Weird Things Everyone Ignores About Kate Hudson
Kate Hudson is one of the most recognizable actresses in the world, having starred in popular movies such as Bride Wars, Almost Famous, How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days, and Something Borrowed. But alongside her impressive acting career, Hudson has been developing several exciting projects outside of the entertainment industry. She's also been expanding her family and, as of this writing, is a mother of three. And while fans of the star might know the basics about her, including the fact that her mom is Goldie Hawn and her stepdad is Kurt Russell, there are so many aspects of Hudson's life that have remained mysteries, until now.
In a 2018 interview with PopSugar UK, Hudson discussed her incredible career up until that point, saying, "Along the way, I have worked with so many incredible people, and it's not even about the success of the films. It's about the people I've shared ideas with and all of the lessons I've learned along the way. I have such gratitude for all of the people I've been able to work with throughout my career." Join us as we explore some of the stranger details of Kate Hudson's life that you might not have heard about.
Kate Hudson's eyes aren't actually blue
Something you might not know about Kate Hudson is that her eyes are green. And the reason you might not know this seemingly obvious fact is because the actress routinely finds herself getting Photoshopped on magazine covers. At the 2008 European premiere of her movie Fool's Gold (via Metro), Hudson revealed, "I can't tell you how many covers of magazines I've been on when my eyes were blue." The star continued, saying, "I don't have blue eyes. I have green eyes. So, you just kind of go with it, you know, it's like it is what it is and that's what people do, you know."
And as for whether she ever calls anyone out on the misrepresentation, Hudson explained, "I just tend to let those things go," which makes sense, as her eyes aren't the only body part that often gets altered. In 2008, the Daily Mail reported that Hudson's bust size had been digitally enhanced on the movie posters for Fool's Gold. Metro quoted the actress as saying, "They are totally not my boobs, mine aren't that big." She continued, "On the poster they look perfect and if I ever got my boobs done I'd take that poster to the doctor and say, this is what I want them to look like."
Kate Hudson felt like a teen mom with her first child
During an appearance on Live with Kelly and Ryan in 2019, Kate Hudson mentioned her oldest son, Ryder Robinson, and said, "I was like 12 when I [had him] ... In terms of like a Hollywood actress, I was like a teen mom." Hudson gave birth to Ryder in 2004 when she was 24 years old. At the time, she was married to musician Chris Robinson of The Black Crowes and, in many ways, her movie career was just beginning. As a result, Hudson felt like a young mother. As she told Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest, "Me and Reese [Witherspoon] were like teen moms. We had kids really super young." Witherspoon, of course, gave birth to her daughter, Ava Phillippe, in 1999 when she was just 23 years old, so it makes sense that the two actresses have bonded over having babies early in their careers.
Since having Ryder, Hudson has given birth to two more children. Bingham Bellamy was born in 2011 to Hudson and her then-partner, Muse frontman Matt Bellamy. Then, in 2018, Hudson and her partner Danny Fujikawa welcomed their first child together, daughter Rani Rose Fujikawa.
Kate Hudson had a strangely secretive relationship with Nick Jonas
Pretty much everyone is aware that Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra are married. But before Jonas settled down with Chopra, he had at least some form of relationship with Kate Hudson. Both Jonas and Hudson have remained extremely hush-hush about their time together, although the reason why is unclear.
In 2016, Jonas gave a rare interview in which he mentioned the Almost Famous actress. When asked by Complex if he and Hudson were intimate, the star chuckled before thoughtfully responding: "Kate's incredible. We had an unbelievable connection as two humans who just admire things about each other, and see something in each other that's beautiful." However, the singer refused to elaborate too much on his relationship with the star, saying instead, "Out of my best effort to respect her and her privacy, I'm not going to say if we had sex or not. But we did have a beautiful connection. Even now I have so much admiration and respect. She's amazing."
While it's unclear why the rumored couple has remained so tightlipped, they seemed to have a lot of fun together when they were allegedly dating. In September 2015, People reported that Hudson and Jonas had spent the day together at Disney's Hollywood Studios in Florida, after which the actress attended one of Jonas' concerts. A source told People, "She gave him a hug and a quick peck before she went to her seat."
Kate Hudson met Danny Fujikawa while pregnant with her first child
Kate Hudson has been happily dating Danny Fujikawa since December 2016. However, they've known each other for much longer. The actress opened up about the couple's first date, and the surprising way she met Fujikawa, in an Instagram post celebrating their first anniversary. Hudson explained, "The first time I met Danny I was 23 and enormously pregnant with Ryder. His step sisters are my best friends [Sara and Erin Foster] and so it goes we have been in the same circle for over a decade!"
Since that first meeting, Hudson and Fujikawa remained friends, but there was no romantic spark until 15 years later. Hudson continued, "Danny took me on a hike and what I thought was just a hike with a family friend turned very quickly into an unexpected first date. No moves were made on this first date. In fact, it took months for him to make a first move! "
Having known Fujikawa as a "family friend" for many years, and having met him when she was pregnant for the first time, it's clear that Hudson has a special bond with her partner. As she said on Instagram, "So on our 15th year of knowing each other we were able to open our hearts to each other to feel so much pure love and it's been truly incredible."
Kate Hudson made this cringey comment about having a C-section
Having given birth to three children, Kate Hudson knows what it means to be a mother. Yet and still, she rubbed some of her fans the wrong way when she discussed her decision to have a C-section during an interview with Cosmopolitan for the magazine's October 2017 issue. According to HuffPost, when Hudson was asked to name "the laziest thing" she'd ever done, she answered, "Have a C-section!"
While the How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days star was likely making a jokey comment with her answer, many people took to social media to express their dismay at the flippant remark. One fan tweeted, "I lost all respect for her. I have had [two C-sections] out of necessity, so not lazy, took months to recover." Another remarked, "No method of childbirth is 'lazy.'"
In the article, Hudson was referring to the C-section she had with her first child. Although many mothers would not agree with the actress' "lazy" remark, it's possible Hudson felt it was easier than giving birth to her two subsequent children. Discussing the October 2018 birth of her daughter on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Hudson revealed, "I was induced, trying to do it naturally, and then everyone would be in the room and I'd have those crazy contractions." Ultimately, the star opted for a "walking epidural."
Kate Hudson and Goldie Hawn don't just have your usual mother-daughter conversations
Kate Hudson is definitely lucky in the mom department as she was raised by actress Goldie Hawn. Mother and daughter are very alike, and incredibly close, which they demonstrated during an interview with People in 2020. Hudson explained, "We talk a lot about sex. Surprisingly." According to Hawn, she started speaking to her daughter about the subject early in her life, revealing, "I said, 'I want you to understand something about Mommy. I'm not a prude."
As Hudson got older, the pair continued their honest discussions, as the How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days star said, "You were trying to engage and asking like what was going on with me sexually. I was like, 'Mom, let's just say that I'm kind of a sexually-oriented type of personality.' And she goes, 'Please, I have known that since you were two years old.'"
The mother and daughter are so close that it was a given that Hawn was in the delivery room when Hudson gave birth to son Bingham and daughter Rani. On The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Hawn said of Rani's birth, "I'm trying to get in on [the doctor] to try to look over his shoulder. And now I see the head and I'm going, 'Oh! There's the head!' And then it went back, and he said, 'Goldie, if you get any closer, you're going to fall in!'"
Kate Hudson and Jimmy Fallon were almost a thing
Kate Hudson has been linked to some celebrity heartthrobs in her time, but in April 2020 she revealed that there's one star she would've dated had he made a move. During an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Hudson revealed that she'd recently found out that Jimmy Fallon had a crush on her while they were filming Almost Famous together, which came out in September 2000. Of the crush, Hudson told Fallon, "I had no idea ... you gave me no indication." Fallon began stuttering in his reply to Hudson and said, "I don't know. I felt like [I gave] a little indication. I thought we were good together. We were good buddies. We hung out all the time."
However, Hudson wasn't having the talk show host's version of events, and laid down the cold hard truth. "Jimmy, if you would have actually made a move, I would've totally gone there," she told him. Fallon was clearly surprised by this admission and told the star, "No, you wouldn't've." But Hudson doubled down and told him, "I remember thinking to myself, like, 'Why has Jimmy never made a move?' And then I just kind of realized, 'Oh, he's not into me like that.' ... I was just like, 'Okay, well, whatever.' And so, then I met Chris [Robinson]." Fallon and Hudson will forever be our favorite celeb couple that could've been.
Just call her Kate Garry Hudson
It might come as a surprise to many Kate Hudson fans that the actress' middle name is — wait for it — Garry. The masculine moniker might sound like a strange choice for the actress, but the name actually carries an extremely personal meaning for Hudson and her family. In an interview with Australia's The Daily Telegraph, Hudson explained, "My mum's favourite uncle was her Uncle Garry." He died prior to Hudson's birth and her mom decided to bestow the name onto her daughter.
When asked how she felt about being given a "masculine name," the Nine star replied, "I love it ... I've had more laughs about that than anything else." She continued, "When people say, 'What's your middle name?' and I go, 'Garry,' they're like, 'What?!' But, you know, I think there's something about it." As for why she's such a fan of her middle name, Hudson told the publication, "I like how androgynous it is." She further revealed that the name is actually a good fit for her personality.
It would seem that Hudson was inspired by her own masculine middle name when it came to naming her new baby daughter, Rani Rose, who was born on October 2, 2018. On Instagram, Hudson revealed, "We have decided to name our daughter Rani (pronounced Ronnie) after her grandfather, Ron Fujikawa. Ron was the most special man who we all miss dearly. To name her after him is an honor."
Wait, Kate Hudson's eyes were on the side of her head?
Kate Hudson had some unusual nicknames growing up, and they weren't especially complimentary. In a 2008 interview with People, in which she was named one of "the 100 most beautiful" people in the world, Hudson revealed, "My brother Oliver called me Hammerhead because my eyes were on the side of my head." While Hudson is, uh, probably exaggerating, it's hard to believe that the Fabletics businesswoman hasn't always been stunningly beautiful.
In the same interview, Hudson assured everyone that her eyes were no longer on the side of her head, as she said, "They've kind of grown into where they're supposed to be now." As for other nicknames, Hudson revealed, "And Dumbo ... I've always had ears that stick out."
It seems as though Hudson wasn't all that fazed by the seemingly mean nicknames she was given. As she told People, "I was a tomboy. I had three brothers. I was the girl with the dress on who always came back in the house filthy with scrapes and bruises."
Kate Hudson has a boozy side business
Most of us know Kate Hudson as a world famous actress, but she has another passion. In 2015, Hudson opened up to Wine Enthusiast about starting Hudson Bellamy Wine with her then-fiancé Matt Bellamy of Muse. She revealed to the publication, "My parents were always, well, wine enthusiasts, and they took us on wine trips." She continued, saying, "Kurt Russell, my stepdad, started making wine a few years back up in the Santa Rita Hills, and he kept telling me and Matt that we had to get up and blend with them and do a harvest."
Earlier, Hudson confirmed her and Bellamy's passion to Elle, revealing, "We love to drink wine and we love to make wine. ... We don't see making wine as a business as much as it is a passion, so we talk about it all the time." Sadly, as of this writing, Hudson Bellamy Wine is no longer available.
However, in 2019, Hudson returned to the alcohol business when she launched spirit brand King St. Vodka. She told The Drinks Business, "I wondered, 'Are any of these vodkas founded by women?' I did some research and they weren't. So I decided to make my own just the way I like it." The actress also revealed, "The businesswoman in me is now looking forward to the challenge of building a brand in an entirely new industry."
Kate Hudson has avoided watching some of her movies
Despite being an Academy Award-nominated actress, Kate Hudson struggles to watch her own performances. During an interview with The Hudson Union Society in 2017, the Mother's Day star revealed, "When you're [acting], you're not thinking about [what you look like] ... When you're in it, it's a completely different experience than when you're watching it." Hudson also explained that the process of making Bride Wars was a bit different because she was also a producer on the movie and had more of a hand in how the film was made, which made her feel at least a little more comfortable watching it later.
When Hudson has no control over the filmmaking process, though, she feels less inclined to watch the finished product. As she told The Hudson Union Society, "On a film where you go and you show up and you put your all into something and then it goes to the director and the editing room ... you don't know what to expect, you don't know what take they're going to use ... The whole experience is just completely anxiety-ridden for me."
Hudson further revealed that she prefers "not to see the movies" she's starred in and admitted that there are some movies she's never watched — although she declined to share which.
