Miley Cyrus can buy her own "Flowers," and doesn't need anyone to do it for her, not even her ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth. Cyrus and Hemsworth's relationship seemed like the ultimate love story from the start ... who else meets their significant other on the set of a romantic film? But, after they met on the set of "The Last Song," it was anything but smooth sailing for the couple.

Cyrus and Hemsworth's relationship was like a never-ending love story or horror story to some. They would get together then break up, then get back together then break up again. Fans thought the couple was done with the back and forth after they tied the knot in an intimate ceremony in 2018, per E! News. But, even marriages aren't permanent, and like their countless breakups before, the couple eventually divorced. According to Page Six, Cyrus' team first released a statement confirming their separation. It read, "Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time. Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what's best while they both focus on themselves and careers."

The countless breakups before tying the knot were some red flags for the couple's eventual demise. So, how many times did Cyrus and Hemsworth split before they got married? 

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth got off to a rocky start right from the beginning. As we know, the pair met while filming the "Last Song" in 2009. Within a year, the couple had already broken up. In August 2010, reps for Cyrus and Hemsworth revealed that the two had called off their relationship, per Insider. But, this breakup didn't last too long because, by the next month, the couple was already running back to one another, per People. The two were spotted on a night out, and a source revealed how happy Cyrus was to have Hemsworth at her side. "With Liam back in her life ...  she acted totally different and, instead, seemed very happy," they said. "It looked like Miley and Liam had never been apart, and they were back into their old routine."

However, their "old routine" also included another breakup. In November 2010, the couple called it quits again. A source shared, "Their on- and off-again relationship is currently off." The source also stated that there wasn't any "drama" in the breakup and the two just drifted apart. "But you never know with Miley and Liam. They could be back on at some point," the insider added. And they were right!

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth had split three times before getting married, but the third split had to be the most difficult one for the pair because it happened while they were engaged. In May 2012, Hemsworth popped the question to the "Flowers" singer, and without hesitation, she said yes, per People. Cyrus shared, "I'm so happy to be engaged and look forward to a life of happiness with Liam." However, that happiness started to fall apart shortly after.

A little over a year after Cyrus and Hemsworth got engaged, they called it off — again. According to Us Weekly, the couple ended their engagement in September 2013 and didn't leave on good terms.  "Liam and Miley are completely done and broken up. She wants nothing to do with him, and vice versa. It's bad," a source revealed. "The Hunger Games" actor even revealed to Men's Journal how he may have taken on a little more than what he had expected in his relationship with Cyrus.  "You fall in love with who you fall in love with; you can never choose. I guess some people just come with a little more baggage," the actor said. But, Hemsworth was ready to get that baggage and go, because as fans know, the couple got back together not long after calling off their engagement. Unfortunately, their relationship didn't get the happy ending that their characters got in "The Last Song."
