The Sad Reason Carole Baskin Wasn't Allowed To Dance Growing Up
Carole Baskin became a household name thanks to the Netflix docuseries, Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness, which became a global sensation after its release on March 20, 2020. Baskin became an unwitting villain, after some fans speculated that she killed her husband and fed him to her tigers. Please note: Baskin has been charged with no such thing, but that hasn't stopped lots of people from talking about it.
Despite these rumors, Baskin has joined up with another TV show, but this time with fewer murder speculations (hopefully) and more swagger. She made her debut on Dancing with the Stars on on Sept. 14, 2020. According to Entertainment Tonight, Baskin's intention in joining DWTS was solely to bring awareness to her animal sanctuary in Florida. She said dancing on a stage with millions of viewers is "just totally outside" of her comfort zone.
Baskin and her professional dance partner, Pasha Pashkov, have survived so far on the season, but they placed last two weeks in a row. While Baskin seems to remain upbeat, she admitted to the outlet that she has no history in dance. In fact, she wasn't even allowed to dance as a child. Here's why.
Carole Baskin was taught that dancing was 'a sin'
Following her abysmal scores on Dancing with the Stars, Carole Baskin spoke to Entertainment Tonight about her struggles with dancing. "I have the furthest to go. I have to try harder than anybody else," she said.
Baskin explained that she had a strict childhood: "I went to a Christian school, so at home I couldn't dance, at school I couldn't dance. [There] was no part of my life when I was allowed to dance." She added, "I was taught that it was a sin, so it was something where I tried to resist it in every way."
This religiosity infused many decisions Baskin made throughout her life. In a YouTube video she shared in March 2020, Baskin said she "didn't love" her first husband, Michael Murdock, but married him to "please my parents," who were supposedly upset that she had been living with him outside of marriage.
Baskin may not possess the experience and talent of some of her competitors, but perhaps DWTS will at least give her a way to confront her past and reassert her independence.
