The Truth About Demi Lovato And Nick Jonas' Friendship
Singers Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas have been through a lot together. Having grown up in the public eye, these two former TV stars weathered drama that most people can't fathom — not even their most diehard fans (of which there are many.) Despite career changes, health troubles, and respective romances, Lovato and Jonas — not to mention Jonas' older brothers and former bandmates Kevin and Joe — have all remained relatively close throughout the years.
Still, that doesn't mean Lovato and Jonas' friendship has been smooth sailing since day one. Like any longtime pals, this celebrity pair has gone through its fair share of conflict, and rumor has it, these two celebs may have struggled to contend with a rift caused by one of Jonas' many lady loves.

They went to Disney High together
Both Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas got their big breaks in the entertainment business when they snagged coveted Disney Channel gigs. While Lovato first appeared on the Mickey Mouse network in a series of shorts called As the Bell Rings, she wouldn't make a name for herself as a teen icon until she appeared as Mitchie Torres in the hit Disney Channel movie Camp Rock — which just so happened to be Jonas' first major TV hit as well. From there, Lovato starred in other Disney projects, including Sonny with a Chance and Princess Protection Program. Jonas played a lead role in the scripted series Jonas, and along with Lovato and his brothers, he reprised his Camp Rock role in the movie's sequel, Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam.
Lovato and Jonas were in good company, too. Their fellow Disney Channel stars included Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, and twins Dylan and Cole Sprouse, but going through one's teenage years on camera can be hard — just imagine having your high school experience broadcast to the world!
Fortunately, Lovato and Jonas had each other in that trying time. "We've all watched each other evolve and grow up, and we've been able to be there for one another," she told People in 2016. Calling their friendship "genuine," Jonas added, "It's nice that in this crazy industry we have friends like this."
She dated his brother
With a close bond comes some ... confusing emotions, especially when you're a teenager. While Demi Lovato didn't get romantic with Nick Jonas, she did date his older brother, Joe Jonas, who played her love interest in Camp Rock. The young stars even had their first kiss while the cameras rolled for Camp Rock 2. In 2017, Lovato relived those moments, revealing that she "frickin' fell in love with him" while filming. "I wasn't acting much," she said.
Alas, things between Lovato and the now-lead singer of pop band DNCE wouldn't last long, and the two ended the relationship after just "a month or two." However, they continued to work together. According to Nick's interview in Lovato's Simply Complicated documentary, he was forced to act like a "bridge" between them when the exes' relationship grew "complicated."
That's a position he never should've been in, but Lovato and Nick managed to get past all that uncomfortableness — which, honestly, says a lot about their friendship.
They're super close
Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas are total BFFs. Not only have they grown up together, but the stars have even combined their musical talents by going on tour together in the summer of 2016. With all this constant contact throughout their careers, one would think they'd eventually start to get on each other's nerves. While it's possible that they do at times, they're clearly not interested in parting ways.
"There's an element of trust that you don't find with people nowadays," Lovato told Glamour. "He's family."
In fact, Lovato is often one of the first people Jonas gets in touch with when something major happens in his life — including breakups. "I internalize things, so we have this rule that we never want to hear about it in a tweet or something," Jonas told Billboard. "She'd read me the riot act, so she's the third person I call — my dad, Joe, then Demi."
Sounds like these two couldn't get any closer ... or could they?
Did Demi want to be more than friends?
At one point in time, Demi Lovato may have wanted to take things with her good ol' pal Nick Jonas to the next level. That's right, boys and girls: Lovato might have had a major crush on her longtime friend (not to mention, her ex-boyfriend's brother.) Rumors about Lovato's more-than-friendly feelings toward Jonas started when she released the track "Ruin the Friendship" on her 2017 album Tell Me You Love Me.
The song details Lovato's apparent desire to get romantic with a longtime friend, and according to Noisey, certain lines seem to indicate that Jonas is the subject of the song. For instance, Lovato sings, "Put down your cigar and pick me up" and "Play me your guitar, that song I love." Fans already know that Jonas appreciates a good cigar and, of course, he's been playing guitar for years.
Lovato admitted the song was about a fellow musician in her life, but she wouldn't name names — not even to America's sweetheart, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres. "Supposedly there's a song about Nick Jonas in here and because you claim to be so honest, I feel like you should be honest with that answer," DeGeneres told Lovato when the singer appeared on her show in October 2017.
An obviously nervous Lovato replied, "You know, something that I always keep to myself is who I write my songs about." Hmm ... sure sounds like a confirmation to us.
Nick thought he could save Demi
Sometimes friendship dynamics change — as evidenced by Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas' possible turn for the romantic, but that's not the only way that things evolved between these two celebs. Back in those Disney Channel days, Lovato started using drugs, and Jonas tried to keep her in check, believing he could help her deal with her problems.
"It became really good, you know, between she and I for a while and growing closer than we've ever been. I remember thinking in my head I felt a bit of pride about it, like selfishly maybe I was helping her back ... to being the Demi we know and love," Jonas shared in Lovato's Simply Complicated documentary. "She's not going to do anything crazy, she'll be fine, and then this episode happened."
The "episode" he was referring to was the now-infamous incident in which Lovato punched a backup dancer in the face while she and the Jonas Brothers were on the Camp Rock 2 tour. She reportedly threw that punch because the dancer had exposed Lovato's Adderall use. A short time later, Lovato entered rehab for the first time at the age of 18, where she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
Unfortunately, that wouldn't be the last time Lovato struggled with substance abuse.
What does Demi really think about Nick's fiancée?
Following relationships with the likes of Australian singer Delta Goodrem, actress Kate Hudson, and 2012 Miss Universe winner Olivia Culpo, Nick Jonas finally found "the one" when he started dating Quantico star Priyanka Chopra. Around the same time that Jonas and Chopra's romance made headlines in May 2018, Lovato unfollowed her BFF on Instagram (via Pop Crave). Coincidence? We think not.
Lovato is no stranger to speaking her mind when it comes to Jonas' love life. When Jonas told her that he and Culpo were through, she told him (via Billboard), "Honestly, I didn't like her anyway." Lovato also reportedly told her bestie to enjoy the single life, saying, "You could f*** anybody that you want right now, so have fun and do that."
Perhaps Lovato also criticized Chopra, but Jonas didn't want to hear it? That could explain the pair's possible spat, and as Lovato once told Billboard: "I give him a lot of advice. He doesn't always take it."
He'll always be there for her
Tragedy struck on July 24, 2018, when Demi Lovato was rushed to the hospital following what was initially thought to be a heroin overdose. Nick Jonas was one of the first celebrities to voice his concern for his friend after the story made headlines, proving that, despite any bad blood between the two, he'll always be there for her. "Like all of you I am reeling at the news about Demi," he tweeted. "All of us love her and need to pray for her to get well. She is a fighter."
Even Priyanka Chopra sent out well wishes for Lovato's recovery, taking to Twitter to write, "Strength and prayers." She also added the hashtag: "#PrayForDemi."
In time, let's hope Lovato and Jonas will be able to resolve whatever rumored issues they may have — the two need each other now more than ever. Considering Lovato's substance abuse issues and the media storm surrounding Jonas' engagement to Chopra (which, at the time of this writing, Lovato has not commented on publicly), both celebs could definitely use a friend. Let's face it, no matter what problems these two may face in their friendship, Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas' lives are intertwined forever.
