Here's How Much The Cast Of BH90210 Is Really Worth
Beverly Hills, 90210 was one of the genre-defining teen dramas of the '90s. Rich people with problems? It's a tale as old as time. Following the lives of friends at West Beverly Hills High School, the hit show made household names out of its cast: Jason Priestley, Jennie Garth, Tori Spelling, Gabrielle Carteris, Ian Ziering, Brian Austin Green, and Shannen Doherty.
Flash forward to the 2010s. Anything and everything is getting the reboot treatment, and Beverly Hills, 9010's came in the form of 2019's BH90210. The show was not renewed for a second season, but you never know what the future has in store if The Gang Goes Back to the Peach Pit. "We left the show kind of open-ended on purpose because should we all decide that we want to do more and the fans decide that they want to see more then we will explore options and there are other options out there," Garth told Hollywood Life.
So while we're waiting on that decision, let's pull out our calculators and find out how much the cast of BH90210 is really worth ... and see who might have the financial incentive to try it once again.
Jason Priestley got behind the camera and the wheel
Jason Priestley became a household name and a legit '90s heartthrob as Brandon Walsh on Beverly Hills 90210. Although he never replicated the success he enjoyed on the teen drama, Priestley has enjoyed a pretty diverse career that, as CelebrityNetWorth reports, nabbed him a cool $16 million. He left in the tenth season, when he began to think that Brandon's story had run its course — a decision he later regretted.
Priestley has consistently worked in television since Beverly Hills 90210, and made his bones as a director, sitting behind the camera for shows like The Outer Limits, The Secret Life of the American Teenager, Haven, Saving Hope, and of course, 15 episodes of Beverly Hills 90210. His career took a bit of a hit in 1998 when he was charged with drunk driving, and once again in 2002 when he was seriously injured during his brief career as a race car driver (via ABC News). Maybe stick to public transportation, Jason.
According to Forbes, Priestley sold his $2.14 million Los Angeles house at a $140,000 loss. While promoting his memoir, Priestley told Access Hollywood Live in 2014 about being a struggling actor while dating actress Holly Robinson Pete, who was more successful at the time. "I was broke," he explained. "I was keeping track of all the money I owed her because she liked to roll in a different class of travel and life than I could really afford." He eventually sent her a check in the amount of $7,500 after he booked his first show. "My parents raised me up right," he added.
Shannen Doherty is battling her way back
Shannen Doherty shot to fame playing Brenda Walsh, the Minnesota transplant on Beverly Hills, 90210. However, due to reported bad behavior, she was fired from the show after the fourth season. Doherty wasn't the best with money during her time on the show, and found herself with $36,000 in debt at age 22. Telling Entertainment Weekly in 1993 that she made more "than $12,000 a week" on the show, Doherty explained the downsides of making that much money. "I'm in the highest tax bracket, and I have, you know, attorneys to pay for," she said. "And, granted, I have gone on shopping binges. When you're young and all you know is how much money you make a week, you don't necessarily start thinking about, you know, everything that comes out of it."
Although her career rebounded for a while with a starring role in Charmed, money troubles followed her. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Doherty sued the business management firm of Tanner Mainstain for failing to pay her insurance premiums — an oversight that resulted in her receiving a breast cancer diagnosis late. In a 2019 interview with People, she revealed that she is now in remission after undergoing a mastectomy and chemotherapy.
She's now ready to get back to work. "I've always been like, 'I just need to work and make money.' I didn't ever choose with strategy, and now I'm a little more strategic." she told Health. According to CelebrityNetWorth, Doherty sits on $10 million.
Jennie Garth should host Flip or Flop
Jennie Garth played the role of popular girl Kelly Taylor in the '90s teen drama, but her life before the show was anything but glamorous. In her 2014 memoir Deep Thoughts From a Hollywood Blonde (via Money), she explained that the show provided her with financial security she had never experienced. "First of all, it really is good money — money on a level that I just didn't understand when I was a teenager," she said. "But I did understand that it took a ton of financial pressure off of my family, and this felt good." She added, "I was able to support myself and become financially independent at a young age."
But nothing lasts forever, right? Garth moved on from her most popular role to star in a string of television movies and shows, including What I Like About You with Amanda Bynes and 2014's Mystery Girls. And Garth didn't just make her money in front of the camera — she can flip a house like nobody's business. In 2013, the blonde beauty bought a home in Studio City for $2 million, documented the renovation on HGTV, and sold it in 2018 for a whopping $4.4775 million (via the Los Angeles Times). Take that, Chip and Joanna.
Despite a high-profile divorce from Twilight's Peter Facinelli in 2013 and a close call with current husband Dave Abrams (the pair reconciled after initially filing to separate), Garth has maintained a nice nest egg. According to CelebrityNetWorth, she's worth $8 million.
Brian Austin Green is a great son
Brian Austin Green, who played David Silver on Beverly Hills, 90210, went from displaying some pretty incredible dance moves on the show to marrying Megan Fox in 2010. You really have to appreciate that. Not only did his breakout role help his romantic prospects, but it also helped his parents as well. "When I started doing 90210, my dad was my manager, and my mother was my business manager. So they made really good money because I was making good money," Austin told AARP Magazine in 2019. "The house is paid off. They have money in the bank. They are really blessed that way."
According to CelebrityNetWorth, Green has amassed $10 million during his career (his wife is worth the same), which has included stints on television shows like CSI, Smallville, Desperate Housewives, and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. However, most of Green's public money issues revolve around his love life.
In 2012 (via TMZ), the actor sued his ex-wife, Vanessa Marcil, for allegedly not paying back the $200,000 he loaned her during their relationship. Green and Fox briefly flirted with divorce in 2015 and sold their two Los Angeles homes for $2.6 million and $1.25 million. The couple eventually reconciled.
Tori Spelling's wealthy upbringing nearly ruined her
Tori Spelling played rich girl Donna Martin on Beverly Hills, 90210, a status that certainly reflected her real life. It helps when your father is legendary television producer Aaron Spelling. However, being Aaron Spelling's daughter wasn't as profitable as one would imagine. She reportedly only received $800,000 of his $600 million fortune at the time of his death (via the Los Angeles Times).
Her money troubles, alongside her husband Dean McDermott, have continued ever since. There was their $259,000 tax lien in 2016, the lawsuit over the $400,000 loan they stopped paying back, and in 2016, American Express sued her for failing to pay her $37,981.97 balance. "It's no mystery why I have money problems. I grew up rich beyond anyone's wildest dreams," Spelling wrote in her 2013 memoir, Spelling It Like It Is (via E! News). "I never knew anything else. Even when I try to embrace a simpler lifestyle, I can't seem to let go of my expensive tastes. Even when my tastes aren't fancy, they're still costly. I moved houses to simplify my life, but lost almost a million dollars along the way."
With a reported net worth of $500,000, we can't blame Spelling for joining BH90210. Spend it wisely, Tori.
Sharks helped Ian Ziering get health insurance
Ian Ziering rose to fame portraying funny friend Steve Sanders on Beverly Hills, 90210, but the career dry spell he hit after the series ended was no laughing matter. Fortunately, with the Sharknado franchise, he found success again. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Ziering took home $500,000 for Sharknado 5, after accepting the lead role of Fin Shepard in the first film solely out of financial desperation (the series offered co-star Tara Reid similar financial security).
"I was really apprehensive, but as an actor I get my insurance from the Screen Actor's Guild by union, and you have to make so much every year to get that type 1 insurance," he told ABC News in 2013. "Halfway through the script, I said to my wife, 'Honey, I don't know about this.' She didn't miss a beat, she said, 'Look, you're going to have two babies [by] this spring, you need to go to work."
Do you want to hire Ziering as a celebrity speaker at your next event? It'll run you $20,000 to $50,000. You know you want to. All in all, Ziering has done pretty well for himself. According to CelebrityNetWorth, he's worth a nice $8 million.
Gabrielle Carteris is fighting for her peers
Gabrielle Carteris got her big break playing the brainy editor of the West Beverly Blaze, Andrea Zuckerman, on Beverly Hills, 90210. After leaving the series following the fifth season in 1995, she tried her hand as a daytime talk show host with Gabrielle, which lasted only one season. Her career then pivoted to made-for-television movies and guest appearances on shows such as Touched by an Angel, King of the Hill, NYPD Blue, JAG, Criminal Minds, and N.C.I.S.
However, in 2016, Carteris decided to make a career change. Instead of working to find herself jobs as an actor, she turned her attention to helping all actors. That year, she was elected president of the Los Angeles SAG-AFTRA, a union that represents more than 160,000 actors and other media professionals. Whether it was fighting for voice actors or pushing against age discrimination, Carteris had one important work for her peers and colleagues. In 2019, she was re-elected with 44% of the vote (via Variety).
Although she's no longer on the small screen like she once was, Carteris remembers her time on Beverly Hills, 90210 with fondness. "I ate with royalty; I flew on private jets; I was mobbed in every country we visited," she said at a Sarah Lawrence College conference. According to CelebrityNetWorth, Carteris is sitting on a nice stack of $3 million.
