Kristin Cavallari And Jay Cutler's Divorce Is Getting Messier
Very Cavallari star Kristin Cavallari and her husband of seven years, former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler, announced their decision to divorce on April 26, 2020. During their 10 years in total together, the exes welcomed three children: Camden, Jaxon, and Saylor.
In identical Instagram posts, both Cavallari and Cutler said they had grown apart, and they asked for privacy during "this difficult time."
Shortly after the breakup announcement, court documents detailing their impending divorce surfaced on April 27, 2020. The documents seemingly suggest Cavallari and Cutler disagree on a variety of subjects, including financial support, custody of their kids, and their official date of separation.
The documents also prove both parties have already filed for divorce, meaning this split is full steam ahead. This might come as a disappointment to fans who watched their love story grow on Very Cavallari, which included a romantic trip to Italy during Season 3.
So what's really going on with this divorce? We dive deep into the court filings below.
Wait, when did Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler actually separate?
Before we explore the meat of the filings, let's first discuss Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler's different dates of separation. Cavallari claims their split occurred on April 7, 2020, the same day she returned from the Bahamas with Cutler and their kids, per court documents obtained by TMZ. However, Cutler says the breakup went down on April 21, 2020, which is when he filed for divorce.
As fans might recall, the parents took a trip to the Bahamas in March 2020 with the reality star's BFF, Justin Anderson, and his fiancé, Austin Rhodes. The group ended up being quarantined together for three weeks during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, as they were unable to organize a flight back home to Nashville.
It's unclear if something went down between the exes during the trip, although it's interesting to note Cavallari didn't post any pictures with the NFL star throughout this time period. The Laguna Beach alum last posted a pic with Cutler on March 12, 2020. Hmm.
Kristin Cavallari accuses Jay Cutler of "inappropriate marital conduct"
When Jay Cutler filed for divorce on April 21, 2020, he listed the reason as "irreconcilable differences," which made further cohabitation "improper and impossible," per court documents obtained by The Blast. He also asked the court to enforce the couple's prenup and requested joint physical and legal custody of their three children.
As for Kristin Cavallari's court docs, which were filed on April 24, 2020, she accused Cutler of "inappropriate marital conduct," which made "further cohabitation unsafe and improper." The Hills alum's docs state that "any misconduct alleged or implied against her in the complaint for divorce was in response to and/or as a result of misconduct on behalf of the Husband," which is interesting because, in Cutler's docs, he didn't accuse Cavallari of any misconduct.
Financially, Cavallari wants an undisclosed amount of child support and asked Cutler to cover their kids' health insurance. She has also requested he maintain a life insurance policy "where she is listed as sole beneficiary," per TMZ.
Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler are at odds over their kids
It appears Jay Cutler and Kristin Cavallari's differences also include how they'll co-parent their three kids post-divorce. Cutler has requested joint custody and states, in court documents obtained by TMZ, that he has always been "the available at home parent and primary caretaker of the parties' minor children."
However, Cavallari wants primary physical custody, claiming that she has been "the primary residential parent" and that she is "a fit and proper person to be named Primary Residential Parent."
Back in 2014, Cavallari gushed about Cutler's parenting skills in an interview with Michigan Avenue. "Jay is a great dad," she said (via Chicago Tribune). "It's so sweet seeing him with Camden and Jax, and there's nothing sexier than seeing your husband as a great dad."
Then in August 2018, the reality star explained to Page Six how Cutler would hold it down at home while she built her Uncommon James empire. "He luckily is unemployed at the moment," she revealed. "And he takes the kids to school, and he picks them up from school, which really frees up my day." She added, "He's at home with the kids himself right now and I never have to worry about it. So as corny and cheesy as it is, I honestly couldn't do it without him."
Of course, we wish both Kristin Cavallari and Jay Cutler the best as they navigate this new normal.
