Celebrities With The Most Embarrassing Parents
In the midst of a lifestyle of fame and fortune that follows stars, quite often, people forget that celebrities are people, too. They have families, and while under the beam of spotlight, those celebs have their family name at stake. Their mistakes and embarrassing moments reflect on not just themselves, but their family members as well.
For instance, when Raven-Symonè co-hosted The View in 2015, the Raven's Home star suggested she would not hire someone with a "ghetto" name. Not only did she receive flak for her comments on the daytime talk show, but her father, Christopher Pearman, did too. Pearman posted on Facebook that he didn't agree with what his daughter said but supports his daughter "Even if sometimes..........she says some dumb S#%T!" Likewise, when singer Miley Cirus rebelled against her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, and twerked during the 2013 VMA Awards, the controversy trended heavily on social media, leaving her family vulnerable at that moment.
While those celebrities have embarrassed their parents, we're going to take a look at the inverse; because when it comes to Hollywood stars, musicians, or professional athletes, just like everyday people, they too are not immune to being embarrassed by their parents.
Drew Barrymore's mother drove her to get emancipated
Drew Barrymore was born into Hollywood royalty. Nevertheless, the child star experienced the raw reality of the industry as a pre-tween with an addiction to alcohol and drugs when her mother, Jaid Barrymore, took her to Hollywood parties.
In 2001, Drew told 60 Minutes Australia, "My own mother had to kick my father out because he was a drug addict" and "you can't believe, as a kid, that your father would rather choose drugs than be a father." So after trying champagne at eight, she casually drank as a nine-year-old telling Oprah Winfrey in 1990, "Part of it was the fact that I didn't have a dad. I felt like my mom was abandoning me because she was always off at work." Jaid admitted to Winfrey she gave Drew her space and didn't question her daughter for hanging out with adults in their mid-20s. The Golden Globe-winning actor was legally emancipated from her mother at 14, writing in Wildflower, "When I turned 14 and wanted to start my life over, I wanted to do things on my own terms."
Drew was able to find a silver lining with her parents, writing in her memoir: "My mother and father were both incapable of being parents and I don't fault them for it ... the truth is they gave me a great blueprint through their behavior of what not to do with my own kids."
Lonzo Ball can't escape the embarrassment of his father's mouth
NBA star Lonzo Ball was the first in his family to make the NBA. That said, he has been overshadowed by his biggest hype man, which is his father, LaVar Ball. LaVar practically spoke his son's career into existence, but in the same breath, LaVar's mouth brought sound bites and headlines that embarrassed Lonzo along the way. To add insult to injury, during Lonzo's solo interviews, he's often asked questions about his father's comments.
The Masked Singer contestant experienced a different type of embarrassment on the Facebook Watch reality show Ball In The Family. On a season five episode in 2019, Lonzo inquired that LaVar should consider changing the Big Baller Brand name during a business meeting. Lonzo rationalized a name change could be the first step towards rebuilding trust with consumers after the brand's part-owner scandal. LaVar put Lonzo on blast, saying, "Listen to me, son. When I come up with a name, and then somebody tells me to change it. That's like me telling you to change your name. That's like people saying ... 'Hey, change Lonzo's name to Alfonso on the fact that he been damaged goods for the last two years.'"
The message was brutally embarrassing but probably not in vain as Lonzo told Big Boy TV in 2019: "Most of the stuff [LaVar] says, it be crazy, but most of the time it be true ... there's always a message behind it. And I know that."
Dina Lohan made her daughter Lindsay Lohan look silly
Mean Girls starlet Lindsay Lohan has had her share of embarrassing moments. But the apple doesn't fall far from the tree as her mother, Dina Lohan, on occasion, outdid her.
Momma Lohan made folks scratch their heads when she got into a debacle with Carvel Ice Cream in 2010. Apparently, an employee called the police on Dina because she tried to purchase a cake using a VIP card belonging to her daughter, Ali, which is a no-no, but Dina disputed Carvel telling R Online, "It's a family card, it just didn't have my name on it." Daily News ran a headline that read, "Lindsay Lohan's mother Dina accused of abusing free ice cream privileges by Carvel, police mediate."
Dina almost became the butt of the jokes on season two of Celebrity Big Brother in 2019. There, the contestant gushed about being in a "serious" relationship the past five years and planned on marrying a guy, whom she never met in person or, at the least, video chatted with. Singer Kandi Burruss and reality star Tamar Braxton said the situation sounded like Dina was getting catfished. "It's real," Dina pleaded, "some guys don't just use iPhones." According to Page Six, Dina's mystery man was identified as Jesse Nadler, who told the outlet he mailed an engagement ring to Dina in 2020. While the relationship oddly turned out to be real, Dina's dating situation was very sketchy and could have easily misfired.
LeBron James and his mother's rumored flings
When LeBron "King" James received his first of four NBA MVP honors in 2009, he thanked his mother, Gloria Marie James, for raising him as a single mother in Akron, Ohio. Soon after, Gloria embarrassed the 16-time NBA All-Star with her rumored flings in the news.
According to Bleacher Report, Gloria was dating LeBron's then-teammate Delonte West in 2010. The outlet theorized the alleged relationship presented a distraction that led to LeBron's poor performance, which resulted in an early playoff exit for the Cavaliers in the summer of 2010. Former Houston Rocket Calvin Murphy told ESPN 97.5, "It ain't no rumor. Unfortunately, my sources ... tell me that it is absolutely true. My sources, and they legit, tell me that it was. The only people that didn't know what was happening was LeBron and me." In 2013, Gloria was reportedly engaged to rapper Da Real Lambo who was only three years apart from LeBron. After their breakup, the Miami-based rapper made threats on social media that he planned to write a tell-all book accusing LeBron of cheating on his wife by sleeping with Beyoncé and having a secret child with news anchor Sharon Reed.
The accusations sure seemed like the heartbroken rapper was grasping at straws, nonetheless, a predicament that could have been avoided had Gloria not been dating a peer of LeBron or, at the least, dated someone more mature to save her son the embarrassment.
Khloé Kardashian did not want to hear about her mom's sex life
Reality star Kris Jenner has embarrassed her six children numerous times. There was even a moment where reality star Khloé Kardashian claimed her mom crossed the line when discussing her sex life.
During a lunch date on season 19 of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, the Khloé & Lamar star dished to the cameras, "I love our dynamic with our mom, and I would not change it for the world. But, does my mom overshare? I mean, she's talking about her lipstick being smeared, her mojo — just, some things, zip it." The lunch date between Kris, Kendall Jenner, and Kardashian was filled with Kris talking about her boyfriend Corey Gamble and how they had a "makeout session" in the car beforehand. Kris went into TMI mode, saying Gamble couldn't join their rendezvous because they were "up all night" and he needed to catch up on sleep. Kardashian tried to get her mom to stop talking dirty at the table, but Kris continued to moan after every bite of her dessert and continually yelled "sex" until the cooks overheard and Kardashian put her head down in shame.
This goes to show that no matter how wealthy a family is, a daughter can never escape feeling embarrassed by her mother in public.
Even Kate Hudson was embarrassed by her 'cool' mom
Actresses Kate Hudson and Goldie Hawn have one of the closest Hollywood daughter-mother bonds. That said, Hawn is no stranger to embarrassing her daughter.
Rumors circulated Hudson and musician Nick Jonas hooked up in 2015. That year, Hudson dished on Watch What Happens Live, "I don't like addressing any kind of gossip." Two years later, a caller inquired about the Jonas and Hudson goss on Watch What Happens Live again, and Hawn served her daughter on the platter, saying, "As long as the kids are having fun, I don't care; because he's a very nice guy, he's a good person." As Hawn added, she would have even cooked dinner for the former boyband member "if [the relationship] lasted long enough."
That wasn't the only time Hawn embarrassed Hudson. In 2017, the Academy Award-nominee went on Jimmy Kimmel Live and shared a story when her mom crashed her house party when she was a teen. Hudson thought her parents were out of town, and 50 of her friends showed up. "All of a sudden the door flings open, and it's my mother ... everything just stopped and she was in a negligee," Hudson laughed before adding, Hawn looked around the room, dimmed the lights, and said, "Kids, lighting is everything." Hudson said her mother left the house and her friends said, "Your mom is so cool," but "Ollie and I were literally like 'no. It's going to be so bad in the morning.'"
Rumer Willis resented the attention surrounding her mother's marriage to Ashton Kutcher
Rumer Willis, the daughter of Hollywood actors Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, told Red Table Talk in 2019 that she was embarrassed by her mother's relationship with Ashton Kutcher. More specifically, Moore's well-publicized attempts to have a baby with the That '70s Show star.
"So much of that time, especially with Ashton, I was so angry because I felt like something that was mine had been taken away," Rumer said at the table, adding, "When she wanted to have another baby ... and then it wasn't happening and then there was so much focus on that. It was like, 'Oh, we're not enough.'" The Empire actress said that was the reason she moved out of Moore's house and her co-dependency on her then-absent mother turned into alcohol addiction. Rumer said she once viewed her mother as "infallible" and one to always make her family a top priority; however, the Broadway thespian explained things changed during the Kutcher saga, saying, "[To] not be in control around a man, like who is this person? I don't know who this is?" The embarrassment did not stop there, Rumer had to check her mother into rehab for substance abuse.
With Kutcher and Moore's high-profile relationship constantly hitting the tabloids and Moore rehashing the relationship in her memoir Inside Out, did that throw more salt on the wound for Rumer?
Jaden Smith was embarrassed by his loving parents
Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith raised their kids Jaden and Willow Smith in the spotlight. However, Jaden proved that having a celebrity power couple as parents, who have given their children a foot-in-the-door in Hollywood and a $42 million mansion in Calabasas, CA. to call home, can still feel embarrassed by their parents.
In 2010, an adolescent Jaden told the Oprah Winfrey Show, "My parents embarrass me all the time. When I'm at school sometimes, my dad will just pull his pants down." On The Ellen Show in 2013, Will couldn't stop publicly expressing his love for his son Jaden, which only embarrassed the teenager when the whole world saw his father hug and kiss him on Ellen DeGeneres' guest chair. Afterward, The Karate Kid star told DeGeneres, "I'm really happy that I have such a loving father ... but there's a time and place for everything that happens." In that interview, Jaden joked about getting emancipated; however, in 2015, he legally asked to get his emancipation. On Red Table Talk, Jada recalled Jaden saying, "Mom, I have to leave here to live my life." Jaden didn't go through with it, so perhaps he realized he took his parents for granted.
In 2018, the Big Boy TV host told Jaden, "Some of us, we don't even know our dads — take that as a blessing," and asked, "Have you met my dad before?" Jaden said, "No," and Big Boy replied, "Neither have I."
Selena Gomez unfollowed her mother on Instagram
Songstress Selena Gomez fired her momager Mandy Teefy in 2014. Gomez and Teefy fell out again in 2017 when they unfollowed each other on Instagram, and according to Marie Claire, Teefy disapproved of the "Boyfriend" singer and Justin Bieber adding another chapter to their "on-again, off-again" relationship.
Teefy "had a breakdown and checked herself into a hospital," a source told ET that year, adding, "The breakdown last week was likely the result of a culmination of stress of the holidays, the anniversary of her miscarriage ... and the stress of Justin and Selena getting serious." OK! circulated a rumor that Gomez was living with Teefy and broke curfew to see Bieber, and In Touch reported Teefy allegedly demanded Gomez to take a breathalyzer test — yet Teefy told Gossip Cop both stories were false. After that fiasco, Teefy publicly shamed Gomez on Instagram in 2018 for working with Woody Allen on A Rainy Day in New York writing (via BuzzFeed News), "I had a long talk with her about not working with him," and, "no matter how hard you try to advise. It falls on deaf ears."
Perhaps the former Disney starlet was tired of seeing her mother openly comment on her decisions. In any case, the two made amends by 2020 and refollowed each other on Instagram. Gomez even wished Teefy a Happy Mother's Day, captioning an Instagram photo of the two: "I love this woman more than anyone could ever know.. happy mommas day!"
Floyd Mayweather Jr. feuded with his father
Boxer Floyd "Money" Mayweather Jr. publicly feuded with his father. The former Dancing with the Stars contestant told Independent in 2007, "I had a father who was a hustler and a mother who was on drugs." In 1992, Floyd Mayweather Sr. was convicted for drug trafficking and served five years in prison. "I was the man in the house from [age] 16," Floyd Jr. told the outlet.
Through the Mayweather installments on HBO's 24/7 sports docu-series, the father-son relationship was exploited. De La Hoya/Mayweather 24/7 introduced the feud when the former WBO Welterweight titleholder chose his uncle Roger Mayweather to continue training him over his father's attempt to reconvene. Floyd Sr. recalled the conversation: "He said, 'My loyalty is in Roger' ... I'm your damn Daddy, man." On Mayweather/Ortiz 24/7, the father-and-son duo had a heated exchange that nearly turned into a brawl at the TMT Mayweather Boxing Club. In 2017, Floyd Sr. told iFL TV the beef boiled down to one thing, saying, "People get money man, things change. I don't care whether it's your father, mother, whoever."
However, during De La Hoya/Mayweather 24/7 episode, the sports star revealed that his relationship with his dad is publicly misconstrued, explaining, "People think that I hate my father just because we don't see eye-to-eye. I love my dad ... But my dad wants to come and control everything ... and that's where we fell out."
Zoë Kravitz was embarrassed by her father's clothes
Zoë Kravitz grew up as the daughter of four-time Grammy Award-winning musician Lenny Kravitz and Emmy Award-nominated actress Lisa Bonet. In 2020, the High Fidelity star told The Ellen Show that as a kid, she thought her father's attire was typical until she started school and "looked at other people's dad's and looked at [her] dad."
In 2018, the X-Men: First Class starlet told Rolling Stone, "[Lenny would] pick me up, and the entire school would flock to the parking lot. And he wasn't being subtle: He'd show up in a sports car and leather pants and a netted shirt. Like, 'Dude, can you just be low-key a little bit?'" Zoë jokingly added, "Just a shirt that I can't see your nipples through would be so dope." As Zoë got older, she developed a true appreciation for her parents' fashion, telling Grazia in 2017, "I love that they didn't feel like they had to dress a certain way because they were parents." She added, "As a child, I guess you don't have that mind-set yet, so I was sometimes embarrassed by their bold statements."
Now that Zoë has acquired her parents' taste in fashion, she has taken some of her father's clothes, but when it comes to her mother, she told the outlet, "I can't really steal anything from her, because she's on it! She does let me raid her wardrobe sometimes and borrow things, though."
