Why Kim Kardashian's First Photo Of Baby Psalm Has Fans Worried
Kim Kardashian is the latest celeb to find herself subjected to a round of mom-shaming.
On Friday, May 17, 2019, the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star took to social media to introduce her fourth child with rapper husband Kanye West to the world, an adorable baby boy named Psalm West. As Nicki Swift previously reported, most of Kimye's followers spent the following days sharing their heartfelt congratulations or — because it's the internet — commenting on the kiddo's admittedly unconventional name. However, it wasn't long before a number of other fans grew concerned for the little guy.
The problem? In a photo shared by his famous mom, Baby Psalm could be seen fast asleep while swaddled up in blankets in his crib, which was noticeably surrounded by a bumper and pillows. While this set-up may seem harmless, the American Academy of Pediatrics notes that these are actually potential suffocation hazards that could lead to Sudden Infant Death syndrome (SIDS).
"Please follow safe sleep habits. It can reduce the risk of SIDS," one person tweeted in response to the baby pic. Alongside the hashtag, "LostMyDaughterToSIDS," she added, "Everything about this picture causes me anxiety."
Meanwhile, another concerned fan shared, "Please please please go pay an overpriced 'sleep consultant' to get all that unnecessary padding, bumpers, and blankets out of your child's crib so they are not at risk for SIDS. I've tried and failed to resuscitate too many children that have died this way. Signed, an ER doctor."
Readers may be aware that even a pediatrician named Dr. Lana Gagin publicly weighed in on the matter on the Today show this past Wednesday, May 22. "Younger babies up to 4 months of age are at the highest risk for sleep-related deaths," she said, adding, "The crib should be essentially bare. Parents need to avoid using any soft objects in the bed, and this includes crib bumpers, blankets, pillows, soft toys (and baby positioners)."
It should be noted that, at the time of this writing, Kim Kardashian has yet to publicly respond to the backlash. While the reality TV star has since deleted the above-mentioned photo from her Instagram account, it's still up on her Twitter page. However, as far as celeb mom-shaming goes, this was probably the kindest, gentlest, and most genuinely concerned round of parental criticism Twitter's ever seen.
According to a source cited by People magazine on Friday, May 24, "Kim is aware that she got negative comments about the photo of Psalm." The insider went on to claim, "It was a split-second, staged photo. As a mother of four, she very much knows how to keep her newborn safe in the crib. Again, it was staged for a photo."
As hinted at above, Kardashian, 38, and West, 41, are also parents to daughter North, 5, son Saint, 3, and daughter Chicago, 16 months. The married pair welcomed Baby Psalm into the world via surrogate on May 10, 2019. "He's here and he's perfect!" the E! network star tweeted at the time of her little one's arrival. Calling him "the most calm and chill of all of my babies so far," the proud mom added, "He's also Chicago's twin lol I'm sure he will change a lot but now he looks just like her."
While much has been made about Psalm West's name, one fan of the moniker is none other than momager Kris Jenner, who recently gushed to Entertainment Tonight about the Kardashian-Jenner clan's latest little addition. "The inspiration was the Book of Psalms in the Bible. I think it's just a wonderful way to celebrate how they feel," she explained. Calling her newest grandson "just adorable," Jenner added, "He's such a blessing, so it's perfect."
As for the Kardashian-Wests, a source recently told Us Weekly, "All the kids are so excited for the new baby. It's a very special time." The insider added, "Kim and Kanye are so happy. Four [kids] is the same as three in terms of how much they have on their plate. Their life is totally rooted in their family."
We certainly couldn't be happier for proud parents Kim Kardashian and Kanye West — who've apparently remained as media savvy as ever amid their expanding brood. Page Six reports that Kardashian has already filed an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to trademark the name Psalm West. Well, we suppose the Kardashian family's business empire didn't grow by accident.
