The Real Reason Tom Cruise Apologized To Brooke Shields
Actor Tom Cruise hasn't always been one to keep his cool and hide his thoughts. The Mission Impossible star lashed out on the production crew on his latest film in 2020, due to reportedly some on set refusing to wear masks in the midst of a global pandemic.
Although the recording of the actor yelling at the production crew went viral, the actor has yet to apologize for his tone (which may be largely due to the large backing from fans and fellow celebs on his complaints). But back in 2006, the actor did apologize for another previous outburst of his harsh opinions, and this time, it was to Brooke Shields.
The Blue Lagoon actress revealed on The Tonight Show to then-host Jay Leno that Cruise came personally to Shields' home to give a "heartfelt apology" after he blasted her publicly.
"Through it all, I was so impressed with how heartfelt it was," said Shields (via People). "And I didn't feel at any time that I had to defend myself, nor did I feel that he was trying to convince me of anything other than the fact that he was deeply sorry. And I accepted it."
So what was the reason for the heartfelt apology? Cruise had made some harsh comments about Shields' health.
Tom Cruise called Brooke Shields 'irresponsible'
Celebrity feuds have come and gone across Hollywood, but the hasty comments between Tom Cruise and Brooke Shields in 2006 fortunately ended in an apology.
The Top Gun actor apologized to Shields personally after criticizing her the year prior for using medication for postpartum depression, according to People. In 2016, Shields told Jenny McCarthy that Cruise had called her and said, "'I'd like to have a sit-down and a talk with you.'" And that's what they did.
It all started when Cruise had told Access Hollywood, as per People, that Shields' use of antidepressants was "irresponsible" and that "when someone says (medication) has helped them, it is to cope, it didn't cure anything. There is no science. There is nothing that can cure them whatsoever."
The comments weren't so surprising, considering Cruise is a devout member of the Church of Scientology, which condemns the use of "mind-altering prescriptions," according to People. "I care about Brooke Shields because I think she is an incredibly talented women, (but) look at where has her career gone," said Cruise.
The actress didn't take too kindly to the comments prior to the apology, telling People, the actor should "stick to saving the world from aliens let women who are experiencing postpartum depression decide what treatment options are best for them." We're glad they've mended things since.
