Former Republican Jennifer Lawrence Gives 2020 Endorsement
Actress Jennifer Lawrence has never been afraid to speak her mind, and now she is opening up about her political views. Lawrence told the Absolutely Not podcast (via Page Six) that she has made quite the political transformation over the last few years. "I grew up Republican. My first time voting, I voted for John McCain," Lawrence recalled, while discussing the 2008 presidential election. After describing herself as a "little Republican," Lawrence explained her political evolution. She was fond of "the fiscal benefits of some of the Republican policies," but discovered the conservative party's social policies didn't agree with her views.
Lawrence pointed to President Donald Trump, who is decidedly unpopular in Hollywood, as being the determining factor in switching her political alignment. "This is an impeached president who's broken many laws, and has refused to condemn white supremacy, and it feels like there has been a line drawn in the sand," the Hunger Games star said. "I don't think it's right ... it just changes things for me." Trump had previously been under fire for not explicitly condemning white supremacy during the first presidential debate and telling the far-right group Proud Boys to "stand back and stand by." However, he did condemn both two days later in an interview with Fox News (per NY Post).
It is no surprise then, that Lawrence will be taking the Democratic route in the upcoming presidential election. Here's what former Republican Jennifer Lawrence said in her 2020 endorsement.
Jennifer Lawrence endorsed Joe Biden and Kamala Harris
Jennifer Lawrence officially endorsed Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden in a statement in V Magazine in October 2020. "Voting is the foundation of our democracy and our freedom. And I would consider this upcoming election the most consequential of our lifetime," she stated. "I'm voting for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris this year because Donald Trump has and will continue to put himself before the safety and well-being of America. He does not represent my values as an American, and most importantly as a human being," the Oscar-winning actress continued.
In the article, Lawrence noted her involvement with a nonpartisan group called Represent Us, which helps tackle America's "broken political system," and focuses on giving power back to the American people. "The hope is to make Americans aware of the corruption in our government, so we can vote it out," Lawrence asserted. She added that, at the time of the interview, Represent Us had passed 114 anti-corruption acts across America.
Lawrence also addressed the current political and social climate in America, and offered a line of hope. "The bad news can feel overwhelming at times," she said, "but the most important thing is to stay focused on the ways we can all be a part of the solution." Thankfully, our right to vote can influence just that.
