It was love at first sight for John Krasinski and Emily Blunt
It may have taken John Krasinski's character on The Office a while to figure out his love life, but in the real world, the actor knew immediately that Emily Blunt was the one for him, and unlike the complicated world of TV plotlines, Blunt knew right away too!
A mutual friend reportedly introduced the actors in 2008. "I shook her hand and — no joke — in my head just went 'Oh no,'" Krasinski told CBS News. "I knew it immediately."
Blunt felt very much the same. "He was so funny and sweet," she said. "We talked until five in the morning that night. And that was it."
After that fateful introduction, the couple moved fast. "We were engaged within 10 months," Blunt told People magazine, "but I think we probably knew before that." In fact, Blunt told Entertainment Tonight that Krasinski "is my perfect man."
John Krasinski and Emily Blunt prioritize parenting
Part of what makes John Krasinski so perfect, according to Emily Blunt, is his parenting skills. "[He will] throw [daughter] Hazel on the back of a bike and take off somewhere and go on some crazy adventure," she told Entertainment Tonight. "He is so hands-on and so committed."
Both parents work hard to balance their busy careers with their home life, and it's clear that daughters Hazel (born in 2014) and Violet (born in 2016) are their priorities. "If we aren't working, we're at home with the kids," Krasinski told People. "We raise our kids, and we're very important and present in our kids' lives."
Part of that presence means being supportive of everything the kids do, even if they someday decide they want to follow in their parents' footsteps. "In my eyes, they'll always have the potential to do anything that they absolutely want," Krasinski told Glamour. If that happens to be acting, he's okay with that. "I truly mean when I say that I support them wholeheartedly," he said. "I just want them to understand what they're getting into."
Despite how difficult it can be to balance their professional and personal lives, Krasinski loves that Blunt is a working mother. He told People that he's "so proud to know that my daughters are going to grow up knowing that their mom is an incredibly hardworking, wonderful woman."
Some predicted this film was going to break their marriage
John Krasinski and Emily Blunt's feelings about parenthood are part of what led them to work together on his directorial project A Quiet Place. The terrifying 2018 thriller follows a family forced to live in silence as they try to survive a dystopian future where monsters with uber-sensitive hearing attack at the slightest sound. The couple plays parents Lee and Evelyn Abbott.
Krasinski is not a fan of horror movies but was drawn to the film: "The scares were secondary to how powerful this could be as an allegory or metaphor for parenthood," he told CBS News. Blunt agreed, calling her role "the most personal character" of her career. "I just fell in love with this mother, I just identified with her so much. Just the fierceness of her," she told CBS News.
It was their first time working together, and they apparently went into it understanding the risks. "We had so many people be like, 'You're gonna be divorced by the end,'" Blunt told CBS News. "Actually we were closer. It was kind of amazing,"
In fact, Krasinski said his admiration for his wife deepened during the project. "I've obviously been the biggest fan of hers forever, but to see her on set doing what she does, when you're in the room it's a whole different thing."
John Krasinski and Emily Blunt have a 'secret langague'
Working on A Quiet Place was a bonding experience for John Krasinski and Emily Blunt in more ways than one. Because their characters were forced to rely on nonverbal communication, these two also came away from the film with a deeper understanding of alternative ways to connect.
"For this movie, there's something about us being married that makes it more special," he told Extra. "Everyone talks about having a secret language with your spouse, and we only got to communicate through our secret language. Without dialogue, we got to connect."
When it comes to conversation, the pair tends to leave certain subjects off the table. Krasinski told People that on date nights they try to put parenting chatter on the backburner. "We just go to dinner and talk and have no baby talk."
There's another topic they avoid — something Krasinski says "saved their relationship." In an interview with Playboy, he recalled trying to tell Blunt how much he admired her as an actor during one of their early dates. "She went, 'No, no, no, no!' Very loud," and they didn't talk about it again, he said. As a result, "We got to have a very removed existence, because we just looked at it as though we were two people who had fallen in love, rather than two Hollywood celebrities who'd met each other."
For these two stars, the role of life partners may just be their most critically-acclaimed project of all.
