The Paisleys came up with a plan for a free grocery store in 2018 after visiting Unity Shoppe in Santa Barbara, so they partnered with local businesses to make their dream into a reality. Brad explained how the idea for The Store was born: "We took our boys to Unity Shoppe to teach them about serving others and giving back to people in need," he said. "And we came away surprised by what the organization had taught us. Most people don't want handouts. They want dignity and respect. Most people want to become self-sufficient."
When The Store broke ground in 2019, the couple even received a shout-out from President Obama on Twitter: "Here's a story about people doing good that's worth sharing: [Brad Paisley] and his wife [Kimberly Williams-Paisley] saw food insecurity in Nashville and decided to do something about it.
