Celebs Who Can't Stand Gwyneth Paltrow
It's hard to tell exactly how Gwyneth Paltrow became so hated. Somewhere down the line of $75 vagina-scented candles, rose quartz-infused water bottles, and consistently forgetting entire chunks of her working career, the world kind of just shrugged and realized the star was a little bit out of touch. It's not that Paltrow is malicious, but it's hard to relate to a person who thinks repeatedly getting stung by bees is an effective, normal treatment for inflammation. We'd sooner see her dining on a meal of bee pollen with Victoria Beckham or foraging for wild food with Shailene Woodley than attempting the very serious reality of trying to eat healthy on food stamps.
In 2013, Star magazine crowned the Goop goddess the "Most Hated Celebrity," which rightly made her question how she could have possibly ranked higher than felony abuser Chris Brown, when all she's doing is sitting in a corner steam cleaning her lady bits. It turns out, though, that you don't have to cast a yoni egg very far to find someone who can't stand the star. But the wellness guru is riding the hate all the way to the bank. Today, Paltrow sits on her jade-encrusted throne as the owner of a $250 million lifestyle brand, so who's laughing now?
Martha Stewart can't stop shading Gwyneth Paltrow
Much like Kanye West's feud with Taylor Swift, the beef between Martha Stewart and Gwyneth Paltrow has been kicking for what feels like an eternity — or at least seven Martha Stewart white sales. The Cut places its origins as far back as 2013, but it's since escalated into a full-fledged war between two houses (if Game of Thrones took place in a Connecticut mansion and everyone's linens were perfectly folded).
In 2014, Stewart told Porter magazine (via Page Six) that Paltrow "just needs to be quiet. She's a movie star. If she were confident in her acting, she wouldn't be trying to be Martha Stewart." That same year, Eater reported that she published a six-page Martha Stewart Living spread about pie called "Conscious Coupling," which was clearly a swipe at Paltrow's "conscious uncoupling" from her ex-husband Chris Martin (as if the wounds from her divorce weren't deep enough). Paltrow followed with a Goop recipe for "Jailbird Cake," just in case you forgot that Stewart is an ex-con.
And the feud between the two lifestyle gurus certainly hasn't been watered down like the iced glasses of wine Stewart nurses after a long day of painting the soles of her Louboutins black. In September 2017, Stewart pulled a total Mariah Carey on Watch What Happens Live, when she joked, "Who's Goop?" On the same show in early 2020, she dismissed Paltrow's c**chie candle customers as just "guys who are horny." Your move, Goop.
Tom Holland is just some 'guy' to Gwyneth Paltrow
If Tom Holland dislikes Gwyneth Paltrow, she's blissfully unaware of it, because the Goop founder has no idea who the Spider-Man actor is despite the fact that they both worked on the Avengers films and Spider-Man: Homecoming. This is a feat of epic proportions considering Holland plays Homecoming's eponymous star. He's the Spider-Man. Peter Parker, himself. If this was Broadway, it'd be like walking right past the giant letters on the marquee, throwing the playbill in the trash, and taking a seat. Nonetheless, in a trivia segment for Popsugar, Holland admitted that it "breaks [his] heart" that Paltrow, who plays Tony Stark's personal-assistant-turned-paramour Pepper Potts, didn't remember Spider-Man: Homecoming at all. In fact, she apparently didn't even bother learning Holland's name, though she took a photo with him on the set of Avengers: Endgame.
"She was in her blue suit, and I was in my Spider-Man suit, and she came up and she asked me for a photo with me and Robert," he said. "And then I think she posted it and she said 'Robert Downey Jr. and myself and this guy' ... I was just the guy." Indeed, Paltrow's Instagram caption merely described the British actor as "the other guy in the photo." At least she's not pretending to remember?
Gwyneth Paltrow iced out The Winter Soldier
Sebastian Stan is another actor cast away in the black hole that is Gwyneth Paltrow's memory of ever having been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Perhaps all that Brain Dust Moon Juice (yep, that's an actual Goop product) is really affecting her head — and Captain America's sidekick is having none of it. The actor, who plays Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Soldier, called out Paltrow after he had to make her acquaintance — again, as it were — to the star during Paris Fashion Week even though they've worked together more than once.
"Glad I got to reintroduce myself to [Gwyneth Paltrow] for the third time," he captioned an Instagram post from the event, tagging his co-star. "We are in the same film..."
Hey, if he's going to talk about the lifestyle guru, at least he has the respect to do it to her face. According to Insider, Paltrow has been part of the MCU since her debut in 2008's Iron Man. Stan joined a couple years later for Captain America: The First Avenger. Both of them appeared in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. To be fair, their characters don't interact a whole lot, but they both filmed the epic Thanos battle scene and the funeral at the end of Endgame. Maybe a fourth reintroduction will be the charm if Stan even wants to go there.
Gwyneth Paltrow wasn't even on JLo's radar in the 90s
Today it seems like Jennifer Lopez and Gwyneth Paltrow have a lot in common. They're both multi-millionaires, with JLo reportedly worth four times as much as Gwyn. They both follow clean diets (those abs don't make themselves). They even both dated Ben Affleck, so it's easy to forget that the pair come from two entirely different worlds. JLo clawed her way out of the Bronx bedroom she shared with her two siblings and — against all odds — somehow made it in Hollywood. Paltrow was born there, her father a prominent director, and her mother, a Tony Award-winning star. It makes sense that these two women wouldn't get along, particularly decades ago when the divide was even greater.
In 2019, a 21-year-old Movieline interview with Lopez went viral — and let's just say that Jenny from the Block didn't sugar coat her feelings about Paltrow, lest she consume a simple carbohydrate that interferes with her ability to spin upside down while belting the high notes. "Tell me what she's been in? I swear to God, I don't remember anything she was in," Lopez said, adding, "Some people get hot by association. I heard more about her and Brad Pitt than I ever heard about her work."
About a year later, Paltrow won an Oscar for Shakespeare in Love, so it's safe to say that people have definitely heard about her work now. Prove 'em wrong, girl!
Cindy McCain didn't love Goop's war analogy
Oh, Gwyneth Paltrow and the habitual missteps that make the general population scratch their heads. In 2014, the star was so busy battling Martha Stewart via pastry recipes that she might have missed the part where she wasn't actually in a legitimate war. Though, it can get confusing when both her and Melania Trump wear their army-inspired jackets and complain about online bullies. Either way, Cindy McCain — wife of Senator John McCain — was not pleased.
Speaking with Vox's Recode, Paltrow compared her experience living in the trenches of the internet's fiercest hate to surviving a war. "It's almost like how, in war, you go through this bloody, dehumanizing thing, and then something is defined out of it," she said, adding, "My hope is, as we get out of it, we'll reach the next level of conscience."
Everyone knows that the first rule of the internet is that trolls won't ever reach a higher level of "conscience." They're a lost cause. The second rule is that you're always going to offend someone, and sometimes that person has every right to be offended. On that particular day, this person was the wife of a decorated war veteran. The late senator's wife fired back in a series of tweets. "Gweneth [sic] Paltrow is a joke. Her life is like taking bullets for a soldier. What a joke! My 2 sons serving in the military should talk to her," she wrote. Whoops!
Graydon Carter took the kid gloves off with Gwyneth Paltrow
Gwyneth Paltrow has an obvious gripe with the tabloids, but it's a bit unexpected for the star to feud with a glossy. Those are generally the outlets that let the actor shill her Goop products. Nonetheless, it's pretty clear that both Vanity Fair and the lifestyle guru can't stand each other. The whole thing boils down to a piece the magazine planned to publish without the star's pre-approval. Sorry, but did they really need her permission?
According to Page Six, Paltrow's feud with Vanity Fair's then editor-in-chief Graydon Carter was ignited when she was asked to collaborate on a cover story but declined because of recent "unflattering" profiles of actors like Tom Cruise and her ex, Brad Pitt. Carter decided to truck forward without her blessing, so the Contagion star allegedly sent out an email urging her A-list friends to blacklist Vanity Fair. Reportedly quoting Paltrow's email, the tab claimed Paltrow pleaded, "Vanity Fair is threatening to put me on the cover of their magazine. If you are asked for quotes or comments, please decline. Also, I recommend you all never do this magazine again."
Paltrow's email only fanned the flame. Carter told The Times in London that he was more compelled to run the piece after the alleged email leaked. "Some famous people believe that they live in a cone of celebrity that protects them," he said, adding, "But it doesn't really exist anymore in LA unless they stay in."
The Madonna v. Gwyneth Paltrow feud is as petty as possible
The Queen of Pop is also the queen of shade if we've learned anything from her long-standing feud with Elton John, but that's not the only celeb that Madonna's soured on. At one point, Madge and Gwyneth Paltrow were tighter than a jade egg nesting inside a you-know-what, but according to Us Weekly, they allegedly had a falling out in June 2010. A source told the tabloid that they were no longer speaking.
Of course, the "Lucky Star" singer's rep denied the feud to the Daily Mail, but Paltrow had already exacerbated the rumors by jabbing the Material Girl in a conversation about Tracy Anderson, who had recently stopped training the singer and went into business with Paltrow. "Yeah, it's good that [Tracy] doesn't train Madonna any more ... She keeps people waiting — it takes up your whole day," Paltrow told British Vogue (via The Telegraph).
By 2013, the feud escalated into the most A-List shade possible: Madge snubbed Paltrow at the Met Gala. A source told Us Weekly (via Celeb****y) that the "Papa Don't Preach" crooner had "sh** on [Paltrow] over and over" until the Goopstress ditched her. In turn, she felt "abandoned" by Gwyn, so she was going to "do anything to make her suffer." That's a bit too harsh to seem true, but according to Mirror, that's the same year Paltrow proudly implied her abs were better than Madge's, which is apparently the takeaway of all this drama.
Joan Rivers' theory on what Gwyneth Paltrow's problem is
If you've ever poked fun at Joan Rivers during her lifetime, it's a safe bet that you got it right back. Or maybe you never even dished it out in the first place. The comedian was known for her snarky commentary about A-listers far and wide, may Fashion Police forever take up residence in our problematic hearts. Gwyneth Paltrow was, of course, not immune.
In 2013, the Sliding Doors star told Harper's Bazaar that she'd never "do Botox again, because [she] looked crazy." Then she dropped this bit of shade: "I looked like Joan Rivers!" This probably didn't put her on Rivers' good side, who made some jabs about Paltrow on her show. The jokes upset Paltrow, and in an interview with Watch What Happens Live, Rivers revealed that she came in to talk about the negative comments (Fashion Police was apparently not lucky enough to simply be blacklisted in an email like Vanity Fair).
"'The worst criticism was — ugh — Gwyneth Paltrow ... She came in and yelled at us, but she stood up. She can't sit down 'cause she's got a stick up her rear end," Rivers said. "So um, the world's most beautiful woman voted by Hellen Keller and Stevie Wonder." As if it wasn't clear enough, Rivers concluded, "Not my favorite." Yeah, we got that, Joan.
Honest v. Goop: The battle of the celebrity brands
As lifestyle gurus, you'd think that Jessica Alba, who runs The Honest Company, and Mrs. Goop herself would get along. They should theoretically be the kind of besties who trade genitalia-scented candles and non-toxic household products, but according to OK! USA, things were, in fact, toxic on the set of their TV series Planet of the Apps. The pair reportedly couldn't stand each other.
An insider who spoke to the tabloid claimed that Paltrow and Alba were "like oil and water" to the point that it was "shocking they even agreed to do [the show] together." Both women reportedly took jabs at the other's business. Paltrow supposedly claimed Goop was "a very ethical company," which inferred a contrast to the ingredient controversy that got The Honest Company sued. Alba reportedly criticized Goop for only "catering to the wealthy," while claiming The Honest Company "connects with real women." It didn't stop there, either. Competition aside, the pair couldn't figure out how to run their series.
"Gwyneth is a delegator, while Jess likes to roll up her sleeves — she's even criticized Gwen's hands-off style," the alleged insider told the tab, adding, "Producers are going nuts trying to keep things peaceful." At the time of this writing, the series never made it beyond its first season, though it would have been interesting watching it slowly turn into Celebrity Deathmatch.
The head of a whole country's health system isn't jazzed about Goop
Gwyneth Paltrow hasn't just annoyed the Hollywood set with her trademark aloofness. While the Goopstress was floating on $395 sneakers in the upper echelons of Tinsel Town, oblivious to why the poor can't eat organic on $29 a week, and acting like the red carpet causes the same emotional scars as the trenches of the Vietnam War, she was met with harsh criticism from Simon Stevens, the chief executive of Britain's National Health Service.
During a 2020 event in Oxford (per Associated Press via USA Today), Stevens warned that the star's lifestyle brand and Netflix series, The Goop Lab With Gwyneth Paltrow, convey "considerable risks to health" because they gave credence to "quacks, charlatans and cranks" while promoting various, "untested" wellness products and services. "Gwyneth Paltrow's brand peddles 'psychic vampire repellent,' says 'chemical sunscreen is a bad idea,' and promotes colonic irrigation and DIY coffee enema machines," Stevens said, noting that the results of these treatments were not backed by scientific evidence.
According to USA Today, a spokesperson for Goop did claim that the company "takes efficacy and product claims very seriously," but it's impossible to not mention that the brand was forced to pay a $145,000 settlement in a false advertising lawsuit. According to Business Insider, the lawsuit was centered around health claims the brand made about their jade egg, rose quartz egg, and "Inner Judge" flower essence that were, again, not backed by science.
Even Gwyneth Paltrow couldn't stand Gwyneth Paltrow for a while
Gwyneth Paltrow doesn't really care what people think about her. She tries to not even read her own press, telling Marie Claire UK, "It's none of my business what people think about me." In truth, it's not. The actor-turned-lifestyle mogul has built a $250 million brand off the back of bad press. Controversy happens to be excellent clickbait. What really matters is what the most hated celebrity on the planet thinks of herself, and as it turns out, Gwyneth Paltrow sometimes can't even stand Gwyneth Paltrow. She told the Sunday Times' Style magazine, that it took until age 40 to "start getting my head out of my a**."
In the past, Paltrow has waxed poetic about realizing fame had transformed her into a person she didn't really like. In that same Style Magazine interview, she claimed it happened after the success of Shakespeare In Love, when she became the "number one female movie star in the world." An Oscar will do that.
"Look, I'm famous, I get famous-person treatment," she said. "You don't want to be an a**hole, but slowly if people start removing obstacles for you, if you live in a world where you never have to sit in line, where people don't confront you, where they don't tell you the truth, that's what you become. That's what I became ... Luckily, my dad burst my bubble for me in a way that it could never be reconstructed."
