The Heartbreaking Princess Diana Moment You Didn't See On The Crown
It's no secret that, despite being a royal, Princess Diana endured many sad moments throughout her life. Along with experiencing a tortured childhood and giving up her career in order to take on her official duties, Diana also went through one of the most public divorces in modern memory and was betrayed in more ways than you might realize.
For those who were unaware of what was going on at the time or were too young to have lived through the drama related to the popular royal, Netflix's The Crown has revisited not only the real-life fairytale aspects of being a part of the privileged few, but also the hardships that those in the family — and the many figures surrounding them — have suffered.
However, as hard as it might be to believe considering how much viewers have seen, not everything that happened to the royals was included in the show. That includes one particularly heartbreaking moment that involved a pregnant Princess Diana.
Princess Diana allegedly threw herself down the stairs while pregnant with Prince William
One sad aspect of Princess Diana's marriage to Prince Charles was the fact that he was unfaithful. According to Radio Times, Andrew Morton's 1992 biography Diana: Her True Story details how Diana was aware of Charles' affair with Camilla Parker Bowles prior to getting married but thought that the relationship would end when she and Charles tied the knot. "I had tremendous hopes in my heart," she recalled. However, that didn't happen, and just six months into the marriage, Diana, who was pregnant with Prince William and "suffering with a difficult first pregnancy and bouts of morning sickness — attempted to die by suicide [by] throwing herself from a staircase at Sandringham," Morton claimed, according to the outlet. (But as per Diana's recollection below, it remains unclear if she attempted suicide or was "trying to get [Charles'] attention.")
Diana reportedly opened up about the heartbreaking incident, per the Daily Mail, saying, "When I was four months pregnant with William I threw myself downstairs, trying to get my husband's attention, for him to listen to me." She explained, "I had told Charles I felt so desperate and I was crying my eyes out. He said I was crying wolf. 'I'm not going to listen,' he said. 'You're always doing this to me. I'm going riding now.'" That's when Diana "threw [her]self down the stairs." She added, "The Queen comes out, absolutely horrified, shaking — she was so frightened."
While Diana said she knew she "wasn't going to lose the baby," she was "quite bruised around the stomach." When Charles returned, "it was just dismissal, total dismissal. He just carried on out of the door." So very sad.
