This Is Why Armie Hammer Is Separating From His Wife
Actor Armie Hammer and food entrepreneur Elizabeth Chambers announced their separation on July 10, 2020. The news came nearly two months after the couple celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary.
"Thirteen years as best friends, soulmates, partners and then parents," Hammer and Chambers shared on their Instagram accounts. "It has been an incredible journey, but together, we've decided to turn the page and move on from our marriage. As we enter into this next chapter, our children and relationship as co-parents and dear friends will remain our priority."
The Call Me By Your Name actor and Chambers have a daughter, Harper Grace, and a son, Ford Douglas Armand. In recent months, the family had been outside the United States during the coronavirus pandemic, and while in quarantine, Hammer shared some odd Instagram posts that had some of his fans worried about him.
So what really led to Hammer and Chambers' separation? Let's take a look.
From friendship to marriage
Prior to their divorce announcement, Armie Hammer and Elizabeth Chambers were the living example of relationship goals. Their friendship evolved into a relationship in 2008, when Hammer told Chambers to dump her then-boyfriend to date him, according to Vulture.
"Our friendship continued to grow and grow until one day when I was like, 'I can't be friends with you anymore. You've got to break up with your boyfriend, and we've got to start dating,'" Hammer told Vulture.
The couple married two years later in 2010, after Hammer made a convincing case for marriage.
"When we finally got together, Armie really wanted to get married," Chambers told Town & Country in 2013. "He sat me down and said, 'Look, we don't have to do this. We could just go our own ways, and then one day you'll be 40 and divorced and we'll run into each other, and we'll laugh and go out to dinner and have this same connection, and we'll wonder why we wasted all of that time. Or we could just do it now and enjoy the ride.'"
From celebration to separation
The first half of 2020 saw Armie Hammer and Elizabeth Chambers celebrating 10 years of marriage and giving advice on how to achieve a long marriage under the spotlight — a sharp contrast to the news of their separation in July.
In February 2020, Elizabeth Chambers shared with Us Weekly how she and Hammer maintained their marriage, even when they were separated by distance.
"He is leaving for London on Valentine's Day. I'm flying with the kids the night before. He literally has to be on a plane that day," she said. "So we're flying to Chicago for 12 hours just to all be together."
Hammer, Chambers, and their two children quarantined in the Cayman Islands during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic. Chambers told Forbes in June 2020 that a planned trip to the Caribbean territory in March turned into an extended stay as the borders closed due to the pandemic.
"Due to travel restrictions, school closures and the fact that we were planning to be here with our extended family two weeks later for spring break, we made this decision for the health and safety of our family," Chambers posted on Instagram in April.
The couple celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary in May 2020, with Chambers sharing a photo from their wedding day.
"TEN years married, twelve together, thirteen years as best friends. Happy Anniversary, my love," she wrote. "I'm beyond grateful for you, this decade, our family and the dreamiest Friday night anniversary sunset," she posted.
Hammer's weird behavior
While Armie Hammer and Elizabeth Chambers were in quarantine, most attention was aimed toward Hammer's behavior. Just as coronavirus-related shutdowns affected the country in March 2020, Hammer was spotted reciting the poem "Valentine" by Wendy Cope in New York City's Central Park, according to Page Six.
By mid-April, the actor posted a new look that left many fans scratching their heads — and wondering what was going on inside of Hammer's. Hammer did away with his usual smooth hair and shared a new selfie featuring a mohawk and a peculiar mustache. Completing the strange look was a fringed crop top.
Five days after his wedding anniversary in May 2020, a mustachioed Hammer emerged shirtless in an Instagram video on a golf course while chugging a beer that he captioned, "When the world is ending but you already have come to terms with the fact that this current time is ruled by chaos..."
Fans were worried about Hammer at the time, and the news of his and Chambers' separation certainly came out of left field. However, it's unclear how long the couple's separation has been in the works. The pair are keeping things private.
"We understand this news lends itself to public dialogue, but in the interest of our children and our family, we're asking for privacy, compassion and love during this time," Hammer wrote on Instagram.
As the couple embarks on their separation, they're focusing on their two children, Harper and Ford, according to People.
