Disturbing Things About Johnny Depp And Amber Heard's Relationship
Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's divorce gets uglier and uglier by the minute. It turns out, their entire marriage was really messy.
Johnny Depp may have been abusive
Let's start with the really big, unsettling stuff: Heard accused Depp of domestic violence. TMZ reports that the actress appeared in court on May 27, 2016 with bruises on her face, claiming Depp assaulted her with an iPhone during a fight the previous weekend. The incident supposedly moved her to file for divorce. Heard's attorneys claim to have photographic and video evidence of more than one incident during the marriage. Heard applied for a restraining order, which was granted, but TMZ notes that some of her other requests, including spousal support, attorney's fees, the couple's Range Rover, and special protection for one of their dogs, were rejected.
Sources told People, "This was not an isolated event. This is only the latest incident. Amber did what she had to do to take care of herself."
Details about the alleged violence remain murky
TMZ reports that Heard's camp claims Depp offered her money to keep quiet about the incident. Sources close to Depp deny the allegations completely, telling the site that Heard's claims are "an affront to real victims of domestic violence." His folks say there are reasons not to believe Heard. She never filed a police report, and she posted Instagram photos after the alleged assault that didn't show any injuries. (Of course, anyone familiar with domestic violence may side-eye the first argument, and as for the second, Heard may have posted photos that weren't necessarily taken at that time.)
Lainey Gossip asserts that part of Heard's domestic violence claims may be in direct response to Depp's rejection of her spousal support request, which may explain why Heard didn't mention any domestic violence incidents in her initial divorce filing. Additionally, the claims were made public the day Depp's newest movie, Alice: Through The Looking Glass (2016) hit theaters. The timing of the release of the photos, as well as the timing of the split itself (mere days after Depp's mother, Betty Sue Palmer, died) is questionable at best and ice cold at worst, unless the domestic violence claims are true, in which case Heard likely filed for the protective order as soon as she was safely able to do so.
Depp left town on Wednesday for his movie's press tour. A representative for the actor issued a statement to People: "Given the brevity of this marriage and the most recent and tragic loss of his mother, Johnny will not respond to any of the salacious false stories, gossip, misinformation and lies about his personal life. Hopefully the dissolution of this short marriage will be resolved quickly."
Depp was uncomfortable with Heard's bisexuality
Sources close to Heard and Depp say that Heard's relationship with LGBT activist and photographer Io Tillett Wright made Depp jealous, and it was somewhat understandable. Page Six reports that Heard moved Wright into Depp's guesthouse against his wishes. That wasn't the only incident of potential infidelity. In January 2013, Page Six reported that Heard dumped Depp for French model Marie de Villepin and that she was still hooking up with ex Tasya van Ree while seeing Depp. Sources say that Heard began to distance herself from her female LGBT friends at Depp's behest, which may have led to her feeling isolated and frustrated within her marriage.
Depp may suffer substance abuse problems
Heard's legal documents cite Depp's alleged drug and alcohol abuse as a catalyst for his violent outbursts, reported TMZ. Heard claims Depp showed up to her birthday party in April 2016 "inebriated and high" and proceeded to throw champagne bottles and wine glasses, destroying a slew of household items within his range, and physically assaulting her. Heard claims that she didn't see Depp for a month after the incident—until Saturday, when he allegedly assaulted her with the iPhone.
Depp's family and exes don't believe Heard
TMZ says Depp's two teenage kids, his sisters, and his late mother all loathed Heard. His daughter, Lily-Rose Depp, has defended her father on Instagram. She posted an excerpt from a Los Angeles Police Department report stating that cops found "no evidence of any crime" at the scene of Heard's alleged assault (via USA Today).
Even Depp's ex-wives are vouching for the the actor. Actress Vanessa Paradis, the mother of his kids, wrote a letter of support obtained by TMZ. "In all the years I have known Johnny, he has never been physically abusive with me and this looks nothing like the man I lived with for 14 wonderful years," she said in the note. Depp's first wife, Lori Anne Allison, also said Depp was never violent during their relationship, according to TMZ.
Depp has a well-documented bad temper
The Daily Mail reports that in 1994, Depp trashed a hotel room during a brutal argument with then-girlfriend Kate Moss. The tabloid says Depp had been drinking and caused more than $10,000 worth of damage, blaming his mess on "an armadillo hiding in the closet." Seriously? Depp pal Terry Gilliam told Esquire that he never actually saw Depp lose his temper, but he "saw the results of it" in the form of a lot of damaged property. BBC News reports that Depp was arrested in 1999 after a fight with a paparazzo allegedly got physical.
Depp has a history of romancing much younger women
Heard, who turned 30 in 2016, is 22 years younger than Depp. She's closer in age to his teenage kids than she is to him. It's not the first time Depp — like other celebs in the past — has fallen for much younger women. He dated Winona Ryder when she was 16 and he was 27. He then moved on to Kate Moss who was 20 when he was 31. Depp is also nine years older than former partner (and mother to his two kids) Vanessa Paradis. In fact, sources told Radar Online that Ryder was so turned off by Depp's penchant for younger women that she vowed to never work with him again once he shacked up with Heard.
The marriage fell apart quickly
A source told Page Six, "Their relationship turned sour almost immediately. She's really young and affected by the industry and 'the scene' at times...Johnny doesn't tolerate that." The source said the pair, who married in February 2015, were pretty much dunzo by May 2015, but gave themselves a year to try to work things out—and avoid public embarrassment.
