The Truth About Selena Gomez And Demi Lovato's Friendship
Singer, songwriter, and actress Demi Lovato stunned the masses when she revealed to Harper's Bazaar in April 2020 that she was no longer friends with her long time pal, Selena Gomez. UM, WUT?! When asked about a sentimental Instagram Story where Gomez honored Lovato with after her Grammy performance, Lovato took a moment to set the record straight.
"When you grow up with somebody, you're always going to have love for them. But I'm not friends with her, so it felt..." Lovato confessed before she abruptly stopped herself. "I will always have love for her, and I wish everybody nothing but the best," she carefully added.
Fans were quick to try and dissect Lovato's words. Did Lovato and Gomez have a falling-out? Or is this simply a case of two people growing up... and growing apart? A source told Us Weekly that for these ladies, it's the latter. "Demi has no beef with Selena and there is no animosity between them. They're just not friends at this point," the source explained.
So, what caused this friendship to dissolve? And is there any hope for a reconciliation in the future? Keep reading to learn Trauma Therapist and Relationship Expert Audrey Hope's take on the famous former friendship.
Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato's young fame may have taken a toll
Trauma Therapist and Relationship Expert, Audrey Hope, spoke to Nicki Swift and gave her analysis on the issues that might have played a role in the dissolution of Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato's friendship. Hope first pointed out the striking similarities of Gomez and Lovato's upbringings and how that may have initially brought the two young women together. But she also noted their friendship was filled with many highs and lows as the friendship wore on, with Lovato even unfollowing Gomez on social media multiple times. Not exactly the most stable of friendships...
Hope also pointed to the pressures that come with being young and famous. "So many celebrity teens end up with addiction and mental health issues later in life as they pay the price for burying problems under the rug," she said. "You cannot mask childhood pain with fame! It is a dangerous curtain that silences the monster that lives within. Money, adoration and audiences cannot fill an empty donut hole that life puts inside of you."
Don't count this friendship out quite yet
Ultimately, Trauma Therapist and Relationship Expert Audrey Hope agrees that sometimes friends just simply grow apart. "Life is a winding road and it takes us all on a wild journey... The twists and turns of life take us on a journey to learn about ourselves and become the person we're meant to be and so we often have to leave the friends we love, those who started with us, in order to travel our own path," Hope declared to Nicki Swift.
Hope is adamant, however, that while these two have seemingly gone their separate ways both ladies have resolved to remain supportive of one another — a major key in dealing with friendships that fizzle out, celebrity or not. "Through it all, the women remain supportive and kind to each other. Selena was the first to contact Demi while in treatment. She was crying with worry and when Demi heard of Selena's illness, she complimented her on her strength. Friendships are hard whether you are a celebrity or not," Hope said.
But Hope hasn't given up on these two ladies just yet. "Demi and Selena are two women who have been through hell and back. They are heroines who live out loud and want to help others through their suffering. Women who dare to put their souls on the line are rare in Hollywood and I am sure they will find their way back to each other again," she predicted. Fingers crossed!
