Heidi Klum's Kids Are Growing Up Fast
Heidi Klum is a mom to four kids, in addition to having a hand in multiple television projects and being the reigning queen of Halloween. At the time of this writing, Klum's kids range in age from 10 to 15. While her three youngest share the same father, British musician Seal (real name Seal Henry Samuel), her oldest, Leni, is the daughter of Italian businessman Flavio Briatore. Although she strives to keep her children out of the spotlight as much as possible, it isn't uncommon to see the TV host out and about spending time with her kids. In fact, despite never appearing to miss a red carpet or photo op, Klum actually considers herself to be a bit of a helicopter parent and is very protective of her little ones.
With Leni graduating from middle school in 2018 and her other kids being either teens or pre-teens, the supermodel's children are growing up super fast. Find out what Heidi Klum's kids have been up to over the last few years.
Heidi Klum's oldest daughter was raised by Seal
Heidi Klum and ex-boyfriend Flavio Briatore welcomed their daughter, Leni (birth name Helene Klum), into the world on May 4, 2004. Unfortunately, the couple had called it quits shortly after Klum became pregnant in 2003. Briatore was pretty absent from his daughter's life up until 2018, when they reunited after years apart. However, Leni wasn't missing a father figure all those years. Her stepdad, Seal, stepped up to the plate and treated her as if she were his own daughter. In December 2009, he made things official by adopting Leni — changing her last name to his own, Samuel. "It doesn't make [Leni] any more or less my daughter," he told the UK's Mirror (via People). "She always has been."
Seal continued, "All it means is that both Heidi and I wanted her to have the same last name as the rest of us," adding, "It was about Leni. I don't want her to feel different because I know what that's like, being a kind of stepson. And I don't want that dynamic for my little girl."
While Seal clearly cares very much for Leni, Briatore seemed unfazed when the adoption went through. "Leni is my natural daughter, but the three of us happily agreed that it made more sense if Seal adopted her, because a child needs to grow up in a family," Briatore told Italian newspaper Il Corriere della Sera (via the Mirror) in 2015. "Heidi, Seal and I have built an amazing relationship." He noted, "It's hard to miss a baby that you never see. But I know that Leni is not an abandoned child."
Even though Seal and Klum divorced in October 2014, there seems to be no love lost for his adopted daughter as he and Klum continue to co-parent — even linking up for their daughter's 14th birthday.
Heidi Klum's kids aren't following in their mom's footsteps
With a supermodel mom, it would be easy for Heidi Klum's kids to pull a Kaia Gerber or Anwar Hadid and set their sights on the runway. However, it seems that the German beauty's children are interested in paving their own paths.
In July 2018, Klum told Hello! that her daughter's current passion is dance. "She wants to dance right now. I'm letting her do what she wants to do." And it seems that she is encouraging Leni along the way. Klum took to Facebook in 2019 to applaud her daughter's talent. Alongside a video of a dance competition, Klum wrote, "Love watching you dance so beautifully Leni."
As for her other kids, Klum told Hello! that she's not "putting any seeds" into their heads and will support them no matter what. "I want them to come up with their own things. They are not really stage kids. For example, my oldest son is 12; he's turning 13. I think he has his dad's voice. It has that husky, sexy kind of voice that Seal has. I'm always like Henry, you have such a beautiful voice, but he doesn't want to. He loves sports."
That's not to say that Klum wouldn't help her children enter the modeling world if they wanted to. "If they ask me one day, and they want to pursue it, I'm going to look into a modeling agency for them, but no one is asking." Maybe that's because they know that in fashion, one day you're in and the next you're out, and they're looking for something with a little more longevity.
Heidi Klum's kids all have an extra dad now
After falling in and out of love a few times after splitting from Seal, Heidi Klum tied the knot with Tokio Hotel musician Tom Kaulitz in February 2019. According to a People source, ahead of the wedding, Kaulitz "made a huge effort" to get to know Klum's kids — even including them in her breakfast-in-bed proposal. A friend of the supermodel told People that the kids were "so excited and happy for their mom." When asked how her children felt about her new husband, Klum told Us Weekly, "So far, so good." Kaulitz added, "I think it's working out pretty good." He also revealed that he is teaching them how to play guitar.
Even though the People source revealed that the musician sees himself as an "extra dad," he isn't interested in stepping on any toes. "It's been important to Tom to just be respectful of Seal," said the source. "Tom is very mature and acts beyond his age." It seems that, even though Heidi Klum's kids have quite a modern family, there's no lack of love surrounding them as they grow up.
