Celebrities Who Married The Same Person Twice
"Until death do us part" — It's perhaps the most famous line from traditional marriage vows, and yet, for most Hollywood marriages anyway, that seems to be the exception to the rule. Most stars are lucky to make it to their 10 year anniversary, leaving Tinseltown to be known for its barrage of quickie marriages and even more dramatic divorces. But a few of Hollywood's most influential stars didn't let their divorce decrees stop them from finding love again — and they didn't have to look too far to find their next mate. They simply fell back in love with someone they had already married and divorced in the past!
For some of these stars, their marriage re-dos have panned out quite nicely, while others haven't been so lucky. They either ran into the same issues that split them up the first time around, or, sadly, they were separated by death. Pamela Anderson, Marie Osmond, and Eminem remarried their exes, and they aren't the only ones who decided to walk down the aisle with an ex-spouse. Here are the stories of love, divorce, and reconciliation from celebrities who've married the same person twice.
At least Barbara Walters was left with a lavish apartment
Barbara Walters and the late Merv Adelson appeared to be the perfect pairing when they tied the knot in 1981. She was a well-respected television personality, and he was a producer and the co-founder of Lorimar Television. What could possibly go wrong? We're not too sure, but CBS Los Angeles noted the couple called it quits just three years later, in 1984.
However, they couldn't keep their paws off of each other for long. By the time May 1986 rolled around, the duo was ready to give love another shot. According to Variety, they invited "about 30 guests" to their 1986 Bel-Air, Calif. wedding, but "more than 100 people" showed up to celebrate the smitten couple. One guest called it a "fabulous night," but it's just too bad it wouldn't last... again.
Walters is used to being the one who asks all the questions, but she did give a rare interview with the New York Times in 1992, just before she divorced Adelson a second time. While lounging in her Fifth Avenue apartment in New York City, she announced: "I moved here when I got married," before adding, "My husband wanted a larger apartment. So he's gone, but the apartment stayed." Zing!
After two failed marriages, 'it's not over' for Eminem & Kim Scott
Just ignore the fact that Marshall "Eminem" Mathers viciously rapped about killing his baby mama, Kim Scott, on multiple songs. Their dysfunctional romance compelled them to get married in June 1999 — four years after the birth of their daughter, Hailie Scott Mathers. Perhaps unsurprisingly, their marriage was short-lived. According to Billboard, the duo separated in August 2000 after Eminem allegedly used "a gun to pistol-whip a man he said he saw kissing his wife outside a nightclub." Ouch.
By December 2000, they patched things up, only for Scott to turn around and file for divorce in March 2001. But nothing could keep these crazy love birds away from one another. The childhood sweethearts got remarried in January 2006, according to People, in what the rapper's rep described as "a small, private ceremony at Meadow Brook Hall in Rochester, Mich."
But as Em's mentor would say, "Hold up, waiiiit!" Before the reunited lovers could send out thank you cards for their wedding gifts, and less than three months after saying "I do," Eminem filed for divorce, People reported. "There was a lot of sadness about why this didn't work out. They've been together for 17 years," Scott's attorney told People when the divorce was finalized eight months later. "They're life-long friends, lovers, have been husband and wife, they're raising children together... It's not the end and it's not over between them."
Oh goodness. Does this mean wedding number three is in the making?
Pamela Anderson & Rick Salomon still can't get it right
Pamela Anderson and professional poker player Rick Salomon have a ton in common. For example, they both starred in their own adult videos — with separate co-stars, of course. Also, they're both really into public displays of affection — and we do mean really into them. That's enough to sustain two marriages, right? Well...
On a whim, and in between her magic show performances in Las Vegas, Anderson and Salomon got married at the Mirage Hotel in 2007, People reported. It was the third marriage for both of them, and a source told the publication that the friends-turned-spouses were "head over heels in love." However, despite their affection for one another, two months after their wedding, the former Baywatch star sought out to annul the marriage, citing "fraud," according to People.
Clearly, things got pretty messy between them, so the media was blindsided when Anderson revealed to E! News that she and Salomon had gotten married again in January 2014. "We're very happy," she said. "Our families are very happy and that's all that matters."
But, a little over a year after figuratively becoming Mrs. Salomon again, Anderson filed a restraining order against him, claiming he attempted to strangle her during a moment of passion, according to TMZ. That, coupled with other irreconcilable issues, prompted the mismatched couple to officially stick a fork in their second marriage in April 2015.
Jean Claude Van Damme has a 'weakness' for women
At the height of his career, professional badass and martial arts guru Jean Claude Van Damme had a major problem. According to a 1992 People profile, the actor confessed that his "one weakness is women." And he wasn't lying. Though he was married at the time to former bodybuilder Gladys Portugues, rumors emerged that the Kickboxer star was engaging in an affair with aspiring actress, Darcy LaPier (who was also married at the time). Portugues told People the rumors were "irritating," while adding, "but I know what we have together. I'm too strong to let it get to me."
Whether or not Van Damme and La Pier had an affair, Van Damme's marriage to Portugues ended in a "messy" split that same year, according to E! News, and — Surprise! — The Bloodsport star would then go on to marry LaPier in 1994, according to Hello! Magazine. The couple had one child together, but they divorced in 1997, and guess who Van Damme ran right back to? Portugues, of course!
He and Portugues reconciled and got remarried in June 1999, according to Hello! It would be the actor's fifth marriage with his fourth bride. Thankfully, as of this writing, their love is still alive, well, and kicking butt... Van Damme style.
Melanie Griffith & Don Johnson's second marriage was a 'natural karmic thing'
Melanie Griffith was 14 years old when she met fellow actor, then-21-year-old Don Johnson. In 1976, just a few years after their initial meeting, the two got married, InStyle reported. But love couldn't keep this marriage from imploding, and the couple's rumored substance abuse problems "and wandering eyes" aided in their demise, according to People. "They just brought out the worst in each other," an insider told the publication.
Their love story was far from over, though. After getting divorced, Griffith would marry actor Steven Bauer and have a child before they decided to go their separate ways, InStyle revealed.
It didn't take long for Griffith to find love again. She relit the flame with Johnson, and the two were married for a second time in 1989 and even had a daughter together, Fifty Shades of Grey's Dakota Johnson. "It was sort of a natural karmic thing for us to get back together and to have Dakota. She was meant to come into the world, if you think about it," Griffith told InStyle.
And, who knows, perhaps she and Johnson would have remained husband and wife until the end of time... if it wasn't for his alleged alcohol issues. According to the Washington Post, the couple hit a bump in marriage numero dos around the time Johnson entered rehab. Although they attempted to keep it together even after that, they finalized their second divorce in 1996.
Natalie Wood & Robert Wagner's second marriage ended tragically
10-year-old actress Natalie Wood was walking down the hallway at 20th Century Fox studio when 18-year-old Robert Wagner caught her eye. "I turned to my mother and said, 'I'm going to marry him,'" Wood told People in a 1976 issue. And guess what? Wood was right. The West Side Story star and her handsome beau tied the knot in 1957. However, with the press hounding their every move, their marriage would end five years later, though they "never stopped loving" each other, Wood told People.
They both would move on, marry other people, and have children. Years later, in 1970, they were both attending the same Hollywood party. Woods was six months pregnant by her then-husband, Richard Gregson, and Wagner, married but separated from his wife, Marion Marshall, attended the party alone. Their fated meeting at that party spiraled into months of conversations between the two of them. "We talked about what had happened to our marriages. He had become a man instead of a boy. But we had to have those years apart," Woods said.
They ditched their marriages, decided to remarry each other in January 1972, and had a daughter together. However, their rekindled romance was cut short when Woods died during a boat trip in 1981 at the age of 43.
Marie Osmond & Stephen Craig kept their re-do relationship a secret
The first time Marie Osmond and former basketball player Stephen Craig got married was in 1982. They also had a son together, but their marriage would only last three years.
What happened next included many years apart, with Osmond even getting married to a man named Brian Blosil, having two children with him and adopting five more. Osmond and Blosil announced they were ending their marriage in March 2007, according to People. And, very secretly, Osmond began dating her first husband, Craig. "I didn't want anybody to get hurt, you know if it didn't work out," Osmond told Good Morning America.
The entertainer and her then ex-husband were seeing each other privately for two years, before they decided to get hitched in 2011 at a private wedding ceremony in a Las Vegas Mormon temple. "I am so happy and look forward to sharing my life with Stephen, who is an amazing man as well as a great father to my children," Osmond told People.
As of this writing, Osmond and Craig's second marriage is still going strong. Woohoo for second chances!
Larry King still has respect for his 'grand lady'
Television personality Larry King is known for his love life — which is more like a revolving door, if you ask us. He has walked down the aisle eight different times with seven different women, including his third wife, former Playboy bunny Alene Akins, who he married once in 1961 and again in 1967.
The couple had one child together, their daughter Chaia, and King even adopted Atkins' son, Andy, from a previous marriage, People reported. And long after their second divorce was finalized in 1972, King had nothing but good things to say about the woman he divorced, remarried, and divorced again.
When it was announced that Akins had died in February 2017, King took to his Twitter to pen a heartfelt and sweet note to his two-time ex-wife. "So very saddened over the passing of Alene Akins, who died peacefully with our children Chaia and Andy by her side. She was a grand lady," his sentimental tweet read.
Terrence Howard is ready for his 'I do' redux
He hasn't walked down the aisle just yet, but as of this writing, Empire actor Terrence Howard has made it clear that he's this close to getting married to the same person twice. The lucky woman is his third wife, Miranda Pak, who he secretly married for the first time in 2013, followed by an equally secret divorce in 2015, the New York Daily News reported.
More than three years after their divorce, in December 2018, Howard popped the question and re-proposed to Pak, with whom he shares two children. In a video posted to Instagram, Howard can be seen surprising Pak with a massive engagement ring. He also gave a toast to explain the reason why he intends on making her his wife... again. "It took me 45 years to find you. But now that I have you in my 50th year, I will spend the rest of eternity at your side," he says. Aww!
Hopefully second time's a charm!
