The Untold Truth Of Iggy Azalea
Iggy Azalea threw her Instagram followers for a loop when she announced on June 10, 2020 that she's officially a mom. According to TODAY, the "Fancy" rapper shared her big news on Instagram Story with a starkly simple message that began with, "I have a son."
Azalea added, "I kept waiting for the right time to say something but it feels like the more time passes, the more I realize I'm always going to feel anxious to share news that giant with the world." While she noted she wants "to keep his life private," she also "wanted to make it clear he is not a secret & I love him beyond words."
Congrats, Iggy! The Australian rapper did not offer any more information on her son, but according to People, she is still dating rapper Playboi Carti. While we are digging her mom vibes, Azalea has had a long journey on the road to becoming a rap queen, so here are all the juicy details of her remarkable life.
Iggy Azalea's fall from her rap throne
Iggy Azalea, born Amethyst Amelia Kelly, is an Australian-born rapper who moved to the U.S. Her 2014 debut album, The New Classic, brought her almost-instant renown. According to Billboard, her song "Fancy" (featuring Charli XCX) became the 2014 "song of the summer." She then jumped on a collaboration with Ariana Grande for the song "Problem" and Azalea became a bonafide rap goddess.
And "goddess" is right. According to LA Weekly, Azalea stands at a whopping 5'10" and uses her beauty and bodacious bod to her advantage. Check out her social media or any of her music videos! It's hard to look away.
It seemed like 2014 was the year for Azalea, but then things oddly fizzled out Just as she started hot and fast, by the end of the year, it looked like the rapper was heading for trouble. According to Billboard, she got involved in one too many fights, thanks to "her social media dust-ups and defensive responses to accusations of cultural appropriation that came from within and around the hip-hop community."
Instead of a long list of hits, what followed Azalea's ascent (and what weighed it down) was her long list of feuds.
Iggy Azalea feuded with Papa John's Pizza (and several others)
Following Iggy Azalea's successful year in 2014, her luck turned. All of a sudden, it felt like the rapper was fighting with everyone. According to Cosmopolitan, Azalea actually got into a Twitter feud with Azealia Banks back in 2011, but the two gals seemed to make up.
Then there was a rumored spat between Azalea and Nicki Minaj, where people thought Minaj was dissing Azalea at the 2014 BET Awards. According to Cosmo, Minaj "promised to always write her own lyrics but offered 'no shade' at other artists who needed a little outside help." This comment came right after people discovered Azalea had assistance writing "Fancy."
Then, in October 2014, Snoop Dogg made fun of Azalea's looks, per Us Weekly, which was super mean and uncalled for. Ultimately he apologized and Azalea wrote, "I appreciate the apology @snoopdogg," Cosmo reported. Perhaps one of the most notorious of Azalea's fights was in February 2015 between herself and Papa John's Pizza. The rapper claimed that the man who delivered her pizza later shared her phone number. According to Cosmopolitan, when Papa John's wasn't professional enough in their apology, Azalea got mad. Fair enough!
What followed was disastrous not only for Azalea's career, but also on her mental health. According to Billboard, by May 2015, her tour called The Great Escape was totally canceled. Not only that, but she had to take a "mental health 'retreat'" in 2017, per the outlet.
Iggy Azalea dealt with some serious relationship drama
Iggy Azalea hasn't even been free from romantic drama throughout her rocky career. In 2016, just as Azalea was opening up about her mental health struggles, according to USA Today, she found out that her fiancé and basketball star, Nick Young (pictured), had cheated on her. To make matters even harder, Young's infidelity reportedly resulted in a pregnancy with his ex, the mother of his previous son.
In a since-deleted tweet, Azalea said (via Entertainment Tonight), "I have never even been told by [N]ick that his baby mother is pregnant so if this is true I'm finding out via E news." Ouch. Poor Iggy!
However, after that situation, Azalea embarked on a new relationship with rapper, Playboi Carti. They moved in together in Atlanta and in a 2019 interview with Fader, Carti explained Azalea's effect on him when they met: "Once I started talking to her, I just cut off everybody. It was over with." He added, "I support everything she does."
According to Fader, the pair met in 2018 while "Carti was overseas on tour." The couple has had a bit of drama, with a brief breakup in December 2019, according to TMZ, but they were spotted together early in 2020 together in Australia. So it looks like they're still going strong!
