Bizarre Things Celebs Actually Collect From Fans
We're not exactly sure when people first used carrier pigeons, but we can only assume celebs have been receiving fan mail just as long. Some A-listers like Anna Kendrick have a strict straight-to-the-trash policy for anything that gets sent to their houses, including expensive diamond earrings (which we'd totally pawn for her if she wanted because some of us are still paying student loans). Other stars welcome gifts, but probably to a P.O. Box rather than the place where they actually live. Either way, most celebrities have quite a collection of stuff from their fervent fan bases whether they like it or not. And it gets pretty weird.
For some reason, an astronomically large amount of stars (i.e. any famous person at all) gets body parts sent to them through the mail — everything from breast implants to chunks of skin and human teeth — and sometimes they even keep the offering as a totem of their sheer influence on the world. Here are the strangest things celebrities have ever gotten from their fans. Be warned: You may want to wash your brain with soap after this.
A Jared Leto fan gave something, um, personal
Jared Leto has a close relationship with his fans, who are dubbed the Echelon — a very, very close relationship. Not only did he admit to Ellen DeGeneres that he's hooked up with a fan on tour, but he's also been known to collect their severed body parts. Okay, it only happened once (that we know about).
In an interview with Radio X's Phil Clifton, the 30 Seconds to Mars singer admitted that one of his fans went full-on Vincent van Gogh and sent him a severed ear in the mail. It was accompanied with a creepy note that flatly read, "Are you listening?"
"I never knew who it was, who's missing their ear out there. I poked a hole in it and wore it as a necklace," he told Clifton, though Radio X noted that the musician-actor was joking.
Here on planet Earth, getting sent a severed body part feels like a nightmarish threat lifted straight from Se7en; however, in Leto-land, it's apparently an intriguing (albeit bizarre) offering. It sort of figures for a dude who routinely sent his Suicide Squad co-stars insane gifts like dead animals and used condoms. We'd hate to see what Christmas is like at the Leto estate.
Kesha turned her fans' teeth into a bra
We can't be entirely sure, but it seems like Kesha is running the biggest tooth fairy scam on the planet. The singer has — on more than one occasion — called for her fans to send her human teeth. In a 2012 interview with BANG Showbiz (via Female First), the singer owned up to her bizarre tooth-hoarding habit. Apparently, it was all for the fashion.
"I asked for them to send me their teeth and I got, like, over 1000 human teeth," she said. "I made it into a bra top, and a headdress, and earrings, and necklaces." She added, "I've worn it out!"
There's no word on how much Kesha's collection would be worth if she pawned them to the Tooth Fairy, but judging by what was left under our pillows as kids, she only stands to make a few bucks. Either way, the singer asked for more teeth while she was in rehab in 2014, according to TMZ. Her efforts were swiftly thwarted by the facility because they "can't accept human remains" or any other potentially bio-hazardous material. Should Kesha continue her art project with fake teeth, you know where to send your old veneers.
Emma Watson has a stack of bibles
According to The Bookseller, the Harry Potter book franchise has surpassed 500 million worldwide sales across all of its titles. E! News reports that the films brought in more than $7 billion. It's not surprising that the popular movie series would garner a little bit of attention for its stars — and not always in the best way. While J.K. Rowling was resting on her laurels (she's apparently the only billionaire author in existence), one Gryffindor is resting on her stack of bibles.
Emma Watson, who rose to fame for portraying the bookish Hermione, admitted she'd amassed quite the bible collection after swarms of angry Christians sent them her way. If you don't recall, the Harry Potter series was once basically hailed as Satanic because of its portrayal of witchcraft. It caused such a fuss that it even landed a headline in The Onion.
"I have a collection of about 20 in my room," said a then-15-year-old Watson (via Female First). "People think I need to be guided."
Since 2014, the star has been fighting for gender equality as the UN Women Goodwill Ambassador. The same year she took her post, a Facebook poll reportedly found Harry Potter to be more influential than the bible.
Zac Efron's fan mail goes skin deep
The man behind Disney Channel's Troy Bolton might appreciate receiving mail from his fans — but things aren't that simple when you've got a rabid fanbase. If only the High School Musical star had a public Amazon wish list because then he might not have been sent literal skin.
If you're not sure what we're talking about, it's exactly what it sounds like. A fan literally sent Zac Efron a piece of skin. Skin. Was it a full-on chunk? Did it break past the epidermis and snag some connective tissue? Did it come with a gift receipt? Efron didn't share the details other than the fact that he thought it was hilarious (or maybe he was just playing nice for the cameras because he was on late night TV).
"Dude, imagine when I got it," he said during a Conan appearance with his That Awkward Moment co-star Miles Teller. "It's just hilarious because you don't know how to handle it. You'll never get around it."
As for what happened to the piece of skin, Efron appears to have a very "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" attitude, which means it could very well be hanging on the wall of his $3.995 million home (but probably not).
Norman Reedus has the breast collection
The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus has amassed an (admittedly small) collection of breast implants from his fans. According to Entertainment Weekly, the initial silicon implant Reedus received from a female fan was "one of his most prized possessions." He later added to his collection in 2015 when a fan sent him a second one to even things out (really, what's one boob without another?).
"I just want to collect breast implants," the celeb told Entertainment Weekly. "I'm going to take them out of all the women's bodies and just make a giant pile of them and lay my head on them. So, yeah — send more breast implants."
Though implants may be Reedus' favorite fan gift, he may also collect detailed dolls of himself. Apparently, his fans are quite the crafters. "I love those, they're really freaky," he told Digital Spy. "They make all the bike and the gear and my beady little eyes are even more exceptionally beady than normal."
Ed Sheeran has his cake, but doesn't eat it too
Ed Sheeran absolutely loves cake. His documented passion for baked goods dates all the way back to a video where the then-teenaged singer-songwriter shoved as many Jaffa Cakes into his mouth as humanly possible. Though a Jaffa Cake may not exactly be a cake depending on which Brit you ask, the superstar has been gifted plenty of actual cakes throughout his career. He used to welcome them with an open mouth and empty stomach, until one time when he almost bit off more than he could chew.
In an interview with The Jonathan Ross Show, Sheeran admitted that fans have always given him cakes, but, after discovering a creepy secret ingredient, icing never tasted as sweet.
"At the beginning of my career, I ate the cakes. You do. If you're given cakes, you eat cakes," he said. "Well, I cut into this cake to eat it, and as I pulled it out, there's just this big clump of hair ... I have a feeling that this girl kind of wanted me to eat the cake so next time she saw me she could be like, 'I'm inside you.'"
Needless to say, he should stick to the all-you-can-eat buffet hiding in his partner's purse (if that's who "Shape of You" is about, anyway).
Harry Styles has some extra padding
Way back in 2012, it seemed like all things were right in the world. One Direction had yet to break up (or go on a hiatus, if that's what they're still calling it). Taylor Swift was still wearing Harry Styles' paper airplane necklace and had no idea heartbreak was looming in the distance. The 1D boys were even still sharing an apartment complex, where they'd get a steady stream of love letters and gifts from fans. Then, someone sent them a menstrual pad and the illusion was shattered.
In an interview with The Daily Star, Styles admitted that it was one of the weirdest things ever slipped under their door (they apparently didn't have a mailbox). There's no word on whether or not the sanitary napkin was used, but it was emblazoned with Styles' name. Perhaps he kept it. Perhaps he gave it to one of the girls who were apparently coming through his front door in a "constant stream" (via Digital Spy). Either way, he moved into his own flat shortly after the incident, so you'll have to address your pads elsewhere (or, you know, nowhere).
Ariana Grande said 'thank u, next' to some strange gifts
Ariana Grande might have no tears left to cry, but she does have a collection of Yankee candles that she's not too thrilled about. According to TMZ, the singer was sent a string of bizarre gifts from a Massachusetts fan in 2014. The packages included a "rock from the White Mountains of New Hampshire," "dog and cat calendars," "8 Yankee candles," a "3-piece mirror set from Kmart," and a "$200 anklet from Kay Jewelers." The weirdest package of all? A massive pumpkin weighing 42.5 lbs.
Apparently, every kiss does not begin with Kay because the singer was freaked out enough to involve the police, who told the then-29-year-old fan he'd face "criminal harassment charges" if he didn't knock it off. Considering Kmart's string of closures, it might be a little more challenging to find his next creepy gift. Perhaps he could go to Walmart. Let's just hope any potential future presents don't involve body parts because, if we've learned anything by now, it's that somehow these things always involve body parts eventually. Thank you, but next.
This '60s toy is pure magic for Daniel Radcliffe
Daniel Radcliffe is used to a world of magic, but apparently he isn't too difficult to please when it comes to fan gifts. In fact, he doesn't even need any new-fangled technology. Everything seems sort of unextraordinary when you spend your childhood as a wizard who can literally do anything with a flick of the wand. As it turns out, one of Radcliffe's favorite fan gifts comes straight from the '60s.
In a 2011 interview with Access Hollywood (via Digital Spy), the Harry Potter actor admitted that his fame was kind of overwhelming — for him and his fans. One girl even "fainted immediately" when he bumped into her in a hallway. His high profile status has led him to be given a few strange gifts throughout the years, but the one he's kept closest to his heart was a simple, classic children's toy.
"I've been given an Etch-A-Sketch, which was kind of awesome," he said. "That was a present from a fan I'd never been given before."
To be fair, Etch-A-Sketches are pretty magical.
Robert Pattinson has thousands of toothpicks
Vampires exist outside the realm of typical mortal shortcomings. They don't age; they don't need to eat; their skin glitters without the use of expensive highlighter. Nonetheless, they may be invincible on the big screen, but they're no match for a tenacious cigarette addiction in real life. Robert Pattinson developed a curious collection when he started chewing on toothpicks to cope with his nicotine withdrawal.
In a 2012 interview with GQ (via Hollywood Life), the Twilight star admitted he doesn't exactly remember speaking out about quitting smoking, but someone noticed him chewing on toothpicks anyway. As a result, he was inundated with boxes of the stuff.
"Someone noticed in Cannes and literally the next day in Lisbon, then in Paris and in Berlin there were about 20 people on the red carpet giving me huge amounts of toothpicks," he said. "Thousands of them."
Pattinson has a close relationship with his fans, so it's not surprising that they'd give him gifts to help him through a tough time. He even admitted that he took one of his fans to dinner because he was bored and she was loitering outside of his apartment for the past three weeks. There's no word on if he took any toothpicks from the restaurant.
Lorde was looking for classic rock tees
At one point, Lorde's age was subject to a lot of suspicion and conspiracy theories. Word on the street was that the then-teenager was secretly in her 40s (yes, we're aware that it's totally ridiculous). If there's anything that proves the star is truly brimming with youth, it's certainly not her taste in music. At the onset of her Melodrama tour in February 2018, the Grammy-winner asked her fans to give her authentic classic rock T-shirts that she could wear on stage.
In a now-deleted tweet (via People), the singer said she needed to "rep my heroes on this tour." Her list of desired merch included acts like Paul Simon, Simon and Garfunkel, Phil Collins, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Now, we're not saying we can't get down to "The Sound of Silence," and the drum solo in Phil Collins' "In the Air Tonight" is absolutely iconic, but these acts aren't exactly hip with the kids these days. Perhaps Lorde was truly just born in the wrong era or perhaps she's actually middle aged (kidding!). But either way, she did offer something to fans in return. One authentic rock tee got you a hand-drawn t-shirt from the songstress herself.
Denzel Washington asked for undies
We see London; we see France; we do not see Denzel Washington's underpants because he totally forgot to pack them. In 2014, the legendary actor made a desperate plea to his fans to send him clean underwear after a small packing mishap.
According to Female First, the celeb was heading out on a European press trip to promote The Equalizer when he absentmindedly forgot to bring his undies. By the time he got to Paris, he realized his mistake. The then-59-year-old star had to buy his own, which turned out to be more cash than he wanted to spend. He reportedly owned up to his mistake on the Kiss FM Breakfast Show.
"Everything I've got on is free but I did pay for my underwear and they were too expensive. It's true. It was 32 Euros, man. I came on this trip and I forgot my underwear," he said (via Female First). "Please send in free underwear for Denzel Washington."
We just have one question: boxers or briefs?
