Sketchy Things About Kristen Stewart That Everyone Ignores
Kristen Stewart is a celebrated actress and fashion icon. She's also rather problematic, based on the many headline-making scandals that have plagued her personal and professional life. Here are just a few of the ways Stewart might be sketchier than some people realize.
She's blamed her 'bad acting' on her costars
Stewart has been criticized by some moviegoers for, in their opinion, her compulsive lip-biting and lack of other emoting in movies, but according to her, that stuff is the fault of other actors. She told Vanity Fair France: "I'm not the type of actor who can perform without wearing a mirror on my face. Everyone knows that you're better with other actors who are really present, who you are having the same experience with, but I am made or broken on it. If I'm working with someone who I'm not vibing with, or who I have to fake anything with, then it's sad for me and it's bad acting" (via Entertainment Tonight). Wait, what?
She's dissed her colleagues
After Stewart and Rupert Sanders' hookup made headlines, neither she nor Sanders were featured in the sequel to Snow White and the Huntsman (2012), The Huntsman: Winter's War (2016). Stewart could have refrained from commenting about the movie, which was panned by critics and bombed at the box office, but instead, she gloated to Variety about the film's failure. "I read a few scripts. None of them were good. None of them were greenlight-able. And I had a meeting with Universal about the places where the story could go. Maybe Chris [Hemsworth] was more into it. I actually don't f***ing know," she said. "It wasn't a situation where I got kicked off a movie because I got in trouble. We had been in talks months after that about making something work, and it never came together."
She added that she found out about Winter's War from a press release. "I was like, 'OK, cool.' We hadn't spoken in a long time, but I didn't know we had broken up." When offered a cameo as Snow White, she smirked and said: "I might just leave that be. I was really into that, but...Now I'm like...' Thank God.'"
She said that Hollywood is sexist
Kristen Stewart ranted to Harper's Bazaar UK about how sexist Hollywood can be. "Hollywood is so disgustingly sexist...It's so offensive it's crazy," she said. "Women inevitably have to work harder to be heard." She added, "I just even question when a fairly established actress finally does a scene on a movie when she shows her boobs and she hasn't done it up until this moment, and maybe she only did it for the prestigious part, and it's OK for this time because it's classy, and I'm like, 'Oh, God, thank you for revealing to the world your treasure.'"
But she worked with a director accused of sexual assault
For all of Stewart's rants about sexism, her more feminist-leaning critics (including Ronan Farrow) have pointed out that she doesn't always put her money where her mouth is, especially in terms of working with director Woody Allen. Allen was famously accused of sexually assaulting his stepdaughter, Dylan Farrow, and married his ex Mia Farrow's adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn.
Stewart explained her choice to work with Allen on Cafe Society (2016) to Variety. "We don't know any of these people involved. I can personalize situations, which would be very wrong...If we were persecuted for the amount of s**t that's been said about us that's not true, our lives would be over," she said. "The experience of making the movie was so outside of that, it was fruitful for [Jesse Eisenberg and me] to go on with it."
She's been criticized for comments she made about gender equality
When Variety asked Stewart about the gender pay gap in Hollywood, her response was viewed by some as glib. "Instead of sitting around and complaining about that, do something. Go write something, go do something," she said. "And that's easy to say. Like, f**k, it's hard to get movies made. It's a huge luxury. Who gets to just make movies? But that subject is just so prevalently everywhere right now, and it's boring." Thanks for the advice, K-Stew!
She was once admonished for comparing the paparazzi's aggressive behavior to rape
Stewart has compared being photographed by paparazzi to being sexually assaulted. "What you don't see are the cameras shoved in my face and the bizarre intrusive questions being asked, or the people falling over themselves, screaming and taunting to get a reaction," she told Elle UK. "The photos are so...I feel like I'm looking at someone being raped.".
When sexual assault advocacy groups called her out shortly thereafter, she was quick to backpedal on her comments, telling People in a statement: "I really made a huge mistake—clearly and obviously, and I'm really sorry about my choice of words...'Violated' definitely would have been a better way of expressing the thought." She added: "People thinking that I'm insensitive about the subject rips my guts out. I made a big mistake."
She said she'd never do a makeup campaign (and then did a makeup campaign)
In September 2012, Stewart spoke to Glamour Germany (via Evil Beet Gossip) about her distaste for things like high-profile celebrity makeup campaigns. "I would never work with people who aren't really creative and aren't committed to what they do," she said. "Unfortunately, there are a lot of those people out there, they are f**king everywhere, and they try to suck the soul out of you. For example, I would never do a makeup campaign, even though the [final] photos with me would probably look good. Thank you, but it doesn't interest me."
For the record, Stewart was named the face of Chanel makeup in February 2016. Oh, and by the way: the final photos did look good.
She allegedly cheated on Michael Angarano with Robert Pattinson
Yahoo! Celebrity reports that Stewart allegedly got very close with Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson on and off set while she was still dating longtime boyfriend Michael Angarano. Stewart laughed off rumors of an off-screen romance with Pattinson at first, but spies soon caught the real-life Bella and Edward holding hands. Although Angarano and Stewart were photographed together amid the scandal, their relationship eventually fell apart, reported Yahoo! Celebrity. And, well, the rest is history.
She cheated on Robert Pattinson with Rupert Sanders
In July 2012, Stewart got caught cheating on Pattinson with her married Snow White and the Huntsman director, Rupert Sanders. After Us Weekly broke the story, Stewart issued a shocking statement to People magazine in which she owned up to her actions, saying, "I'm deeply sorry for the hurt and embarrassment I've caused to those close to me and everyone this has affected. This momentary indiscretion has jeopardized the most important thing in my life, the person I love and respect the most, Rob. I love him, I love him, I'm so sorry."
Sanders released his own statement on the scandal, saying: "I am utterly distraught about the pain I have caused my family. My beautiful wife and heavenly children are all I have in this world. I love them with all my heart. I am praying that we can get through this together."
Sanders and Ross have since divorced; she later married record executive Jimmy Iovine. Stewart and Pattinson tried to stick it out but split for good in May 2013. At the time of this writing, he's reportedly engaged to singer FKA Twigs, while Stewart is supposedly dating Alicia Cargile.
She allegedly cheated on Alicia Cargile with Soko (and vice versa)
When Stewart gushed about Cargile to Elle UK in July 2016, she admitted one very interesting fact. "We've broken up a couple of times and gotten back together," she said. Those breakups were possibly the result of Stewart's alleged tendency for overlapping affections. Stewart was rumored to have hooked up with French singer Stephanie "Soko" Sokolinski before dumping Cargile, and Sokolinski once hinted that Stewart cheated on her with Cargile. Did we mention that all three ladies attended the Cannes Film Festival in May 2016? Drama!
She may have cheated on Alicia Cargile with St. Vincent
Lainey Gossip reports that Kristen Stewart and Alicia Cargile were still together in August 2016 when Stewart was first spotted hanging out with singer Annie "St. Vincent" Clark. Regardless of the timeline specifics, at the time of this writing, Stewart and Clark are officially an item, according to Us Weekly. "It's been very romantic," a source said. "Kristen is always whispering in [Clark's] ear and asking her opinion." The source claims the pair are inseparable, but fans hoping for a wedding may want to hold off for now. The reason: Clark is still fresh from her split with longtime girlfriend Cara Delevingne.
