How Much Money Would Melania Trump Get If She Divorced Donald?
First Lady Melania Trump lives a lavish life thanks to her affluent husband, President Donald Trump. Even if the couple were to call it quits and divorce, she would still be sitting pretty. Rumor has it that Melania isn't too happy walking behind the New York native, if swatting Donald's hand away numerous times — on camera, no less — wasn't enough evidence of trouble in paradise. After 15 years of marriage and sharing their 14-year-old son, Baron, Melania might be ready for the next chapter in her life.
"Melania is counting every minute until he is out of office and she can divorce," former White House Aide Omarosa Manigault Newman said to the Daily Mail after Trump's 2020 election loss. "If Melania were to try to pull the ultimate humiliation and leave while he's in office, he would find a way to punish her."
If the pair were to go their separate ways, Jacqueline Newman, managing partner at Berkman Bottger Newman & Rodd, said the divorce could swing in Melania's favor. "Given what I've read in the tabloids, it doesn't seem as if there's going to be much question as to who the primary caretaker is," Newman said in a 2018 interview with Town & Country. "My guess is that she would get primary custodial rights and he would get access whenever he happens to be in town." What about Donald's fortune? Melania Trump can expect a big check from Donald
In the event that Melania and Donald Trump were to divorce, the former model would be set for life. According to Jacqueline Newman, based on their custodial duties, Melania would likely receive as much as $50 million. Though that sum of money is far more than the vast majority of people will ever see in their lifetimes, Newman did add a caveat. "While it's definitely a lot of money, in New York City, for what she's used to, she wouldn't be able to replicate what she has now," Newman told Town & Country. "He probably had a good sense of what kind of lifestyle they'd be living, so I would imagine the payout would be fairly generous."
The settlement would also depend on the couple's prenuptial agreement, which Melania reportedly renegotiated prior to the couple's entrance to the White House, according to Mary Jordan (via Yahoo! Finance). Jordan said that Melania pointed out that, at the time, she had been married to Donald longer than either of his two previous wives, neither of whom had to be the first lady. Part of the renegotiation also involved Barron's inheritance. "She wanted proof in writing that when it came to financial opportunities and inheritance, Barron would be treated as more of an equal to Trump's oldest three children," Jordan wrote in The Art of Her Deal.
Whether Melania stays with Donald or not, it seems like the first lady and former model will be set for life.
