Inside Adam Lambert's Low-Key Love Life
Adam Lambert has been in our lives since 2009, when he lost Season 8 of American Idol in an earth-shattering upset to Kris Allen. Nonetheless, the rock-and-roller was able to land on his feet, churning out hits as a solo performer, and then later being named the frontman of legendary rock band Queen. And yet, despite his meteoric rise, Lambert has managed to stay somewhat low-key. Over the years, he's opened up about his childhood, his musical journey, and his sexuality, however, when it comes to his love life, the superstar has kept most details to himself.
The few relationships Lambert has shared with the public have been somewhat short-lived. While the "Whataya Want From Me" singer hasn't been lucky in love (yet), he admitted to the The Sydney Morning Herald in May 2020 that "deep down" he is "a romantic." At the time of the interview, marriage and children were off the table for the singer, but he is definitely on the market for someone with whom he can share his extraordinary life.
As we wait for Lambert to find Mr. Right, let's take a look at some of his past relationships.
When Adam met Javi
Celebrities, they're just like us. Though Adam Lambert is world renown, with access and opportunity to meet just about anyone in real life, the singer met his most recent beau via Instagram.
Back in March 2019, the Queen frontman sent his fandom into a frenzy when he made it Instagram official with Spanish model Javi Costa Polo. The singer was the first to post a photo with his boyfriend, simply captioned: "LUV U @javicostapolo." The model then returned the favor with his own snap of the pair, captioned with lyrics from one of Adam's most popular songs, "If I Had You."
A few months later, while promoting a new album on RuPaul, Lambert gushed about his love, revealing how the pair actually "met on Instagram." He continued, "We were texting for a while, then we went on a proper date and it was lovely. It was just a good vibe right from jump and it felt instant!" As for whether or not he felt nervous that Javi might be a creep, Adam said, "I think after this much time I'm a pretty good judge of character. I mean, every once and awhile I screw up, but I'm cautious."
Distance didn't make Adam Lamber's heart grow fonder
The fact that Adam Lambert and Javi Costa Polo already had demanding schedules was only exacerbated by the fact that they also had to live in two different countries. The distance, and other factors, eventually proved too much and they split just a few months after they started dating. In a video addressing their break-up, Costa Polo explained that because he wasn't a citizen of the U.S., he couldn't make a proper living for himself and was essentially forced to go back to Spain.
Although Lambert has remained fairly mum on their breakup, Costa Polo made it clear that the whole thing was amicable. "Adam and I are no longer together which breaks my heart because I love Adam the most. He's literally been the most amazing person I have ever met in my entire life and the good thing is I will always have him, and he will always have me." He continued, "We both decided that the best thing for me in order keep growing ... and keep learning — in order to be the person that I want to be, I need to be in a country that gives me the right to be that."
Need more proof that these two ended on good terms? Metal Head Zone reported that Adam provided the ultimate millennial seal of a clean break when he issued a swift thumbs up on a photo of Javi and his new boyfriend.
Adam Lambert makes a connection with Sauli Koskinen
Prior to blasting his love for Javi Costa Polo all over Instagram, Adam Lambert got pretty serious with Sauli Koskinen, a former Finnish Big Brother star and entertainment reporter. This was Lambert's only public relationship prior to Costa Polo, and although it's not clear when or how he met Koskinen, we do know they went strong for several years. Dating from 2011 and 2013, the pair was spotted on red carpets, on casual trips to the grocery store, and low-key date nights. Nonetheless, they couldn't sustain the relationship and called it quits after it had been "kind of on its way out in the last couple of months," as Lambert told South Florida Gay News (via HUFFPOST).
As with his relationship with Costa Polo, Lambert insisted that there was no drama or lingering bad blood between him and Koskinen. "Sauli and I remain really good friends, and I know it's a cliché thing to say. But it's totally true," Lambert stated, adding, "I've been getting really busy and traveling a lot and he's been getting really busy because he has a show he's filming for Finnish television. So we just decided to part ways."
Love is 'not always easy' for Adam Lambert
Perhaps a sign that Adam Lambert's relationship with Sauli Koskinen would fatefully come to an end revealed itself right at the beginning. The pair was arrested after getting into a fight outside a gay bar in Helsinki in 2011. Lambert was visiting his beau in Finland for Christmas when things got a wee bit out of control around 4 a.m. on Dec. 22. They pair got into "a brawl" according to The Hollywood Reporter, and Lambert did a small stint in jail after authorities were called.
It turned out the fight had merely been a small lovers' spat as both stars took to social media to let fans know that all was well. At the time, Sauli wrote on his blog (via THR), "Celebrities are people too and fame is not easy. Love is not always easy either, but it's forever."
Lambert later tweeted, "Jetlag+Vodka=blackout. Us÷blackout=irrational confusion. jail+guilt+press=lesson learned. Sauli+Adam+hangover burgers = laughing bout it."
Adam Lambert and Sam Smith: BFFs or something more?
Adam Lambert and Sam Smith: are they or aren't they? The rumors started in 2016, when the singers were often spotted together, however, Lambert didn't take long to shut that right down. "I love that rumor, actually. The minute I heard it, I texted him and said, 'So?'" Lambert said on Watch What Happens Live," in 2017, adding, "He's such a nice guy, he's so funny, but no." Lambert did admit that the friends have done "a lot of bonding," dishing that he and Smith "did ride a rickshaw in London from one club to another, wasted, at like 3 in the morning."
That bond was tested after Smith caught flack for seemingly throwing shade at Michael Jackson. In a since-deleted Instagram post by Lambert, an inebriated Smith was heard saying, "I don't like Michael Jackson, but ['Human Nature'] is a good song." Naturally, the internet melted down, but Lambert was quick to explain.
Speaking with People, Lambert said that after a day boating and champagne, all he wanted to do was "post a picture of [his] new Gucci sunglasses." Instead, he posted a video of himself in the shades that included Smith's comment, which "[didn't] sound right out of context," as "it was a sliver of a fuller conversation that was actually quite interesting." Lambert of course extended an apology to the British crooner and their friendship is just fine.
