Hugh Jackman's Wife Reveals The Truth About The Gay Rumors
Hugh Jackman and wife Deborra-Lee Furness met in 1995 on the set of the Australian TV show Correlli, according to the Daily Mail, and they've been together ever since, celebrating more than two decades of love and marriage. But being married to a Hollywood star also means having to endure the endless (and often nasty) rumors that circulate. For Jackman and Furness, that means constantly battling accusations that the actor is actually gay. Furness appeared on Anh's Brush With Fame on Sept. 29, 2020 and these rumors came up, along with other hurtful comments.
"Do you get sick of being told you're lucky to be married to Hugh?" Anh Do, interviewer and artist, asked Furness. "Lucky?" Furness laughed, "Like I won a chook raffle. People don't realize that it's actually rude to say that. But yeah, the 'lucky' because he's the stud-muffin and that's just show-biz and Hollywood and the brand of Hugh Jackman," (via the Daily Mail.) Furness was equally candid about the gay comments circulating around Jackman. Here's what she had to say.
Deborra-Lee Furness said rumors can be 'mean-spirited'
Deborra-Lee Furness spoke with interviewer Anh Do on Anh's Brush With Fame and addressed comments that her husband Hugh Jackman is gay. "It's just wrong," Furness said. "It's like someone saying to Elton John, 'he's straight.' I'm sure he'd be p*ssed! He's not straight," (via the Daily Mail.)
But Furness went on to talk about the deeper emotional hurt that can come from rumors. "What I don't like... I see these magazines and they're so mean-spirited... I hope people don't buy these magazines and realize it's all made up," she said.
Jackman himself addressed these rumors in 2013 during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Jackman mentioned that they bother his wife more than him. He said of Furness: "She goes: 'It's big. It's everywhere!'" Jackman also discussed this topic during a radio interview, per Metro, in 2018. The actor said the rumors started circulating when he starred in the musical The Boy from Oz, where he played a gay musician in 2003. Speaking about his on-stage kiss, Jackman said: "I was literally just locking lips... I started to laugh so hard."
"So I stay kissing him, because I thought, 'I'm just going to laugh. I'm going to stay here until it subsides' and it never subsided and the whole audience could see my body shaking, so they started," Jackman said (via Metro.) Well, that helps to explain the origin of the rumors, but it doesn't necessarily make it easier for Furness to deal with online speculations.
