Why Jennifer Lopez's AMAs Performance Caused A Stir

Jennifer Lopez is a singing, dancing and acting icon. From starring in critically-acclaimed films like Selena and Hustlers to taking over the charts with hits like "Jenny from the Block" and "On the Floor," she's seemingly done just about everything. That being said, for better or worse, J.Lo has sent headlines swirling for decades.

Before the 2020 American Music Awards aired in November 2020, she reportedly caused some concern among the show's production team because they were worried that her set with Colombian singer Maluma would be too provocative. The concern followed mass criticism for her 2020 Super Bowl Halftime Show performance with Shakira, which reportedly resulted in more than 1,300 complaints being sent to the Federal Communications Commission because many deemed it inappropriate for a family show, per NBC.

Lopez's performance of "Pa' Ti" and "Lonely" at the AMAs came and went, and, overall, people didn't seem to be super concerned about her revealing bodysuit or her dance moves. Instead, she had the internet up in arms for other reasons. Here's why Jennifer Lopez's AMAs performance caused a stir.

Viewers said Jennifer Lopez's AMAs performance was unoriginal

Twitter had a lot to say about Jennifer Lopez's 2020 American Music Awards performance. While many of her loyal supporters were head over heels for her performance and likened her to a "Puerto Rican Goddess," some viewers were less pleased. People were fuming on Twitter, accusing the "Ain't Your Momma" singer of stealing Beyoncé's look from her 2014 "Drunk in Love" Grammys performance. Both singers wore a black bodysuit with sheer cutouts and had their hair styled to look wet.

"She totally copied Beyonce look but people aren't ready for that convo," one user wrote. However, people were apparently more than happy to have that conversation because tweets flooded Twitter regarding Lopez's outfit choice. "jlo's hair and outfit... ur not beyonce," another user slammed. People weren't just mad about Lopez's outfit, though. They even accused her of lip syncing. "JLo and Maluma not even hiding the lip syncing," an unhappy viewer tweeted. Another person even called Lopez the "queen of lip syncing." Ouch.

The Wedding Planner star responded to fans' criticism of her Super Bowl Halftime Show performance, so only time will tell if she feels the need to defend herself again.
