Ariana Grande, Social House Share Song Of The Summer Win At 2019 MTV VMAs
Ariana Grande found chart success with a song with "girlfriend" in the title, so why not try her luck with "boyfriend" as well?
Her gamble paid off. The ponytail aficionado won the Song of the Summer award for "Boyfriend," her collaboration with pop duo Social House, at the 2019 MTV VMAs.
Later in the evening, the 26-year-old pop star beat out Cardi B, Halsey, Billie Eilish, Shawn Mendes, and the Jonas Brothers to take home the coveted Artist of the Year award.
With 12 nominations spanning her two latest albums – Sweetener and Thank You, Next – many expected Grande to take center stage at the 2019 MTV VMAs. Unfortunately, she was unable to attend due to a matter near and dear to her heart. According to BBC, Grande was headlining Manchester Pride, which came two years after the Manchester Arena bombing that resulted in 23 deaths of concertgoers attending Grande's 2017 Dangerous Woman Tour.
"Manchester holds a very special place in my heart," Grande told the crowd at Manchester Pride. "I'm so happy to be with you, so thank you for having me. Sorry, I'm so nervous. I had so much more to say but I'm really very overwhelmed. So thank you."
Attendee Mason Thomas, who was also at the Manchester Arena that horrific night, spoke about Grande's emotional return: "I think she was crying at the start during 'No Tears Left to Cry,' which obviously is heartbreaking. But she's so strong. She was there for us. She was there for the LGBT community. She was there for Manchester." He added that there wasn't a single person in the crowd "who didn't have tears in their eyes" during Grande's set: "It means so much to the city and it means so much to the world to show what she did tonight and show that hate doesn't win."
Hate doesn't win, but Ariana Grande certainly does. Congratulations to her and to Social House for their MTV VMA win.
