The Truth About Mary-Kate Olsen's Dating History
Mary-Kate Olsen is divorcing her French banker husband, Pierre Olivier Sarkozy, after five years of marriage. Olsen filed for divorce on April 17, 2020 but was notified that New York courts are not filing divorce papers because of the coronavirus, according to Page Six.
However, the situation is proving desperate and Olsen asked for permission to file an emergency divorce petition, per the outlet. The gravity of their divorce is exacerbated by the fact that Sarkozy terminated the lease on their New York home without notifying Olsen.
This means that Olsen will be forced to vacate their home by May 18, 2020 but she has asked courts to extend her access to their home until May 30 or later. Olsen said of the ordeal: "I am petrified that my husband is trying to deprive me of the home we have lived in and if he is successful, I will not only lose my home but I risk losing my personal property as well."
While things have ended so tragically between Olsen and Sarkozy, we remember a time when they would get busted for packing on the PDA at events. Now that those days are long gone, let's take a look at Olsen's leading men throughout her life.
Mary-Kate Olsen dated pop culture artist, Nate Lowman
Olivier Sarkozy has been the main man in Mary-Kate Olsen's life for many years now. Their age difference, with Sarkozy being 16 years her senior, sparked concern, but Olsen negated that by saying to the Wall Street Journal: "Everyone has an opinion. I find it's better to focus on what's in front of you and to keep putting one foot in front of the other."
Apparently, age and maturity was exactly what Olsen was looking for. According to a 2012 article in Us Weekly, Olsen was "constantly complaining about boys not being mature enough for her. She got the kids out of her system. Now being a businesswoman dominates her time, and she is rarely impressed with guys."
While Olsen and Sarkozy started dating in 2012, according to HuffPost, her closest relationship prior to the French banker was with the artist, Nate Lowman (pictured above). He and Olsen met in 2008 through mutual friends and dated until 2010. According to Vanity Fair, Lowman's art was a "reconciling the detritus of pop culture" through the use of "smiley faces, magnetized bullet holes, and Arbre Magique air fresheners."
Before Lowman, Olsen was rumored to be dating Heath Ledger, according to Us Weekly around the time of his death in January 2008. According to People, Olsen and Ledger dated casually for about three months prior to his passing. Neither party was interested in making it exclusive.
Mary-Kate Olsen was devastated after Stavros Niarchos left her for Paris Hilton
Prior to Mary-Kate Olsen's relationship with Nate Lowman, Olsen dated the photographer and oil heir Maxwell Snow, a relative of Uma Thurman's, according to HuffPost. They dated around 2006-2007 though, according to The New York Times, it was a brief dalliance.
Prior to dating Snow, Olsen was in a relationship with Stavros Niarchos (pictured), the Greek shipping heir, according to HuffPost. However, they broke up after five months of dating, when Niarchos left Olsen for Paris Hilton, according to W Magazine. The breakup left Olsen, who was just 19 at the time, completely devastated, as she told the outlet: "I miss him and I love him and I don't speak with him anymore. It's a hurtful and painful subject. I've pretty much been with someone my whole life, so this is a hard time for me."
The breakup also meant that Olsen wasn't speaking to Hilton either, thus severing in their friendship. This rupture also led to Olsen's departure from NYU, after she began her studies in September 2004, according to People. Instead, she returned to Los Angeles for some R&R.
Mary-Kate Olsen's boyfriend helped her recover from an eating disorder
Before Mary-Kate Olsen started school at NYU in September 2004, she dated David Katzenberg (pictured), the son of DreamWorks co founder Jeffrey Katzenberg, according to HuffPost. The two dated for about nine months, according to People. The couple met in 2003 and began dating in Los Angeles, where Olsen was recovering from an eating disorder, per the outlet, and Katzenberg supported her.
However, they decided to split up before the school year started and ended the relationship in LA, before both flew back east. Olsen was attending NYU while Katzenberg was going to Boston College. Allegedly, though, the breakup was amicable, according to People: "It was a mutual parting of the ways and amicable. Being at different schools played a part. It's reasonable for her to start school fresh."
Prior to this relationship, Olsen dated Max Winkler, son of "Happy Days" star, Henry Winkler, according to HuffPost. The couple began dating in 2002. Winkler told New York Magazine that he dated MK for the right reasons: "I dated an Olsen twin because I was in love with an Olsen twin. But I wasn't in love with her because she was 'an Olsen twin.' I just thought she was so pretty and smart and cute."
