Stars Who Can't Stand Carrie Underwood

Country music star Carrie Underwood has proven time and again that she's a bombshell who slays at everything. She's a singer first and foremost, made famous from her 2005 "American Idol" victory, but she's also a producer, actor, and author.

According to her official website, her book, "Find Your Path," made her a New York Times bestselling author thanks to its body-positive approach to getting strong and healthy. Also, she offers workout programs for her fans. (Have you seen her killer legs? Muscle for days.) So, it legit seems like Underwood excels at everything! But being a public figure means Underwood also deals with negativity, and, unfortunately, the star has found herself in the middle of multiple feuds with fellow celebrities. One spat involves an ex-boyfriend, while another supposed drama involves people Underwood teased during an award ceremony. Then there are the people who seem to dislike the mom-of-two outright.

Curious to see who supposedly isn't a fan of Underwood? Here's a rundown of the drama.

Did Demi Lovato shade Carrie Underwood's talent?

Although there are plenty of stars who can't stand Demi Lovato, during her time as an "X Factor" judge, she seemingly dissed Carrie Underwood's singing ability. The drama all went down in 2013 when contestant Rachel Potter sang the song "Alone." When asked why she chose that tune, she explained that Underwood had performed the same "Heart" number on "American Idol." In response to this, Lovato said, "No, you would do better than Carrie Underwood" (via Taste of Country).

Underwood's fans weren't having any of it and several jumped online to stand up for Underwood after feeling that Lovato's comment was a slight against the country music star. One person posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, "Hey Demi, Carrie Underwood would wipe the floor with every person on this show. Check yourself before you wreck yourself. #XFactor." Another person questioned, "Who is Demi to say anything about Carrie. I'd suggest she concentrate on her own career which isn't exactly steller." Ouch!

However, by 2016, this supposed beef appeared to simmer down. "I've always wanted to sing with Demi Lovato!" Underwood tweeted to Brad Paisley, who collaborated with Lovato on "Without a Fight." "Then you gotta join us cause I've always wanted to sing with YOU too!!" Lovato replied.

Carrie Underwood had beef with Tony Romo

Carrie Underwood dated NFL player Tony Romo for a brief time back in 2007. So, when her song "Cowboy Casanova" came out, audiences were curious if the tune was secretly about Romo. But in a 2009 interview with Esquire, Underwood was clear her track was not for Romo. "I would never immortalize a guy that did me wrong. I would never give him that much credit," she told the outlet.

Following their split, Romo began dating Jessica Simpson, so things got a bit heated when Underwood claimed in the September 2008 issue of Allure that Romo called her a few times post-split. Underwood said, "I don't know. The phone will ring and it'll be him, and I'll maybe not answer."

However, Simpson spoke up and denied Underwood's claim that Romo was calling his ex. She said on the Nashville radio show, "The Woody and Jim Show" (via Today)"Tony and I both laughed at that. Yeah, we got a chuckle out of it." Simpson added that she checked Romo's call log, but quickly added, "I'm kidding! I'm not that girl!" So clearly, things weren't great between Romo, Simpson, and Underwood.

Carrie Underwood dissed Kim Kardashian and Kanye West

In 2009, Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley joined forces at the CMA Awards to take a jab at Kanye West, who had interrupted Taylor Swift's acceptance speech at the MTV VMAs earlier that year. According to NBC, Underwood and Paisley played off the famous country song, "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys," and made up their own lyrics. "Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be Kanye. Let them pick guitars, and drive them old trucks, 'cause cowboys have manners, they don't interrupt," they sang.

Then, in 2011, Underwood joined Paisley again along with presenter Eric Stonestreet on stage at the CMA Awards and poked fun at Kim Kardashian again for her very brief marriage to Kris Humphries, according to Us Weekly. Stonestreet said to Underwood and Paisley, "I think you forgot to sing a song about what's weighing on everyone's mind in this room. The divorce of Kim Kardashian and what's his name!" The group then sang the following lines: "I'm going to love you forever or 72 days, Amen, as long as Justin Bieber is not a conceiver, as long as Taylor Swift is with her current boyfriend. I'm going to love you for 20 million dollars, for a hit TV series, or pics in Us Weekly, for 72 Days, Amen."

It's arguably safe to say Kim and Kanye might not be the biggest Underwood fans after that!

Hilary Duff didn't vibe with Carrie Underwood

Carrie Underwood and Hilary Duff were WAGS together when their respective partners, Mike Fisher and Mike Comrie, both suited up for the Ottawa Senators, a professional hockey team over a decade ago. Duff's relationship and eventual marriage to Comrie ended several years ago, but the rumors of her feud with Underwood have survived. While it'd be normal to assume that their fame and hockey connection would've put them on the path to becoming BFFs, it's long been rumored, mostly by fans, that they never hit it off. Amid the reaction to Underwood performing for Donald Trump's inauguration, a post on Threads claiming that Duff used to ignore Underwood's existence at games has gone viral.

The user attached a photo of the stars enjoying a game from different sections of their private suite, but that's pretty much the extent of their receipts on the situation. With that said, a 2009 post from Lainey Gossip helped fuel speculation about their opposing personalities (and potential feud) at the time. According to the publication, Duff and Underwood really didn't interact at games, but unlike the viral threads post, the piece placed the blame on Underwood, claiming that contrary to Duff, who'd built up a rapport with her fellow wives, girlfriends, and fans alike, the "American Idol" winner seemed to be above the socialization. The piece also claimed that Underwood took advantage of the VIP entrances to further avoid socializing with everyone — Duff included.

Taylor Swift didn't appreciate Carrie Underwood's jokes

Taylor Swift is reportedly not very fond of Carrie Underwood, and their supposed beef apparently dates back more than a decade. In February 2013, Us Weekly reported that the musical divas hated each other so badly that their teams went to great lengths to ensure they weren't seated next to each other at the Grammys. "Taylor feels Carrie is always rude to her, so she steer clear of her," shared a source from Swift's camp at the time. This report came a few months after Underwood used Swift's then-recent breakup with Conor Kennedy as inspiration for her CMA monologue. Given that jokes about Swift's love life have been a sore spot for her, it's not difficult to believe they weren't on good terms.

That also wasn't the last time that Underwood reportedly downplayed one of Swift's relationships. According to Radar, Underwood wasn't exactly buying Swift's relationship with Calvin Harris, and her commentary about their bond angered Swift. "There has never been any love between Taylor and Carrie," an insider told the publication. "But things have become icier than ever between them because Taylor overheard back-stabbing snickers that Carrie disrespected Calvin and called her relationship with him a faux-mance!" The source also revealed that Underwood rubbed Swift "the wrong way." Finally, the source also further substantiated the Grammy-seating rumors.

Joy Behar and Kornbread Jeté criticized Carrie's Trump affiliation

Carrie Underwood has lost a ton of support since confirming she'd be one of the musical acts at Donald Trump's second inauguration. Although she won't be the only star taking the stage alongside the 47th president — The Village People and Kid Rock, along with others, have also been confirmed — she's received the brunt of the public outcry. During an episode of "The View," Joy Behar said, "She says, 'I love our country.' How do you love your country and support and normalize somebody who was a convicted felon who really wants to destroy the country, in my opinion?" (via Fox News).

Meanwhile, "RuPaul's Drag Race" alum Kornbread Jeté also voiced her dissatisfaction about Underwood's Trump affiliation. On X, formerly known as Twitter, Jeté took inspiration from Underwood's song, "Before He Cheats," to express her feelings about the inauguration news (and throw out a little slick shade about her relationship). "I hope yo man dab on $3 worth of that bathroom Polo and teaching another h** how to shoot a combo!" she captioned a screenshot of the announcement. Jeté mashed up two different parts of "Before He Cheats." Underwood used the verses to detail the not-so-secret-date between her cheating partner and another woman before getting her sweet revenge in the chorus — and it sounds as if Jeté is hoping that life imitates art for Underwood.

Kelly Clarkson put out feud rumors, just to reignite them

For years there had been a pernicious rumor that the "American Idol" alums Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood had beef with each other. Clarkson, the first winner of the competition, and Underwood, the Season 4 champion, have both found immense success after leaving the reality singing competition. However, the media would often pit the two against each other, to the point of exasperation for the stars. Clarkson took to "Watch What Happens Live" in 2023 to clear the air. However, she did it in such a way as to indicate where there's smoke to these rumors there just might be fire. The singer told Andy Cohen, "There's nothing between us. We don't know each other."

With Underwood performing at Donald Trump's inauguration, it appears Trump has breathed new life into this reported feud once again. Clarkson herself already has an inauguration performance under her belt — she took the stage to sing for Barack Obama's 2013 inauguration. For her part, Clarkson is not speaking up about her personal feelings towards Underwood following in her footsteps once again, which is certainly a classy way of taking the high road. Fans of both singers have been quick to point out that Clarkson seems to have come out the winner in any potential feud. One commenter on X, formerly Twitter, posted, "Carrie can't compete where she doesn't compare." Which, since Underwood doesn't really have much to say about her personal politics, it seems social media is speaking up for her.

Kacey Musgraves has thrown some shade at Carrie Underwood

Speaking of Carrie Underwood's disappointed fans, many have been quick to point out that there's a different country queen they can turn to during these difficult times: Kacey Musgraves. One poster on X summed it up perfectly by saying, "If you need another female country artist that actually gives a s*** about society and women, I present to you Kacey Musgraves." Musgraves boasts an equally impressive music career as Underwood and has been an often vocal supporter of particular politics — something Underwood shies away from. Musgraves is no stranger to other reported feuds with her fellow music stars, like Taylor Swift. As much as Musgraves hasn't mentioned Underwood's inauguration performance, she has definitely given Underwood the side-eye in years past.

When her album "Pageant Material" was coming out, Musgraves sat down for an interview with FADER to hash out her feelings towards the country music scene at the time. The album title itself was a jab at the state of the industry, causing Musgraves herself to often feel she didn't fit in. While going on a tirade about disliking the superficiality of modern country music, Musgraves let some personal grievances slip. The star divulged at the time, "There was this cycle in Nashville where if you were a girl, you had to be really sassy: 'You cheated on me, so I'm going to burn your house down." Which feels like a very thinly veiled reference to Underwood's perpetually popular "Before He Cheats." "I've never felt a kinship to those kinds of songs," she continued.
