away from the fact that we didn't know our dad," she explained. Hudson hoped by sharing her family's truth they could be a relatable resource to others, aside from their public persona as a big happy family. "People sometimes need to hear that they're not alone in that," she expressed.
Although Hudson didn't share if she has yet to extend an olive branch to her dad, it sounds like she's ready for a reconciliation. As for Bill? He told the Daily Mail in 2015 that his kids with Goldie Hawn are "dead" to him. Ouch.
