What The Trumps Really Looked Like Arriving In Florida
Former President Donald Trump and his wife, Melania Trump, left the White House on Jan. 20, 2021, to make way for their successors, President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden. While Trump's term was contentious, to say the least, he did follow one presidential tradition by leaving a note in the Oval Office for Biden.
Trump did not attend Biden's inauguration and instead opted to fly to his home, Mar-a-Lago, in Florida to begin a new chapter post-presidency. He concluded his time in office first with a farewell video, where he made some statements that caused a stir (what's new?) and then said goodbye again on the morning of Jan. 20, 2021 to a crowd at Joint Base Andrews before boarding Air Force One for the last time as president.
"I will always fight for you. I will be watching, I will be listening and I will tell you the future of the country has never been better," Trump said to the audience, according to ABC News. Trump concluded by saying, "We will be back in some form... Have a good life — we will see you soon."
While Trump made headlines for his farewell address, Melania made headlines for the notable outfit she chose to wear on her last day as first lady. But when she and Trump landed in Florida, she had a totally different look. Not only that, but physically she and Trump gave off a different vibe. Here's the story.
Melania's change of outfits drew attention
Upon leaving the White House, Melania Trump made headlines for wearing all black and no American designers. While clothing might not mean that much in the big picture, there is an unspoken tradition of American political figures and their families supporting American designers – something both Dr. Jill Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris did during the inauguration.
Melania bid farewell to the American people by saying, "Being your first lady was my greatest honor. Thank you for your love and support. You will be in my thoughts and prayers. God bless you all, God bless your families, and God bless this beautiful nation," according to USA Today.
Melania delivered her closing address in a Dolce and Gabbana black dress, a black Chanel jacket, black Christian Louboutin heels, and a Hermes Birkin bag made of crocodile, according to The Palm Beach Post, valued at $50,000.
However, she changed her wardrobe on the Air Force One flight and landed at the Palm Beach International Airport wearing an orange and navy, long-sleeved Gucci dress, valued at $3,700, according to the Gucci website. In their description, the dress is described as paying homage to "'70s psychedelia, which played with visual distortion, surreal imagery and wide color spectrums."
While Melania's outfits caused a stir, former President Donald Trump did not change his outfit, remaining in the same suit and red tie he wore while leaving the White House. But it wasn't just the Trumps' outfits that got people talking — their demeanor caught the attention of onlookers.
Why is Melania smiling so much?
Donald and Melania Trump landed in Florida as they began their new lives away from the White House. While people initially noticed Melania's outfits, the second most notable thing was how happy Melania looked. Glamour pointed out that Melania looked "excited" and "relieved" to be leaving. This happy body language was also not lost on the good people of Twitter.
Donald Trump's former lawyer, Michael Cohen, first tweeted a comment about Melania's all-black look upon leaving the White House, saying: "Is it me or does [Melania Trump] look like she is dressed for a funeral?" While her color choice was certainly somber, her facial expressions seemed anything but.
Film director Judd Apatow tweeted his take on the Trumps, too. "It will be so nice not to learn about every awful thing they do on a daily basis," he wrote. "I must say Melania looks happy today. She never wanted any of this. One day we will learn what their arrangement was and it will be even crazier than we thought."
Journalist Vuyo Mkize tweeted, "First time Melania looking genuinely joyful. Ol' girl is just happy to be done with it, finally." While the consensus was that Melania looked happy, how did Trump seem when he landed in Florida?
Trump wasn't smiling as much as Melania
While Melania Trump landed in Florida looking happy, wearing an orange, Gucci dress, former President Donald Trump deplaned Air Force One with a more resigned look. He certainly wasn't smiling, but he did offer a few waves to the crowd at the Palm Beach International Airport.
As Trump's motorcade drove from the airport to Mar-a-Lago, supporters cheered and waved to him from the side of the roads, according to The New York Times. The outlet observed many in the crowd were "screaming in delight to catch a glimpse of him in his final moments as president."
The Associated Press shared a video clip of the event and captures a moment where Trump is cheering back at the crowd and waving. One supporter told the outlet that he "couldn't say enough good things about" Trump, so it's clear that the former president has moved himself in a state where he'll continue to receive support.
