The Real Reasons Why Lady Gaga And Taylor Kinney Broke Up
Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney were seriously so cute together. They gushed about each other constantly and clearly adored one another, so why in the world would these lovebirds call off their engagement? It turns out, there are a lot of factors at play in how their relationship went from a fun "LoveGame" to a "Bad Romance."
Her career is her top priority
Lady Gaga has made it no secret that relationships can sometimes hinder her artistic process. She told Vanity Fair, "I have this weird thing that if I sleep with someone they're going to take my creativity from me through my vagina." You see how that can complicate an otherwise good relationship, right?
Of course, Gaga may have been speaking hyperbolically, but the message is clear: her career comes first. She echoed the sentiment in Cosmopolitan (via Page Six), saying, "Some women choose to follow men, and some women choose to follow their dreams. If you're wondering which way to go, remember that your career will never wake up and tell you that it doesn't love you anymore."
Gaga apparently practices what she preaches because an insider told Radar Online, "Taylor has told her she's married to her career...Gaga never stops working—she writes songs in the shower and dreams up new outfits in her sleep."
Her career was suffering
Gaga's 2013 album, ARTPOP, was a critical and commercial disappointment when compared to its predecessor, Born This Way, and spawned only one semi-successful single with "Applause." It was the first album that Gaga had recorded since she and Kinney got together, and while no one really made that connection, it may give some weight to her prior statements about sex draining her creativity. She rebounded with the Grammy-winning jazz duet collection, Cheek to Cheek, with Tony Bennett in 2014, but her presence on mainstream charts has been sorely lacking since the ARTPOP flop.
She's not used to normalcy
"I'm lonely when I'm in relationships. It's my condition as an artist," Gaga told Vanity Fair. "I'm drawn to bad romances. And my song ['Bad Romance'] is about whether I go after those [sort of relationships] or if they find me." Until now, no one had ever heard about any sort of drama between Gaga and Kinney, so perhaps the possibility of a lifelong commitment in a normal, healthy relationship may have scared poor Gaga off.
They may have had trust issues
The couple's foundation was allegedly built on cheating, which is never a good omen. When Gaga and Kinney got together, he had a girlfriend of more than a year—a real estate agent named Brittany Sackett. Kinney met Gaga on the set of the video for "You and I," and, well, it got ugly: Sackett told the Daily Mail that she found out Kinney and Gaga were hooking up when the Chicago Fire actor butt-dialed her while he and Gaga were going at it! Beginning any relationship with infidelity is possibly the earliest death knell a couple can construct.
Some gossip sites suggest Gaga may have been the one stepping out—allegedly with her American Horror Story: Hotel co-star Finn Wittrock, but at the time of this writing, neither Gaga nor Kinney have commented on any stories of infidelity.
Her persona overwhelmed him
Radar Online reports that Gaga and Kinney split previously in November 2013, albeit briefly. "Taylor has told her...he can't deal with dating Gaga the megastar and all her obsessions and alter-egos," a source said. "He loves the cool down-to-earth girl but hardly gets to see her."
They disagreed on whether to have kids
Gaga and Kinney's timelines on if and when to have children may not match up. She told Parade in 2014, "I thought I did [want kids immediately], because I was feeling kind of finished with all of the chaos of my life. But then I started to spend a lot more time with Tony [Bennett], and everything just became simpler, more pure, and more perfect. Now I think I'm going to take a lot more time before I have kids and settle down. I just want to sing." Contrast that with Kinney's statement to The Huffington Post in October 2015, when he said, "I want a brood...I'd like a little soccer team and a minivan and all that stuff."
Their schedules didn't match up
A source told People that Gaga and Kinney's schedules are too crazy to maintain any real romance. "Their work kept them apart a lot," the insider said. A source for Us Weekly said the circumstances caused the couple to "drift apart," leaving Gaga "heartbroken."
An insider revealed to Page Six, "They realized they needed a break when she started working on her album. He started shooting the show [Chicago Fire] and they weren't spending as much time together. They stopped seeing each other so much and they drifted apart. They're both focusing on their careers but are in constant communication."
Gaga herself announced on Instagram, "Taylor and I always believed we are soulmates. Just like all couples we have ups and downs, and we have been taking a break. We are both ambitious artists, hoping to work through long distance and complicated schedules to continue the simple love we have always shared. Please root us on. We're just like everybody else and we really love each other."
