What Jennifer Lopez Told Charli D'Amelio After Her TikTok Backlash

Charli D'Amelio is a big Jennifer Lopez fan, and her dreams came true when she got to meet her idol and dance with her ahead of the 2020 Super Bowl in Lopez's Super Bowl Challenge on TikTok. "When I first met her and I got to shake her hand, I was just blank face. I didn't know what to say," the TikTok star told Entertainment Tonight in February 2020. "And then it kind of set in and tears just started rolling down my eyes because this was all I ever really really wanted to experience and it happened and it was really, really crazy," she recalled.

Since rising to the top of TikTok, meeting celebrities has become routine for D'Amelio. She has also scored deals with brands like Hollister and Morphe and even wrote her own book. However, being in the spotlight isn't easy, and D'Amelio learned that after getting scrutinized for what many deemed to be insensitive behavior on her family's first YouTube episode of Dinner With The D'Amelios. In the episode, D'Amelio expressed her disappointment with not hitting 100 million followers on Tik Tok one year after she hit one million followers, which she said would have been a super cool feat. Viewers were quick to judge her, and she lost one million followers on TikTok.

Following the scandal, D'Amelio shared that she received important advice from her idol. This is what Jennifer Lopez told Charli D'Amelio after her TikTok backlash.

Jennifer Lopez told Charli D'Amelio to always move forward

In a Zoom interview with Entertainment Tonight, Charli D'Amelio shared that she and her parents met up with Jennifer Lopez and her fiancé Alex Rodriguez, and she thought it was a planned intervention about the TikTok drama. "They were just like, 'Yeah, you just can't be caught up in what's going on that's wrong ... you really need to push forward,'" she said of Lopez and Rodriguez's advice. "After it was over I was like, 'OK, but like seriously who planned this?' Like, this could not have been a [better time].' And they were like, 'No, we just wanted you to come in and see our new offices.'"

D'Amelio added that the unexpected meeting was just what she needed to push her out of her funk. "This happened to make me get out of that, and be happy again, smile again and mean it," she explained. "Those ups are just staying for longer and that's what's so nice ... Because each of these people that I talk to, it's helping remind me who I am and why I'm here and why I do this every day. And it's just so important."

Following the drama, D'Amelio not only gained the one million lost followers back, but she also made history by becoming the first Tik Toker to reach 100 million followers.
