Naya Rivera Opens Up About Abortion And Eating Disorder
Actress and singer Naya Rivera is now a happily married mom to son Josey, 11 months, with actor husband Ryan Dorsey, but her history is a lot darker than most fans realized. The Glee star is shedding some light on her past eating disorder and abortion in her upcoming memoir, Sorry Not Sorry.
Rivera shared excerpts from her book with People, explaining that the eating disorder crept up on her in high school during the midst of her parents splitting up. "By the time I was a sophomore, I started feeling that what had begun as a game had maybe gone too far. I just avoided food at all costs," she said in her book. "If my mom had packed a lunch for me, I'd either trash it or find some excuse to give it away."
"I was so young and it just seemed to be the norm," she told People. "Everyone was going through similar stuff. I had no way of knowing if I was going through it worse. I was juggling my feelings and it makes me sad that there are girls still going through that 15 years after I went through it."
Rivera also confessed to getting an abortion in 2010 after she dumped Dorsey to focus on her career. In her memoir, Rivera said she had the procedure done during her "one day off" from filming Glee. "It was very scary to open up about everything. It's not something a lot of people talk about, but I think they should," she said. "I know some people might read it and say, 'What the Hell?' But I hope someone out there gets something out of it."
After breaking up with Dorsey, Rivera rebounded with rapper Big Sean, who featured on her song "Sorry," which may have partly inspired her book title. The pair got engaged but called off the wedding. Rivera kept the wedding date and married Dorsey instead. Drama!
