Katy Perry's Favorite Smile Tracks Revealed
Katy Perry dropped her album Smile on Aug. 28, 2020, and that's exactly what we'll be doing while listening. Perry's sixth studio album is a musical leap forward for the singer, with pulsating, club-ready beats and polished production, like on 2019's "Never Really Over," which opens the album and is standing its ground on our summer playlists. But don't expect to see any "Left Sharks" or whipped cream-blasting bras here — this is Perry's most mature and joyous collection of songs to date, for better or worse.
Unlike the catchy chaos of 2017's Witness (playing basketball in a six-minute music video with Backpack Kid and a Stranger Things teen ... what?) or the bubblegum beauty of her enduring 2010 classic, Teenage Dream, Smile finds Perry somewhere relatively new: at peace. Since her last album, she's gotten engaged and in late August 2020, the pop superstar welcomed a baby girl, daughter Daisy Dove Bloom ("Daisies" ... that's one of the song titles!), with partner Orlando Bloom.
On her sixth album, Perry doesn't need to prove she's one of the reigning queens of pop music – she already has. That doesn't mean KatyCats won't have album standouts from Smile. Perry certainly does, revealing her favorite tracks on Aug. 2, 2020, during her first #SmileSunday livestream Q&A (which she hosted weekly leading up to the album's release). Perry said the new songs "all mean different things," per Billboard. However, there are a few standouts for her. Here are Katy Perry's favorite songs on Smile.
Katy Perry's two 'Smile' favorites are different than her fiancé's
What are Katy Perry's favorite tracks on her sixth studio album, Smile? The singer had no trouble picking favorites during one of her #SmileSunday Q&A's in August 2020. "'What Makes a Woman' is one of my favorite songs on the album," she told fans, according to Billboard. "It's a great song about how women are so versatile and adaptable and incredible, and I'm realizing a new layer of that right now as I create life."
Musically, the song is a departure for Perry, with some definite folk vibes and a more acoustic sound. "I like the sonic landscape of the song because it's a little more acoustic, and I'd love to go more in that direction in the future," she added.
Another Perry pick? "Cry About It Later." Of the track, she said (via Billboard): "It's a great song because it's kind of ... there's a lot of thoughtful empowering songs on the record, but this one is, you know, sometimes you need to have a couple of drinks to not think about who you're trying to get over, and think about who you're trying to get under!" Perry joked.
Partner Orlando Bloom chimed in briefly with a different favorite: "Daisies." However, added Perry, the actor also has a special fondness for a track that didn't make it. "I think he really likes 'Never Worn White,'" she shared. Maybe Bloom is hinting at something ... wedding date soon? Only time will tell.
