The Truth About Miley Cyrus And Kaitlynn Carter's Relationship
Although Miley Cyrus and Kaitlynn Carter's 2019 romance was brief, it garnered a lot of headlines as it was the perfect storm of celebrity news.
Let's recap: Kaitlynn and Brody Jenner announced their split on Aug. 2, 2019, with their reps telling People, "They love and respect one another, and know that this is the best decision for their relationship moving forward." As if the breakup wasn't shocking enough, fans soon found out that Kaitlynn and Brody were never legally married, as TMZ reported.
After the split, Kaitlynn vacationed with Miley and other members of the Cyrus family in Italy, sharing now-deleted photos on Instagram. However, an Aug. 9, 2019, photo from Miley's sister, Brandi Cyrus, remains on the platform as of this writing. Other than the seemingly random revelation that the singer and the reality TV star were friendly, there wasn't much of a fuss... until the next day. On Aug. 10, 2010, Miley and Liam Hemsworth confirmed their breakup. Miley's rep shared with People, "They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy." Just a couple of hours later, the Hannah Montana alum lost any semblance of the privacy that she requested, as TMZ published photos of Miley and Kaitlynn kissing. The snaps sparked relationship rumors and some social media shade from Brody.
Intrigued yet? Let's take a closer look at Kaitlynn's relationship with Miley.
Brody Jenner and Miley Cyrus threw shade on Instagram
On Aug. 11, 2019, the day after the kissing photos hit the internet, Brody Jenner shared a photo of himself with the caption, "Don't let yesterday take up too much of today." His The Hills: New Beginnings co-star Brandon Lee associated those words with the Italy photos, commenting, "Let's round this scandal out and post a pic of us making out," as screenshotted by the Instagram account, Comments by Celebs.
Brody made that link a lot less subtle when he responded, "Watch out! Pics of Liam [Hemsworth] and I holding hands on the beach coming out soon." Then Miley Cyrus chimed in, telling Brody, "go take a nap in your truck and cool off #HotGirlSummer." That clap back seemingly confirmed that Miley watched The Hills reboot, as Brody's first scene of the show involved him waking up in his truck, admitting he slept there after a fight with Kaitlynn Carter.
Brody made up for the shade with a kind message about Kaitlynn that he posted (and later deleted). He reportedly wrote, per Us Weekly, "There is far too much negativity being directed at someone who I love and care about very much." He went on to explain, "We, like many others before us and many after us, grew in different directions over those same 6 years."
Brody said, "She deserves to be able to move forward in her life with respect and happiness," which prompted a heart emoji from his ex.
Miley Cyrus and Kaitlynn Carter's relationship was very public
After those vacation photos were published, Miley Cyrus and Kaitlynn Carter shared tons of affectionate in public. In August 2019, Page Six reported that the couple "couldn't keep their hands off of each other" at a club, with a "spy" claiming, "They were kissing and making out everywhere. In the bathroom, at the bar, in the middle of the floor... There's no question they're together."
They were also photographed holding hands backstage at the 2019 Video Music Awards, according to People. The duo even wore "matching" outfits more than once, but in their defense, one of those outfits was an all-black look, and the other was a black top and jeans.
Apparently, Kaitlynn and Brody Jenner are amicable exes considering she and Miley sent him a "joint" birthday gift on Aug. 21, 2019. The gifted weed bouquet included a card that said, "WEED like to wish you a Happy Birthday! Love you!," according to Entertainment Tonight. That day, a tattoo artist revealed via Instagram that Miley got ink inspired by Italy, which Refinery29 interpreted as a reference to her summer vacation with Kaitlynn.
On Sept. 2, 2019, People reported that Kaitlynn and Miley were living together. A few days later, Daily Mail published photos of Kaitlynn wearing an "M" ring, possibly in honor of Miley. However, that jewelry tribute was short-lived with People reporting on Sept. 21, 2019, that they split.
Kaitlynn Carter is 'super private' about dating now
In November 2019, Kaitlynn Carter penned an essay for Elle on her relationship with Miley Cyrus. She began, "This past July, I went on vacation with a female friend; the next thing I knew, I was in love with her." She admitted, "Until that trip, it had never crossed my mind that I was even capable of loving a woman the way I loved her. But after reflecting on my romantic history, I realized that I've never really had a 'type.'"
The social influencer shared, "Although the relationship with my friend was often referenced in the media as merely a 'summer fling' or a 'same-sex affair,' it was so much more than that. This was a profound journey of self-discovery."
In June 2020, Kaitlynn dished on the relationship again during an episode of Nick Viall's podcast, The Viall Files. She shared, "Since last fall, once that whole situation [with Miley] came to a wrap, I was like, 'That's the last time I'm doing a public thing.'" She admitted, "It's so hard to go through a breakup in the public eye, too. It's so rough."
The influencer added, "But there's also a lot to be gained and learned from that. So now, I'm just super, super private."
Well, as private as she can be as a reality TV star. But it's understandable that she doesn't want to share every single thing.
