Why Armando's Mom Is Concerned About His Wedding On 90 Day Fiance
Weddings and family affairs can be synonymous with drama, a sentiment that's true more often than not for the stars of 90 Day Fiancé. Unfortunately, this is the case for Season 2 90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way cast members Armando Rubio and Kenneth Niedermeier. The couple, who met in a support group on social media for gay fathers, has struggled to get the approval of Armando's traditional Mexican family, as same-sex marriage is not widely accepted in their culture. "People in Mexico are still very homophobic. You just don't know when someone could hurt you, and I'm afraid that we might get hurt," per E! Online.
Despite this obstacle, the fan favorites — who share a 26-year age gap — are deeply committed to one another. Kenneth even relocated from Florida to Mexico so that Armando can stay with his young daughter in their native country. After just one week of living together, the couple got engaged. While Armando's mother, Virginia, knows nothing can get between these two, during an Oct. 18, 2020, episode of the show, she discouraged her son from having a wedding, per Reality Tea.

Inside Armando's emotional talk with his mom
During an intense conversation between Armando and Virginia, the mom admitted she was disappointed her son didn't tell her about his engagement in private. "Her telling me that she would have preferred I told her in private shows me that she's still struggling with it. I think in some ways maybe she feels embarrassed that I'm gay," Armando said in a confessional interview, according to People. "She needs to learn how to accept me without worrying what anybody says, thinks, or who is around."
As Armando went on to discuss his wedding plans, his mother discouraged him from having a lavish wedding and asked why he couldn't just go to the city hall instead. "We want to celebrate it," he responded. "Like any other couple when they love each other and they get married, it's a very important day." Seemingly fearful that people won't attend her son's wedding, Armando insisted that the guest he cares most about is his mother. Although Virginia said she would go, she can't promise the same for his father, who is struggling to accept his son's sexuality.
After Virginia discouraged her son from throwing a wedding, the family shared an emotional goodbye. Of course, many fans are hopeful Armando's parents will love him for who he is, but that's a work in progress at this point.
